Produce smoke is normal on any iron when using for first time, you need use proper isulating material to this work, I have my own 5V 20W made of cupper cable, a wooden cable, a insulation of Kapton tape, this tape can deteriorate after a long time, but when it happen, the resistor area is oxidized and don't conduct anymore, don't happening a short circuit, and I've use a pen spring as a heating element. I made another 12V using mica as insulator and part of a 1000W 120V resistor as heating element, when well done works, and I even have an original Hikari power 50+ iron. I've put an epoxi mass to hold the cupper wire on the wooden cable, the cable is weak to hold the heat without enlarge due heat. I have a PSU and a transformer.
