You have to understand that these 18650 batteries are different from the lead acid and the charging/discharging process is totally different from a normal lead-acid 12v battery .
If you need a 9v battery and want to learn how .to make it from 18650 cell watch the video it has details on how to make a new battery at home.You can make this battery from 18650 cell that can be harvested from laptop batteries or power banks, a thing that has Li-ion in it can be reused and reconfigured in a homemade battery.
The important steps when making a 9v battery:
Charging the cells
Discharging and see the mAh of each battery
Match them to closed capacity
Make your battery pack by series or parallel connection.

It will be great if you combine 3 18650 cells in series and then use a LM7809 voltage regulator to get exact 9 volts. That will be much efficient than this one. Anyways it was a great video.

This 8 volt battery can not be used instead of 9 volt battery. If you supply an appliance of nominal voltage 9 volts with this 8 volts battery, it will give a signal of low battery. Besides, a fresh new 9 volts battery if measured it will give approximately 10 volts reading.

But you have no over discharge protection. If your load drains the batteries too low they will be damaged.

After following your tutorial on this I found some drawbacks. This DIY 9v battery can deliver much more current than a regular 9v battery can that's correct but actually 9v batteries aren't designed for high drain applications. It is designed to handle low drain devices like smoke detectors and multimeters. Also a new 9v battery usually has almost 10v which this 9v(more like 8.4v as a li-ion battery is charged to 4.2v to avoid overcharge) battery can never reach. Nonetheless, great video it helped me save money to buy real 9v batteries for my electronic projects

Rainbow Sword there can be made or both a current limiter, and connected to a buck converter you can have a 5v regulated power supply more efficient then a cheap power bank I will make a video about it soon

@@NoSkillsRequired Actually a real actually a real 9v rechargable battery can be made with 3 li ion batteries in series to create a 12v battery pack which your other video did and connect it to a lm7809 voltage regulator then you'll get very accurate 9v straight up and there is also an internal current limiting circuit which tops the current at 1.5A so short circuit will be prevented and much safer. Also a lm7809 is super duper cheap and you can always connect two or more of them in parallel to increase the total current output for you application

ATG & I say you are wrong because an ATG's 18650 battery is 3.7V (at most 4.1V). No way ever to equal to 9V. 3.7 + 3.7 (connected in series) = 7.4VDC You do know that an 18650 is li-ion battery, right?

I like this alot but isn't 8.4v max, 3.6v x2 = 7.2v opt and 2.8vx2=5.6v way too low? My 9v smoke detectors beep at me all the time :(

Have you measured a 9v battery first? And li ion cells when fully charged are 4.1-4.2v so best chase scenario is 8.4v pretty close to 9v

I am not so sure about your polarity. When I look at a factory 9Volt battery the poles are reversed. The Positive side is the small terminal and negative is the larger one. I believe you have it backwards.

Matt exactly I reverse it because you will connect the special plug to it which has the normal polarity, but it was just my preferance you can make it how you whant

My rechargeable torch has 3.7 v single rechargeable battery of 1200 mah. Currently battery backup is very poor. Can i replace it with three 1.2 volt rechargeable cells . So that their combined mah will be 4000 mah . My doubt is will I be able to recharge like before inside the torch . Will it explode since each cell in series might get more charging volts

You can try but with charging will be a problem use to charge a 1.2v recharge station individuality and then plug them in the tourch or just change the 3.7v li ion with a more powerfull one from the electronic cigarettes

This is pretty useless you cannot charge them this way.. you need a BMS when you put 18650's in series.

The funny thing about this is that if used to replace a 9v in its typical useage scenario(ie smoke detector) the drain on the cells would be slightly less than the natural discharge rate of the cells.

Dogapult this is written on any li-ion 3v discharged, 3.7v nominal and 4.2v fully charged this is next best thing to 9v

Dogapult think about this way laptop battery are rated 11.1v not 12v and when new there are not holding up to 3hours?when the voltage will drop to low for your application the device will shot down

the big issue with this project is that a 9v snap connector is vulnerable to shorting. on the other end use a polyfuse and select one that trips around 500 ma. also insulate the pcb pins or better yet trim them and solder in the grooves at the ends of those blossom holders. i built a few of these 10 years ago to replace obsolete batteries in radios. the polyfuse is self resetting and the radio performance drops drastically at around 6v. which happens to be a safe end voltage for li-ion. a bms wuold be nice but i know to just pitch any cells that are run down too low. the biggest hazard is taken care of by the polyfuse.
