In which I show you the process I went through to make DIY enamel-looking pin badges with cheap materials. Usually enamel pin badges require expensive machines and a large minimum order quantity, but if you can make them at home, you can make small batches that look pretty good!
Chapters:
0:00 Introduction
0:16 Artwork
1:22 3D Model
3:27 3D Print
5:32 Paint
6:32 Casting
The dragon artwork was originally a piece by Notidee on twitter! They make pretty cool art, check them out: / notideeart
For thinning the 2 part epoxy, in a 40ml batch, I found that 3ml of 100% isopropyl alcohol worked the best for diluting it. Usually I just mix the resin, then add the thinning agent until it's slightly more viscous than water. As mentioned in the video, do not do this if you intend on using the epoxy for structural applications.
The dyes are simple alcohol dyes made specifically for 2 part epoxies. I recommend finding opaque pigments instead, as the results I got from the transparent dyes ended up looking like candy.
If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to let me know in the comments section, because I read pretty much every comment.
Don't forget to leave a rating on the video, as it helps me out a lot.

I made a few pins following a very similar process, except I took my initial print, created a silicone mold, and then reproduced the pin using a plastic like resin. I then painted the pins with enamel paint, but the syringes I was using were way too big (the model paint squeeze type). These syringes would have been much better! Without any pressure pots or vacuums the mold came out pretty ok and the initial POC pins were serviceable. I think there's a ton of room here with either approach for makers to run off a good number of small run pins

I wanted to wait until the 4k version processed, but I can't wait any longer. If you want 4k, come back in like a week, lol.

Thanks for this! I love the look of enamel pins but buying some or even getting some custom made are super pricey. Been looking for ways to try making some at home!

They're pretty neat. My current setup is actually in a spare closet-sized basement in a rented town house XD The vent fan makes for a half-decent fume extractor, but resin printers and their accessories do indeed take up a lot of space. I should give a tour of my small setup, though!

HI! I'm trying to make pin using an svg, but every time I try uploading line art to create the ridges similar to what you have here which makes the cavity for the resin, I can't get the solid backing with the raised line art. It just extrudes the line art leaving a hollow space where I'd like to have a solid back like in this video. Is there a way to fill in the empty spaces that I'm not seeing?

Awesome idea, i have a resin printer and looks like this would be a good product to sell, what resing do you use and what about the paint, it doesn't scratch when placing the metal ring?

Wow so I've been working on a similar process and I thought yours were going to be way different because they look cleaner, but actually we did almost everything the same ha! Main difference being the syringes which I'm definitely stealing. I want to ask about the epoxy though, because it seems like fussing with the curing times is unnecessary; why not just use UV resin and cure it once the colors are filled? Also I LOVE the DDR arrows! I kinda want to make those now too.

The pins look epic! I do have a tip that might make life easier - just use the UV resin from your printer instead of a 2 part. Fill the voids and then just stick it in your cure bin and you don't have to worry about a working time. Also, maybe look into small squeeze bottle with fine tips, those might be easier than a 24g needle. I've been doing a pretty similar process with stuff out of my Snapmaker. Last thing xD some people need syringes for things like insulin for diabetes (or their pet has diabetes and takes insulin) and the local pharmacy doesn't have the size they want so off to Amazon we go lol
@LazerLord10
@LazerLord10 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the help! Although I'm not sure how well UV resin will dye, it can't hurt to give it a try. Do they have squeeze bottles this tiny? The syringes were needed because of the really fine control required for palcing the resin. Also, another use for amazon needles is pet medicine! I forgot about that, too lmao
@RTRPikachu

@@LazerLord10 I think mine are 1 ounce? UV resin dyes really well, I used to have and Elegoo Mars and would put alcohol ink the reservoir resin.

Because of the softness and potential for scratches could you put a thin coat of clear undiluted right over the top?

Several reasons, really. Main one being a re-prioritization in life at the moment towards my career in the space industry. Also a slight lack of motivation to maintain the endurance required to actually finish a video. I do plan on doing some more stuff in the future, but nothign concrete as of now.
