Today, we are making a back saw with Bad Axe Tool Works. I recently traveled to their shop to watch my saw come together.

As a metalworker and jewelry maker, that was incredibly fun to watch. And the tools! The sharpening machine in particular is. To. Die. For. I once had the pleasure of using an old, restored Bridgeport mill and it had the same steady, elegant presence of a tool that knows exactly what it is about. Thanks for sharing this with us, James! It's always a delight to learn about people dedicated to making the best quality tools. Old or new, there's a profound joy in using tools we have a connection to, one way or another.

I appreciate this series since the economy being what it is, people are more curious than ever where their money is going. People need to know that a product is more than just a fancy label tacked on to product built by the same shop making the cheap version.

Thanks for a really interesting and informative video. It's very gratifying to see the folks at Bad Axe Tool Works doing so much of the labour by hand. Even when using mechanical aids--that amazing sharpening machine, for example--a human operator controls each stroke. In short, the machine is an extension of the artisan, not the other way around! There's just no substitute for this. And when it comes to the crucial test, cutting into that plank of white oak, there nothing mechanical to be seen--just a human arm and a square.

James, great video! It's great to get a saw that is made for you, size, handle size, cut, and finish. Certainly not disposable! Any problem, it can be reworked for many years.

Lovely saw. I was wondering: is the exposed toe good for anything?? I think it just make the balance more comfortable (less weight far from your hand), but there might be some odd cut I´m not seeing.

I tried to make my own saw just ordering some spring steel. If I’m not mistaken it was recycled. Question, why is the folded back sitting so high on the saw for? It looks like maybe a 1/4” of the saw is into the folded back. Thanks great video.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 7 ай бұрын
The back is about half way into the saw at the toe. This gives it flexibility to move where it needs to.
