Just found your page and am in love with all your projects-- ( the ones I have watched so far, anyways lol ) I've always wanted to make a Tome but the video I watched long ago scared me off from it , with ancient tools and leather stretching machines etc . You have totally convinced me I can make a nice one and I appreciate your detailed steps that is in laymen terms :) I have some torn printer - tea- coffee stained paper drying right now for the FOLDER cover type book to start with . I'll be getting some chipboard soon for the BIG ONE !!! Thank you so much , God bless !!

hospital packaging for sterile products is often made with a Tyvek like material. I am a lactation consultant and I re-appropriate these tear offs from breast pump supplies. Its great and is otherwise discarded. I am glad to keep stuff out of landfills and love free supplies!

About the cardboard...I bought a heavy board as you are using here, and had it divide into to pcs after I put glue on. It was a water-base glue. So, I ended up having to glue it back together. I figured, "Oh, I can do that with cereal/cracker boxes!" Cut the pieces and glue together. I like to alternate the grain of the cardboard for strength. A 3-ply is really strong! I love your tutorial here, and am sure I'll learn lots! I love to make books! You're so thorough and clear in the presentation. Thanks, Pam! Hugs!

Hello Pam, I haven't watched all of these set of videos yet, but have put them in order in my private playlist so I can watch them in succession. By the way, Dollar Tree sells a 2 pack set of large yellow legal pads for a buck (of course) and the back covers are very thick chipboard, alot thicker backs than the ones at Walmart. Just FYI for anyone. And Pam, I just want to let you know how much I appreciate your video series like these. Because I just can't afford to pay for online classes to do these same things. So BIG, HUGE HUGS. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope you and your crew are doing well. I sure would love to have someone like you in my neighborhood, I'd be in seventh heaven. Take care and God bless. Sincerely Becky B from Arkansas

Just an FYI, the tyvek tape that you are using, isn't the actual Tyvek woven fiber. It is a different type of plastic, like packing tape. It does However have stronger adhesive and is alot more durable... but not as durable as the tyvek. My farther owns a construction company and I've worked for him sine I was 13. I hope you have a wonderful day 😊

If you use the fringe and back covers of a real book( no spine ,just the two covers..When you put the Tyvek tape on the new spine and then attach to book cover you cover part of the cover that you like...any suggestions?

Question: Have you ever used the boards in binders? Do you know if the chipboard is the same as the type of board that fills binders?

I have not but I think those boards would be as thick as book board and those would work well :)

I’ve been wanting to make a book for a long time now. I’ve collected pretty much everything I needed to construct the book. I have a question for you about the cover. My grandson works at a pizzeria and while I was in there i was looking at the pizza boxes he was making and then I thought to myself, 🤔 hmmmm, these would be great for the covers and spines I think. That’s my question. Do you think these would be good for making a book? I can get as many as I want. Small medium and large. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for this easy-to-follow tutorial! I'm in the middle of binging this series before I take that deep breath, take the plunge and make a junk journal. I really like the idea of making the tome vs. a small journal. One question, as I cannot find the answer anywhere online: what is the difference between using gesso and using an acrylic paint like Folk Art?
@JP-xp6pf
@JP-xp6pf 4 жыл бұрын
Jennifer Bucher - I'm not sure exactly but guessing that gesso may have a more matte finish compared to the gloss/shine of acrylic paint.

Great question...in my experience they work in a similar manner. Both will attain opaque coverage. I agree with the comment below that the gesso may be a bit more flat than glossy like acrylic sometimes looks :) Both will work :)

@@ThePaperOutpost and @J P thank you! I have a few bottles of Folk Art paint that I'd like to use in varying shades of white, off-white, and black before I invest in gesso. Thank you both!

Hi Vickie, I don't see why not :) As long as it can bear the strain of the weight of the journal and the corners don't bend it should be fine :)

My son teased me for fussing you when you couldn’t hear when you were cutting the spine parts. 3/4 is more than 1/2. You were saying to cut less than 1/2- maybe 3/4. That would be bigger.
