After going on a date night on the electric scooters, Shel gets into determining what in the world he is going to do with the severely oxidized gel-coat on the flybridge brow. Will he be sanding? Will he be painting? Maybe just a buff will do? He gets some new products in Mail Time to try to see what will be most effective.

We are a travel couple, looking for a non-mainstream life of living aboard a boat and cruising in the Caribbean/Bahamas in Winter, and the Great Lakes in Summer. Working when we can to fill the cruising kitty. We have sold everything we own, and we now own a cruising yacht. We have chosen to do this voyaging in a powerboat/motor vessel, instead of the popular sailing route.
Our mission is to help inspire people to live their dreams earlier in life, instead of waiting until retirement. So often retirement dreams are dashed by health issues or other unforeseen later life circumstances. If you have a dream, then dream, plan, and do it now. We hope to make you smile, and spark the yearning in your heart for fulfilling your dreams.

Enjoyed this video immensely. Good to see other people and how they approach the never ending buffing saga. I have a 1990 CPMY Tolly. When I bought it I had to wet sand the bonnet to get rid of the blotches as well. I haven't had any blotches since. Good job, your finish looks amazing 👏 👌. Hi Schel, try using 2000 grit and then move to 4000 grit then 5000 grit. After that use "Marine 21" with a foam pad on your wheel. After that use Finessit polishing compound and then a Collinite 845 insulator wax.. I guarantee it'll come out like new and last for a long time. I've used this process for years, it works.
@SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips. Sounds like that process would work. Though I haven't used wax for a long time now. I use a polymer wax that last longer, doesn't yellow, and doesn't attract dirt. I've tried Collinite, while it did give a nice finish initially, it just didn't compare to the longevity of Aurora Boat Shine that I use all the time.

I have found that using ‘aqua buff’ 1000 or 2000 with a buffer that runs at 2200 rpm ( critical) and this removes oxidation and it waxed at the same time. The pro guys in Florida use it always and I have even bought it in Mississauga Ontario. You don’t need to paint it.

This sanding and polishing seems like a lot of work and further diminishes the thickness of the get coat. Turned out beautiful though. I am purchasing a boat pending survey near you and it could use the same polishing times 10. I have had great success on my 1981 Boston Whaler with 3M 36060 polishing compound with a foam pad with no sanding. I finish it off with a hybrid ceramic spray coating from turtle wax. This is the same process that I use on my vehicles and the shine and water beading lasts for up to 6 months. I'm not sure how long they will last on gel coat at the marina, but we will be finding out soon. I will be out to Florida this week for the survey and hope it all goes smoothly. If it does, we will enter into a new lifestyle inspired mostly by the two of you. Thank you so much for showing us the way.
@SearchingforCShels

Ever try any of the ceramic coatings? I had my daughters new GMC done when I first got it for her. It held up for the first five years without having to touch it again, even though they suggest going over it every year. I guess it would be different for a boat, but it works great for cars/trucks.

Of course, when I pronounce the German ä (ae) ö (oe) and ü (ue), well, let's just say that it sounds just as fun to a German. :-) Because language is a big interest of mine, I have a question (and I ask only from a lack of knowledge perspective, or ignorance if you will); All communities have certain ways to pronounce their towns, counties, etc. Is the way you pronounce Newfoundland a local thing, or is it Canadian? I'll be happy for you when you get back down to the Bahamas.
