Here's a tutorial on how to make a 1950's circle skirt! Could it possibly be made out of a tablecloth? Certainly not! It's definitely not like everything I ever make is made out of a table cloth/sheet or anything...

Ahh you actually encouraged me to start sewing, so you can imagine my excitement that you made a circle skirt tutorial! I was in the process of making a circle skirt a few weeks ago but have been SO intimidated to use my sewing machine to sew on the buttons and make button holes so this is such great encouragement that I can just do it by hand! 🙌

Yes, I love the cherry tree! 🌸🌳 I mean, it’s all about the angles and framing cause if you shift it over a bit you’d see my neighbor’s truck, and our recycling bins aren’t far from there either. But the cherry tree really is a gift! I’m very fortunate to live in such a beautiful province.

I just discovered your fun channel when looking up circle skirts. This week I made a great circle skirt in 15 minutes with a mostly teal and navy mandala-pattern 66" round table cloth and a piece of navy elastic for the waist. Now I'm on the prowl for more nice tablecloths! I especially like that you hand sew. I grew up in the 50's. In the last year I got a bunch of vintage patterns, but didn't realize I was creating a complete vintage wardrobe until I heard you mention that clever idea. I made my first skirt when I was 10. That's 70 years ago! I'm so ready for a return to feminine flowy skirts, pin tuck tops, peplins, and nice, old-style cardigans! We used to wear 4 or 5 crinolines at a time because once washed they lost all the fluff! (I'll pass on that look.)

Lovely and simple video. What do I do if my fabric is not long enough to reach my desired length after I have folded it ? How do I do it in two pieces ?
@MirandaMilner
@MirandaMilner 9 ай бұрын
Instead of the first fold-in-half, just layer two separate pieces of fabric and treat one edge as though it’s a fold. Then just keep folding it in that pie-shape and cut out the pieces as usual. You may just need to make the waist ever so slightly bigger. Like 1 inch maybe. Once you cut it out, you should have two halves of the circle. Then just sew them together so it’s one full circle. (That’s why you need a slightly bigger waist, because you need enough seam allowance to sew the half-circles together.

If you were to take the circular fabric with the hole in the centre as it is, and not cut down for the fastening, could you put elastic in the waistband and it still look and feel as comfortable? I'm hoping to make some costumes for a production and it's best for dancing if they're elasticated, and much easier for me to make more of!
@MirandaMilner
@MirandaMilner 2 жыл бұрын
For sure! You’ll have to make the hole bigger so it fits over the hips, so each skirt will overall use a bigger area of fabric. The waist will also obviously have a bit of a gathered look rather than laying flat on the waist.

I put it in the wash plenty and it hold up fabulously! It’s one of my most worn garments. Just do stitches small enough that the thread doesn’t get caught on stuff. They don’t need to be microscopic, just not huge, and you should be fine! Also be careful with vintage thread. You always want to check first how strong old thread is by seeing how easily it breaks.

Need to know the size of table cloth you should buy to start the skirt!
@MirandaMilner
@MirandaMilner 7 ай бұрын
To estimate, I would say 2x the skirt length you want, plus at least 1/3 of your waist measurement. That should be the length of the shortest side of the tablecloth. That’s if you want it to be made in 1 piece. But you can also make 2 half-circles and put them together.

If I didn’t know better, I would swear that could be a poodle skirt. There would be this big poodle (usually black) at the base. Maw-rest her soul-did NOT have kind words for wearers of this skirt. She believed they belonged to or at least supported a trashy girls’ movement (a kind of sorority) they had back then. This is a very tastefully done garment indeed-just keep the poodles away from the base of this one!!

Wow I am amazed, why do you prefer hand sewing?
@MirandaMilner
@MirandaMilner 3 жыл бұрын
Well, after my electric sewing machine broke when I was around 12, I kind of had to hand sew for a long time. Not only did I just get used to it and start doing it more out of habit, but I also learned that it gave me a lot of control over the stitches that a machine couldn’t give me. Plus hand sewing isn’t super loud like a machine is so I can watch Netflix at the same time!

That can depend on your material. If you have a really drape-y fabric you might have some problems. Especially if the material is stretchy. That’s certainly something that’s best to avoid. But if you are determined to use a stretchy material, you can even out the way it hangs by putting it on a mannequin (or someone else to serve as a model) and trimming the long parts before you hem it.

how many yards did you use?
@MirandaMilner
@MirandaMilner 5 ай бұрын
For me, I needed a minimum of 1.8 yards if my math is correct. So 2 yards would be good. But it depends on a few things, one being your waist measurement. Mine is around 25” for reference. The other thing is how wide the fabric is. It needs to either be about the same as the length (the 1.8 yards I mentioned), or if it’s narrower, you’ll need twice the length to make the skirt out of 2 half-circles.

@MirandaMilner

Just make the measurement for the outer diameter of the circle bigger. The bigger the circle, the longer the skirt. But it does take a LOT of material to make a floor-length circle skirt.
@4forevergirl4
@4forevergirl4 Ай бұрын
Couldn’t you just do your waist measurement divided by the amount of folds it has?
@MirandaMilner
@MirandaMilner Ай бұрын
Technically kind of… but it would be harder to get a consistent curve for one thing. And it would be divided my how many layers of fabric, so if you folded it 3 times, you’d divide it by 8. And the amount of times you fold it depends on how thick your fabric is so it seemed more complicated to explain it that way. But if you find it easier that way, then yes that should work just fine!
