Step-by-step DIY demonstration for making a belt for pulleys. This uses heatshrink tubing but also talks about using urethane belts and a shoelace, as well as a string. Also gives tips on selecting a belt material. So basically, it's a homemade belt for pulleys.
Watch my how-to video, www.wonderhowto... How to use heat-shrink tubing, shoelaces or urethane belts for pulley systems on WonderHowTo.

Thank you. I spent most of today looking for this idea!! I will definitely try it!!! Erich from New Zealand

Small correction... the string slips because it has a different coefficient of friction than the tubing - not because it has a smaller surface area. It's counter-intuitive, but friction is actually independent of surface area. If you had thicker string and the same force it would still slip. If you had thinner heat-shrink tubing it would stick. You can see this easily if you imagine two belts - one made from a rubber band and the other from a length of fishing line. Even if the fishing line is thicker than the rubber band, it will still slip. The rubber band will have a far higher coefficient of friction with most materials than fishing line.

@ton2xmilton Sorry, that's the only term I know for it. Go to google.com and search for "heat shrink". You can find it in stores that sell electrical parts like resistors, capacitors, wires, transformers, ... Radio Shack is one example.

Nice thanks for the tips. I just need the ability to move maybe 1lb of force super slow for about 6ft. Belts seem the way to go.

I was wondering what to use for my 3D printed belts. Have tried those yellow-brown rubber bands. They seem to do a nice work if you set the distance between pulleys correctly. But i dont have that option so im going to try that heatshrink tube. Thanks!

They make mini belts for 4wd RC cars. They have better grip and are very strong. Just as another option.

Hi Really enjoyed the video. Was hoping you would go bigger. I've searched the internet and can not found what I need. My mower agreed my NEW belt. I've ordered one, but it The grass needs to be cut. When I was a kid mama had and old new home sewing machine. That belt was just a fat round piece of rawhide lacing. When it would break we Punched a small hole in each end and used a s mall piece of copper that we put Thru the holes and mashed into a C shape. I also remember seeing Daddy do the same thing on our old trucks, cars and walk behind tractor.. My mower takes a 140 inch v belt. The OEM part is 80.00. I am thinking of fixing a makeshift. I thought about using a 3/8 in. piece of water hose or a piece of inter tube. Any suggestions?

I tried this for a 8mm cine projector shutter drive belt, it worked well for a few runs but eventually the heat generated by the lamp caused the heatshrink tubing to alter size. Ok for a temp fix though.

throthelens It was for experimenting with non-conventional energy production experiments back in the day when I used to do that. Details are here if you're curious rimstar.org/equip/hv_horiz_rotating_test_platform_1007.htmGlad to hear it at least worked for you as a temp fix. Recently I soldered two ends of a flexible, but thickly insulated, wire together to make a belt. You can see that one here plus.google.com/116395125136223897621/posts/BFpWcDignjW There was too much friction overall for the motor to turn in that case. Still working on it.

Question: do you have any good resources for SLOW moving pulley motors that can plug into a wall outlet? Looking for this smaller scale to mount on a ceiling for a Peter Pan themed thing I'm doing.
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 7 жыл бұрын
An easy slow moving motor is a microwave oven motor, the motor that turns the try in the microwave oven. Find a microwave oven that someone's thrown out and take the motor out from the bottom. It runs on AC from a wall socket (120V or 240V depending on where you live). See my video about my 1st gravity motor here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNynlqyAnrORpXk.html at 31 seconds in to see me take one from a microwave oven. I used it as a generator instead of a motor but that doesn't matter. I also attach a pulley to the shaft later in the video.

One should never hold a knife in ones hand when doing anything other than cutting with that knife. An unattended knife edge will cut skin. I've done it many times.

Would a rubber band still work?
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 3 жыл бұрын
Probably. It depends on your pulleys and the amount of load (how hard they are to turn) but I've used rubber bands for some pulleys.

For example, I used a rubber band for this Van de Graaff generator kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNmEaZyJ09Dcl4k.html

Where did you purchase the Pulleys?
@RimstarOrg

The pulleys are actually not pulleys. They are the hubs (center parts) for wheels from an old K'NEX set. You can see them in the photo here www.amazon.com/Micro-Power-Turbo-Racers-11104/dp/B00K1SWG30. Often you can use wheel hubs like these as pulleys.

In my recent video Gravity Light - Making and Enhancements (version 1) I showed how I stitched together two ends of a bungee cord and wrapped it with black electrical tape and that worked very well. However, your mower might put more strain on either the stitching or the tape than the makeshift belt can handle, but then again it might work. I guess if you want a V shape you could tape a smaller diameter bungee cord to the side of the bigger one.
