I bought myself a laaaarge metal cookie box sometime in the past. It has two advantages 1.It is naturally magnetic and fits about 1K of my sisters. 2. It had cookies in it....I mean come on.

Have done similar myself. Works great! One thing that I realized might be better is putting the magnetic sheet on the LID. Then when you need to grab models, you pull the body off and have easy access to your minis instead of having to reach into the box and risk damaging anything if it's very full.

If you're in the states and looking for something that'll work instead of the hard to find rubber steel, or magnetic receptive sheets, I've found that the most hardware stores will sell "galvanized steel flashing shingles" in 8in x 12in size. These are roofing shingles, but are basically thin steel plates, and hold magnets quite well. This leaves roughly a 1/2 inch gap around the shingle to the walls of the box, but that's fine as it gives a little padding room for shifting. Glue these to the inside of a really useful box and you're set. Plus side is that it holds magnetized miniature bases a lot stronger than rubbersteel does.

@@MrGenerichead I just used a lot of cyanoacrylate (super) glue. Using that much outputs a lot of toxic fumes as it dries so if you go this route make sure to leave it somewhere ventilated or outside to dry. Same for other glues like two part epoxy.

I buy $20 cantilever tool boxes from the hardware store (Bunnings!) for mine. A three-level cantilever box gives four individual trays for storing small units of infantry, and one large section in the bottom for vehicles. They work really nicely and being steel, they suit magnetized units.

Referring to the start of the vid: Let me tell you… as a consultant, this is called a “best practice”! 🤣 Excellent video. Nearly exactly what I’ve moved to as well. Too much paint has been rubbed of by foam for my liking! The best thing would be a combination of the two. Magnetic sheet with modular foam dividers. You wouldn’t have friction and avoid all and any bumping. Also, please don’t buy the materials at GSW. They are massively overpriced. Buy them at magnet specialist shops.

Not sure if anyone would find it useful, but the KR Kaiser 2 bag fits these boxes in really nicely. You can fit either 3 4litre boxes in or 1 4litre and 1 9litre, with the bag having all the pockets and such to carry the rulebooks, codexes, dice etc. Also has a good handle and strap so its less obvious that you're turning up to an event with a load of fancy tupperware :D

I actually use this method with one key modification, I use a hot glue gun instead of superglue. I just put a wad of glue on top of the magnet and press the mini down onto it. The benefit of this is that the magnet has much more adhesion to the foil when the two have direct contact which is really important for getting the most out of it.

TLDR; use metal roofing sheets and tiny 1mm magnets instead. This technique has been a gamechanger for me. I can see all my models and easily store them because the boxes are stackable. I started with doing them the way you show in the video but had some issues so changed how I do it. The problem is that really strong magnets stick to everything and each other. I have broken models just trying to remove them from each other. So, don't use magnets that are overkill. I found that 8"x12" roofing sheets are great because I can lift out all of the models together at once. The metal sheet acts like a miniature tray. I use a piece of paper between the models and the metal because I construct/basecoat/base/paint them directly on the metal sheet. In fact, the first thing I do now is add the magnets to the bases. It is soo much easier to glue together models when the bases are stuck to the metal sheet. I started using the paper under the models to write notes on about the model.

I like Magnet Baron magnets, which sit flush with the bottom of GW bases so that the magnets make contact directly with the magnetic surface. Coins tend to be better than steel washers as they have only a ferrite core, so the connection is not quite as strong. Alternatively, a few coats of paint on the washer and/or metal base will weaken the magnetism.

I did this and I had a problem with my minis sliding all over the place, because the magnetic sheets weren't magnetic enough to keep them in one spot. I ended up picking up some of the cobalt keep display cases (which have a metallic base), now they're absolutely not moving. can hold it upside down, no issues. eventually I will revisit it by using tin snips to cut an actual chunk of sheet metal and glue them to the bottom of one of the "very useful boxes" to hopefully prevent the sliding issue while traveling. for the moment, i'm happy with the cobalt keep cases, but they're a PITA to open, and relatively small. good for display / moving around, but not sure I'd want to take them to travel to an actual game.

I was wondering, is the "direction/polarization" of the magnets as you put them below the bases important? Is it like magnetizing weapon loadout where a single, wrongly placed magnet is destroying your happiness? Or is the sheet not a magnet sheet but a ferro-magnetic sheet? (I mean, is it just metal so the magnets latch onto it). Reading the description of the sheet I think it is a magnet by itself, but you were so easy-peasy gluing your magnets on the bases, even after dropping one, so I'm still wondering :D As a KT player who does not transport a lot of minis or a lot of times, still not quite sure if I should go Feldherr (essentially for storage) or magnetized boxes. Your video just pushed me more towards the boxes. Watched the latest Ninjon video yesterday, he also mentioned the "really useful boxes". @MediocreHobbies
@MediocreHobbies 2 жыл бұрын
There is indeed. I guess for me one of the strongest contenders for this case is most of my models are stored in cabinets. Or on shelves. So having loads of pluck foam around for all the models just would work for me. A few of these cases filled with the modes I need when I need that is perfect.

what I do myself is using an ikea KVISSLE (it's a letter shelf) and then put it inside a Tabletop Titans carry case. The case wraps pretty snugly around the letter shelf and each shelf is magnetic so you can have a few racks of models! just struggling as one of my models is on an MDF base so unsure how best to magnetise it at the moment

I actually highly advise against using magnetic vinyl for this. While it's easiest to cut to the shape of the box, the magnetic strength can often be very weak, leading to sudden jostling to cause the models to fall over. Instead, go to your local hardware store and look for a sheet of galvanized steel and get yourself a pair of tinning shears. Measure the inside dimensions of the box and cut out the sheet (while wearing safety glasses in case of tiny metal fragments), finally either gluing it to the bottom of the sheet, or utilizing those adhesive wall hangers people use to hang art. The magnetic strength is MUCH more pronounced, so much so that you can literally flip the box upside-down and the models will not fall. It's a bit more work, but it's worth it in the long run.

Its more to do with surface area. I use magnetic paper in the tray but all my models have steel paper underneath. I'm currently basing front rank 1690 period cavalry 2 models (metals) to a 50x50mm mdf base and stick a 30x30mm piece of steel paper underneath. No issues here been doing it for years. Magnetic displays sell the paper, you can buy their off cuts...12x 120x60mm (off top of my head) pieces for around £3.

Magnetic cases are better with metal sheeting and not foil. That said magnets are only good until you and your army fly. Magnetic cases are absolute crap if you have to board a plane. I've flown an army for conventions and foam absolutely is the ONLY solution in those situations. So if you don't need to fly then magnetize otherwise stick to foam, you'll not regret it.
