Here it is, the long awaiting ink dip pen video. This week I show how I make these from beginning to end in a marathon 40 minute video. There's a lot of information here, be the throwing, trimming, glazing or firing so if you have any queries along the way make sure to leave a comment and I'll do my best to reply! Thanks as always for watching and I hope you enjoy watching how I make these ink dip pottery pens.

One day I'll put my hand around one of these beauties. I am really curious about how they feel in hand, their weight balance and such compared with the wooden holders I have. I saw you made very few hexagonal holders, I bet they look stunning once glazed too.
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby 2 жыл бұрын
Aha you spotted them! They worked well, I glazed them with a tenmoku so they're entirely black but on the edges they break to a red hue. The funny thing is though, as these are thrown items, the spiral imparted into them as they're made unwinds during the firing, meaning that the hexagonal facets twist. So they're no longer straight.. I should have included a section about those in the video but I'm waiting to make matching inkwells for them. You've got a keen eye!
@juanQuedo
@juanQuedo 2 жыл бұрын
@@floriangadsby They caught my eyes 👀. I am sure that spiralling is a feature rather than something seen as a fault, a happy mistake that Bob Ross would say.

A friend of mine gave me a tactical pen one time. It was wonderful but it was weighted to heavy in the back. I write in a molluskina, very old school style, and the tactical pen was just a bit much in the back end. I really like teakwood pens. They're very light and versatile, and you can let the hardware do the weighing down in the back end...

This is impossible to make, however you make it looks so simple. The point you made about clay having a memory is a difficult lesson I guess every potter learns through experience, I learnt mine recently 🙂

As a really novice potter I watch your videos avidly and they"ve taught me so much. I am going through all the videos. Last night I watched the making of the ink pen .Bearing in mind the ignorance of a novice, I was wondering why the pen shaft is skillfully thrown when the clay could just be rolled into a 'sausage' shape and cut of at the desired length. Please don't think this is a stupid question. I really want to know. Thanks.

Hey Florian, the edge you remove at the last stage of trimming feels like it would be a nice design feature to make the pens go along with the rest of your work, instead of being so round in shape. Have you ever considered keeping any forme of an edge there? Thanks for another great video!
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve made some like that, and you’ll actually see one like it in the video around halfway through when I put the metal ferrule in a leather hard pen. The problem is the edge is at the base of the pen, so the glaze floods down it and sort of overhangs on the edge rather than breaking over it. If it were possible to fire the pens upside-down then the edge would break through the glaze in a way that’s more characteristic with the rest of my work. If that makes sense. Thanks so much for watching!

I wonder if you could do something with Rajiv Surendra for these pens? He's a calligrapher but also has some pottery training as well, so not only would you get that sexy footage of the pen being used, you'd also be able to talk through some aspects of what would make the best possible calligraphy pen with someone who understands what you do.

Dude has a hitchhikers thumb. I've noticed it's a trait of skilled hand workers and artists. The natural light coming in from the skylights lightens and darkens with the clouds passing over. It reminds me of my art classrooms in college, I was an art major. I did calligraphy and sign painting for years. I'd be honored to make a video using your pen set. I know several lettering styles.
