The only criticism i would give is the use of deckmate screws for the structure underneath. Deckmate screws are great for deck planks. But deckmate screws dont not have a lot of shear strength. They weaken easily and will shear off. Use different screws.

How come you don't gap you but joints? You did on the 45 miter but not at the but joints you put them tight. Hows that work for expansion? This thing looks great buy the way. A lot of people stay away from boarders on decks because of the extra framing work that is required and it's so expensive. If you dont have a video on framing for a deck with boarders you should do one your work is spot on. Nice job

Do you keep the space in the miter the same as the space between the boards? I'm doing a double picture frame and not sure how best to deal with the miters. I don't think having them completely tight will work as they'll open up in the future. What is your approach? Also, have you ever mitered scalloped boards (ie not solid all the way through - they have those dado type groves along the bottom. My thought is to maybe rip some wood to fit into those channels and then crew in through that for a more solid hold.
@FixitAll

Was the same space, 1/4" approximately. Never work with other types of flooring, can't say anything's. Sometimes I do corners without space to better look like solid continued wood edge/frame. Like in this deck: How I build the Deck 12' x 20'. kzfaq.info/sun/PL9fyWqL02lqkUWshlwsCqzBcRR8BEMETo

Timbertech Azek guide explicitly states, “Do not leave a gap at butt joints, splices or miters.” I don’t know why though since a lot folks apparently do and if John Dough is correct, Trex specifies the opposite.

After years, the frame and floors board will move back and forth in winter-summer temperatures and no one guarantee 45 will stay together. So owner asking make a 1/4" gap like all floors between boards. In this way it will look similar all the time.

@@FixitAll thank you for your quick reply. Sorry if it came across as i was questioning your work, it was certainly not my intention. I am just trying to understand why manufacturers are telling us to leave a gap for expansion, but at the same time approve face screws which is counter intuitive. I thought the screws would lock the board in place and resist any movement thus putting stress on the boards. And the Camo system is similar to face screws interfering with expansion. Am I understanding it right?
@FixitAll
@FixitAll 7 ай бұрын
@@b3arwithm3 I think the boards don't create as much movement and don't expand as much as to put stress on the screws. Natural wood boards are much more susceptible to expansion. However, they are screwed on and last for decades.

@@FixitAll does the temperature varies a lot in your area? Yes wood boards move much more. I think they buckle up because they can't move horizontally. That's the #1 problem I see with wood decks. Nails aren't flush because the boards cupped up.

Hope you didn't build that deck framing with all screws, not up to any code AND much weaker than using nails. Good for a few years but screws don't have the structural or shear strength of nails. Also should have used rubber joist tape to protect the joists from sitting water. Won't rot nearly as fast. Even with treated lumber.....
