Today we are making an Epoxy Resin Burnisher Handel out of katalox and epoxy. This is a project I have wanted to work on for years. I have been using a simple rod without a handle as a burnisher to sharpen card scrapers for years now and thought it was about time to make my own burnisher.
You can find the burnisher kit here: www.woodbywright.com/shop

I would really love to see a video on multiple ways to make a comfortable handle without a lathe. I don't have access to one. Don't really want to buy pre-made handles. I would love to see a tried and true method for making handles with saws, chisels, rasps and elbow grease. What do you think? (I love the foot pedaled lathe. I have no room for one, but it is so cool. Watched how you and Hand Tool Rescue cleaned them up)

I have a few videos showing that. Several on saw handles and plane totes. As well as octagonal chisel and tool handles.

I think the ferule could be smaller in diameter, about 3/4 of what it is, but other than that, I love it. As soon as I can, I'll be ordering a kit. I always like the look of the gunsmithing screwdrivers that have the flat sides with the slits cut into them. I think I'll be going with that style when I make mine.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like fun. I went with the larger feral size because some people like to use it as a reference surface when burnishing. But surprisingly the smaller ferals also cost almost twice as much.

It is not nesisary, but recommended. It protects the wood from splitting.

What vacuum chamber/pump do you use? I read that it must have a tempered glass lid for wood stabilizing and resin degassing?

I use some that I find on Amazon. Here's a video where I talk about it in more detail. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJiaeMebvqvIYYE.html if you go on Amazon it says do not use this with cactus juice but that's more or less them covering their backside. Most vacuum pumps out there have that same clarification on them.

And swiss watches. I dont have a lathe as of yet so I got my self a 4 in 1 rasp/file thing and am planning on using zebra wood for my handle, I do have question though: would a pen blank be wide enough after rounding for the ferrel(?)?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like fun. No pin blank would not be big enough. Those come three-quarter inch square and the ferrule on this is an inch and 1/8 inside diameter

Hey, James, just wondering: could it be that your lathe should be 2-man-operated? Like a master-carpenter doing the work and an apprentice doing the pedalling? Seems odd, the way you have to do both tasks, doesn't it? I find most old-timey machines/tools are really efficient, and your lathe somehow isn't, know what I mean?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 4 жыл бұрын
No it is designed to be a one man show. It is actually very easy. It is one of those things that looks odd tell you try it.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo Being a bike-riding Dutchman it is hard to see anyone making these kind of awkward backwards pedalling motions, haha! Loved that lathe-restauration video too, btw

@@c.a.g.1977 I know what you're saying. I usually put in around 3,000 mi a year on my bike and when I first saw someone using one of these I thought it was going to be a total challenge to learn to peddle backwards. but honestly I had to think about it for about a second at the beginning and after that it just natural your legs don't know the difference It was really surprising.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo Well, maybe one day, if I ever get a decent sized woodshop, I'll get one of these lathes to try it out for myself. But for now I'll stick to buying smaller tools, like your card scraper and burnisher set. I get a new tool, and I get to support one of my favourite KZfaq Channels! 😀
