Today I am creating the first of our May limited edition soaps, available to purchase from our website on 1st May 2021.
We are back to natural, plant based colourants today - not that you would know it from the end result! Madder powder and Annatto seeds provide today's beautiful orange and pink tones and we use these to create a 3 layered soap, which reminds me of a summer sunset.
In this video we will show you how we create the soap using infused olive oils and show you the techniques that we use to create this soap.
If you wish to have a go at this design, you will need the following ingredients:
218g Sodium Hydroxide
480g Water
680g Olive Oil (340g infused with Madder powder at 5% and 340g infused with Annatto seeds at 5%)
198g Sweet Almond Oil
114g Castor Oil
368g Coconut Oil
150g Shea Butter
76g Cocoa Butter
40g Pink Fizz & Pomelo Fragrance Oil (or any other soap safe fragrance or essential oil that you wish to use)
Calendula petals to decorate
If you enjoy our videos and soap making tutorials please do give us a like and subscribe :-)
We will be uploading new soap making videos every Friday and new behind the scenes/business focused videos every Tuesday!

@@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany have you tried using rhubarb root powder or yellow dock? They can also give a lovely range of pinks. I've used the rhubarb root powder (smells of pickles) and, with differing amounts of heavily infused oil, obtained a range from a dusky rose, to a deep wine colour, even months after the fact!

@@emilyfleischmann I haven't no, but funnily enough I was only looking yesterday at getting some Rhubarb powder to experiment with. I think I am going to have to do it now!

I wondered , do you think that it is posible to infuse hibiscus to olive oil. They have such lovely colour and skin benefits. I Love the sunset soap💛🌞 it looks beautiful
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Anette. I am sure it would be possible to infuse to take advantage of the skin benefits. If you were planning using the infused oil in soap it is fairly likely that the pretty colour would not last through saponification as many natural colours do not. I could be wrong though, now you have me wanting to try it myself to see!

So beautiful! How long do you normally infuse olive oil with natural colorants? I'm trying to transition from micas into natural colorants. Thank you 😁
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Agata. Normally I actually use the quick heat method for infusion, which involves using heat to speed up the infusion and they can then be ready in a few hours. If I am using the traditional method without heat then I normally leave them for at least 4 weeks before using.

Lovely soap! I have a question about using homegrown calendula, can you get an assessment for something you grow by yourself? :)
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Anna. Yes, if it is a homegrown herb of flower (such as Calendula, Rose Petals, Lavender etc) then you will be able to get an assessment for cold or hot process soap with it included. Unfortunately you can't use homegrown items in other cosmetic products though, so for something like a balm you would need to use commercial alternatives. Also, it is important that the flowers are homegrown and not foraged as foraged ingredients are treated differently to homegrown and cannot be used at all.
