How To Make A Big Muff Work Live

Here is an example of how to make a Big Muff work better in a live situation. I used a 70s Strat with a JB Jr. pickup in the bridge played through a 70s JMP 100 Watt Marshall (25 Watt speaker cab). I am using a 70s Big Muff with a late 90s TS9 Tube Screamer. The Cry Baby is a fairly new 535Q model.

Muff cuts the mids, but the TS puts them back, this is why it cuts through more. When you add the wah, you can boost the treble so it will cut through even more. Great trick, I also do this all the time.Cheers John!

the Tubescreamer also cuts a lot of bass, which the Muff boosts a lot, so it helps tighten it up and add some of the mids back in.

An EQ pedal can make fine adjustments, im not dismissing the tube screamer or wah though. They sound good 👌🏽

Putting an overdrive in front of the muff is a great idea. The hi-pass filter in the overdrive keeps the muff from compressing all that sludgy low end. Also works great with compressors and can be done with an eq pedal as well. Its basically eq before compression, which yields a much better signal in my experience. My guitar signal almost always passes through a Blues Driver (or other overdrive) with the gain really low first, even for cleans, so the amp isn't hit with excess low end, and it works even better with a muff.

Another way is to put an EQ pedal AFTER the Muff to pull the mids back out and push the other frequencies back down if needed. (Definitely not saying either way's better. Just sharing another effective technique for those who are interested.)

Big Muffs are awesome. You can use them in so many different ways. I have a modded one (LEDs in the compression/diode section, boosted mids) and would keep the sustain minimal, but volume high and put it into my old Sunn Model T's as a "boost". The tone was ungodly.

Also a treble booster after a Muff/Fuzz peddle helps to boost the mids, since muffs and most fuzz peddles have more of a scooped tone frequency.

I actually use mid and treble boosters on both sides of my muff (in this case a black arts - Pharaoh), a totally dimed DS1 before, that i use for solos, maxed out climaxes and palm mute chugging, and then a cruchier less raspy but boosty overdrive after, which i use as my ‘clean sound but with the gain pretty far down (in this case an Acapulco gold clone with an added knob to seperate volume and gain). I like to have a very wise range of both ultra woolen bassy frequencies and just as wide range of attacky treble to get a bit aggressive when it’s suitable for what i wanna do.

putting a wah after all your distortion accentuates the filter sweep more, whereas when you put it before distortion the filter sweep itself kinda gets lost. my favourite example of wah after distortion is Planes Over The Skyline by Swervedriver. The wah is really accentuated, but it still sounds great. Same with bass distortion and envelope filters, the filter always sounds better after distortion.

@randyjamz1448
@randyjamz1448 8 жыл бұрын
+Thom Bailey You can flatten the mids and it still sounds like a Muff. With the TS9 boosting the mids, didn't it still sound like a Muff? I do it by changing the capacitor (C8 on the board) from 10nF to 4.7nF and it works amazingly well. I keep a stock Muff and compared to my modded one, the modded one just sounds thicker or fuller, but still has that Muff buzz, which is three stages of diode clipping.

I have my DS-1 set with max drive, tone about 8 o’clock, and level adjusted to the room. I set the pedals these ways for their separate tones and enjoy the boosted Super Muff sound. Elk style Muffs (like the EQD Wata fuzz) are also already higher gain and it sounds burly as shit.

I have noise problems with both the TS and my Little Big Muff. Your tone is excellent, basically what I'm after. Billy Corgan tone or sometimes I want a kind of Dave Gilmour sound by adding a chorus or flanger and skipping the wah. Any suggestions for dealing with unwanted noise issues?
@johngidlund
@johngidlund 7 жыл бұрын
I know what you are asking for sure, when combining the TS9 with the big muff (or even the big muff by itself) it is a pretty noisy pedal. There are noise gate pedals but they tend to choke the sound or don't help much. Honestly, I just got very good at shutting the pedal off in between pauses/breaks. The big thing is people don't notice live and in a studio situation you can edit that stuff out. I tend to pull back the gain of the Muff and TS9 because the combination is plenty of sustain! You can also roll back you volume on the guitar in between pauses and that tends to be enough. Hope that helps.
@mattgilbert7347
@mattgilbert7347 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, man, I will have to convince the band that nobody will notice the noise and I have a pretty good loop switcher. Cuts down on "tapdancing". I've been playing around with a noise suppressor at the very end of the chain, doesn't choke the sound too much if I am using mods(for some reason) but if it is just OD and/or Fuzz, yeah, you lose something. I don't want to go to humbuckers even tho they are not as noisy because singles sound so good with gain stacking!
@leeryan5667

I run the big muff rams head into an xotic bb preamp into a clean but high mid eq'd amp and I get some cracking tones and sustain, add a bit of chorus and a carbon copy delay and Gilmour pulse tones all the way. I recently bought a Donner Sophgate noise suppressor, I run the big muff into the bb preamp on the Sophgates loop with pretty much all of the settings at their lowest and it does well to silence it between solos etc. Also by running it this way you can completely bypass both pedals with the Sophgate switch good for comfortably numb allowing rhythm into solo with one switch. I will put up a video if you were interested in hearing it?

Kaleb Bryant the drive is 1/4 up so just a slight breakup... the volume is about 3/4 up. Tone about 1/4 up.

It is a late 90’s Ibanez TS9. I think I bought it about 1997.

One of my favorite tones on a big muff is with the wah fully down on the treble position, on a single coil neck pickup. Gives it like a super dirty blues tone. It sounds noisy as shit but the tone is absolutely screaming.

S9 is set as follows: Drive 1/4 up, Volume is 3/4 up and Tone is 1/4 up. All the vintage muffs are different in terms of knob placement (I have owned 3 vintage and 3 reissue). The one in the video has all the knobs 3/4 up. Hopefully that helps to get close enough.
