I came across this Acoustic iPhone Amplifier on Pinterest and had to make one. The awesome part is, no power required, just 4 pieces of wood glued together. I was surprised on how well it amplified the sound. I did this all for free. This would be great to use outside, camping, etc. Also you can adapt this to any phone, just change the measurements for the phone slot.

I am glad your design worked well for your needs. Here is some things you can do to improve the sound in your next build that would give you even better sound. In your design, the audio feeds to the bottom of circular hole through a wide channel that makes a 90 degree bend into the circle, and then bounces off the walls in the circular hole several times until eventually all the energy in the waves leave the hole. The biggest issue in that design is that it encourages multi path propagation of the sounds waves that result in some parts of a wave arriving at your ear sooner then other parts of the same wave, This means the audio is slightly distorted To improve the audio quality with fewer multi path modes, start with a narrow channel from your phone that gently tapers strait into a rectangular hole that feed the audio out with no bends. When looking down at your project, the bottom of the rectangular hole should be rounded so as to bounce the waves out immediately rather than bounce around several times on the walls of the hole. Less bouncing around also means less energy is absorbed into and dissipated inside your audio director, and more energy gets to the listeners ears in sync (makes it appear even louder) rather than spread out over time because of the bouncing around.

If you want to vastly simplify your life, cut the hole on piece 3 with a hole saw (preferably in a drill press), glue on piece two, rough out the hole, and finish with a laminate trim bit in the router, and repeat with piece 1. With denser wood than pine you might not have to do more than finish sanding, assuming you're using sharp carbide router tooling.

Siouxsin M I am making them now to sell, so I have it down pretty good. I cut the circles out with a jig saw, two half circle cuts each hole. Glue the three pieces together, then finish sand with a orbital spindle sander.

+WildmanProject Haha no dont bother, but you could make it follow a horn profile better, ie open the hole up more at front and so on, its an acoustic transformer or horn and is matching high impedance of phone driver to surrounding air. You could get a few % more from it.

hey wildman, i'm gonna use this and make instructions out of this on how to make a passive amplifier (year nine and making amplifiers), but i'm not gonna do this, i have my own plan, pretty simple and might not work, unfortunately, since it's got about 4 layers, layer 2 and 3 will be hollowed out (layer 3 will be slightly different from layer 2 so that it can hold the phone inside), the top is going to be rounded, also we had to make another thing, forgto what they called it, had to make what i was going to make at home, with anything i had at hand, and made it out of cardboard and celetape or something, and the top was rounded, so i had to work with 2 times pi times r, needed my dad to help. can you help me, have trouble remembering, is pi 3.14?

@@WildmanDesignCo You are correct. But I find using a jigsaw for anything other than straight cuts (regardless of how slow I go) is a pain the butt. I prefer the holesaw for three reasons. 1) Faster cuts 2) Cleaner cuts 3) I'm not as likely to get angry.

IPhone, I crap... otherwise, way to go. But, there is no amplification. That is, you are not amplifying the amount of energy in the sound coming from our phone. Rather, you are gaining directionality. Phones put their speaker on the back, or in your case, the bottom, thus sending sound away from your ears while you watch youtube videos. Your build redirects and focuses the sound to the listener.

Thanks for your opinion. Interesting to look at it that way. Just having fun making stuff, didn't put much thought into the science behind it.

@Keith Reynolds I beg to differ: "The horn can be thought of as an "acoustic transformer" that provides impedance matching between the relatively dense diaphragm material and the less-dense air. The result is greater acoustic output power from a given driver." - Wiki

At 0:32 you are showing us how to mark the wood with numbers so we don`t mix it up. I thought this really funny because you have marked the pieces of woods with numbers 1-3-2-4 while saying 1-2-3-4... ;) anywayz It is a good video of a nice project, and of course you fucked up the numbers so we wouldn`t... :)

Horn would've been easier, cost less, would have used a bit of brains to master the acoustical physics, but it would have also been as portable as one of those useless iPhone cases. I remember before all these geniuses even thought to amplify a cellphone I refolded a cardboard box on a jobsite and had music and speakerphone conversations in tight spaces of buildings where we couldn't even get a small boom box in. I should become an Etsy entrepreneur and quit my "useless" day job to join the liberal scum... :D
