In this video I build a bass guitar inspired by a video from the early days of KZfaq. You can check out my inspiration for this project here (this is not the original upload, I seem to have lost it): • Black Sabbath Ironma...
The maker of that original bass guitar uploaded his own explanation of his build process which you can view here (I made some design changes for my own build): • Home Made Bottle Bass ...
This video was viewer supported by all of you who have contributed to these projects through Patreon. Thank you! A special thanks to my top Patrons: Syniurge, Matthew Leitzke, TheBackyardScientist, Enzo Breda Lee, & John Johnson!
Check out my Patreon page here and consider contributing if my videos make you happy: / nighthawkprojects
Metric conversions (approximate):
Neck dimensions: 1.5 x 0.75 x 40 inches = 4 x 2 x 100cm
Fingerboard dimensions: 1.5 x 0.25 x 24 inches = 4 x 0.5 x 61cm
4 inch headstock = 10cm
34 inch scale length = 86cm
Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the reference, buddy!!! :D I'm the guy in the original video. Or at least the rip of it, as my video has been blocked by Black Sabbath.. Your bass guitar is prettier than mine!

Thanks for your inspiration! That sucks about your video. It's a very high chance it was blocked automatically by KZfaq's copyright detection system back in the day. Did you appeal? The system is a bit more lenient now and would probably let the video stay up while just giving a cut of the advertising revenue to Black Sabbath or the label. If you wanted to post a new copy just let me know and I'll switch out the link in the video description.

You're also making it into a 4 String since the neck is wide enough to accommodate those 2 additional strings. I'm making a 5 String version of it w/ a Low B cause the Low B is punchy.

Hey everyone! It has been way too long. I've been recovering from some burnout from overworking myself this last summer and had some significant life changes that slowed the production of this video further. It's very good to be back. I have a number of new videos already in the works so you should be seeing new content frequently again from here on out. I hope you enjoy this project, and please let me know as always if you give it a try for yourself! As of right now this video has been demonetized by KZfaq for reasons only their algorithms understand. As the monetization system here becomes more and more unstable I want to really thank those of you who have supported my videos on Patreon. It makes all the difference to know I'm not counting 100% on KZfaq's system to keep these videos going. www.patreon.com/NightHawkProjects

Every company old enough reaches a point where their greed outpaces and overshadows any good idea they started with. KZfaq is such company. With Patreon just reaching that point yesterday it may become impossible to sustain a living based on production of videos like before. It is scary seeing what is greed doing to this world.

Suggestion: Get a guitar tuner on your phone (there are loads of them available for free) and actually find the correct position of your frets. Then mark those spots with a marker or something at the top of your neck. Should be helpful especially for beginners.

This is pretty damn cool. I wonder if it would be possible to make a sort of homebrew classical string instrument like this. I play the cello, and I think I might give this a try when I have the time. The structure of a cello has some significant differences, but I'm sure there's a way to make something like this bass.
@melloyellobelly
@melloyellobelly 6 жыл бұрын
I was thinking this while watching the video as well. It'd be great if a similar sound to a true cello could be achieved with a DIY instrument like this because then maybe I could finally get around to learning to play it without shelling out two grand

Being a bass player who learned on an upright I can completely understand your frustrations with finding notes... that being said another great way to find notes would be to use a tuner and then make marking on the side of the neck for a visual aesthetic of where the frets would/should be. If you only have specific tones you can play then you could always tune the strings and find the frets that way. So for instance in the case of your G and C strings, C is the 4th note in a G Major scale so C on the G string should be fret 5. from there you could also find the 7th fret position of the C string using harmonics. from there the 6th fret should be fairly easy to find. Of course this goes in depth of how to find some of the more tricky frets but it does give you a way to find more frets too! Another great song/bass line to find frets would be Billie Jean by M.J. because its essentially just going between 2 frets as well. Anyway, great video as usual and look forward to your next project! P.S. you should try out the "Green Flash" that the King of Random created a few days ago and see what pyrotechnic application you could come up with (this one would probably be more for a personal/hobbyist project rather than a youtube project though).

The cantankerous me before I’ve done shadow work would have critically criticized your clean cut, freshly combed, well dressed, beautiful spoken, planned and organized as an over polished cacophony. Good idea to have your right hand in the bottle to pluck the cords. I imagine the reverberation from the strings really plays with resistance more from inside the body rather than outside. Peace be with you.
