Part 5 of a series in which I guide you through the overall process of creating a 3D virtual avatar starting from nothing for use in VRM applications and VRChat, using Blender and Unity. Here we go over shape keys, working in Unity, hair physics, cloth physics, testing, optimization, finalization, and how to finally use our avatar in programs like VSeeFace.

I cannot help but comment on how much this tutorial series has carried me through my experience in making my own custom VRC avatar. What makes this series so special are 3 factors that most other tutorials only have 1 or 2 at best which is being; short but informative, significant but simple to understand, and specialized but also flexible. I was more than lucky to find this series buried beneath the never ending heaps of Blender/VRC/Unity/VTuber tutorials. One more thing that I greatly appreciate about this tutorial series is the compiling of advice/ techniques from other tutorials so instead of having to spend hours of your time figuring out how to do practically anything through endless tutorials, this simple 7 video series puts all of that information into a very efficiently short class course. Ultimately, if it were not for this series I highly doubt I would’ve been as successful as I am. I hope more people like me who are poor but have a lot of ambition can utilize this hidden jewel of KZfaq’s tutorial algorithm.

helpful tip if you didn't know it already, when prepping for your shape keys, it's a good idea to select and save several vertex groups, such as the bottom row of teeth. bottom lip, top lip, area on the sides of the lips, the area under the chin, etc. once those have been saved, you should locate the pivot point of your jaw and set your 3d cursor dead center of it, this will give you a repeatable and anatomically correct pivot for the lower jaw by selecting 3d cursor in the transform pivot point section.

I think the bone issue around minute 57:20 is because in blender you resized or rotated the bones in pose mode instead of edit mode, go back to blender and select the whole armature in pose mode and press "alt+g, alt+r and alt+s" and se if the same thing happens, in that case there's a trick change the pose position to rest position.

Multiple meshes can absolutely correspond to one shapekey. Or, technically, you can have multiple meshes correspond to their own shapekeys with the same name, which will be treated as one shapekey by most exported formats. If you keep it in Blender, I'd advise using a driver to hook the shapekey on all meshes to a single bone, so you don't have to go and change *all of them*. On export, pretty much any format worth its salt will merge all the same-named shapekeys.

a little trick for setting up bone exclusions or just inspector in general. Select all the bones you want to add, then drag them onto the title (so Exclusions for example, the actual word), inspector will automatically create an element for each.(So no need to change the size and drag them all in one by one). They will add to the bottom of the list, so if you start decreasing the size, it usually always will delete the last in the list. (almost a year later, but this is really helpful for tedious things, unity has a lot of these sort of tricks n shortcuts where you would think wouldn't have any functionality at all lol)

@@makorays I'd rather get good at one thing instead of spread thin since I alreay am spread very thin over many software and skills. I wonder if I can get by, taking commissions only for modeling and no rigging, or drawing for live 2D without rigging and outsrouce rigging to another artist.
@makorays
@makorays Жыл бұрын
@@SkyfishArt you can certainly do that, plenty of others do, just make sure you're modeling in a way that will make a rigger's job easier. helps to be in contact with one and ask about good practices.

@@makorays Do you know what's a good arena for making contacts with riggers for avatar making?

@@SkyfishArt uhhhhh i dunno, best guess would be an avatar creation discord server like vrchat's or vseeface's but i'm not even sure if that's the best idea

I have been watching a few of your videos, I am a furry artist and I was wanting to make a main that I only ever use into like this but I feel like its a whole different ball game from art... But I want to show my self on camera as my main, just like you.
