Jen - These are so cute and with a folded star in coordinating fabrics it makes a great Christmas present. But I changed your instructions slightly and sewed the coasters in two steps. First I layered the background fabric, a 4 1/2" piece of batting, and the inner (not seen) fabric together as your described but I sewed an X corner to corner on the diagonal to prequilt these together. Then I followed your instructions for layering the four patch folded fabrics on top of my prequilted square, sewing and turning. Having the batting be 1/4" smaller all around made for less bulk when turning.

Love these so much! I make new ones each year and at Holiday Parties, I serve my wine or champagne in stemmed glasses with one of these at the base (the opening allows you to slip a wine glass base inside) to help guests keep up with their glass and also protect my furniture. I love this fabric!

I am a beginner and love your tutorials. This was the first project I made. I made them as gifts for a summer girls weekend using summer/beach squares. They were a hit so I then made them as gifts for a family/girls Thanksgiving shopping weekend using Christmas/Holiday squares. I also made a set for myself using the hourglass pattern. So fun!

A girlfriend taught me this when I was a beginner 30 yrs ago. What's interesting is that I fold my squares diagonally, to form triangles--everything else is the same!

I absolutely LOVE this idea! And if you are having a dinner party or a wine party, etc. You could put numbers in there for a drawing or gift cards, etc!

I love making these for housewarming gifts, Christmas 🎄 Hot Chocolate baskets, sports themes for Rec rooms, and even have a couple for mycsewing room area. I make them much larger and make them into Hot Pads for a Hostess gift at holidays or house warming gifts.

Hi Jen - LOVE this idea, I did make on as a practice and I did something just slightly different. When you sandwiched the back and inside middle with the wadding, I then quilted that together. Then placed and machined the 4 pieces of folded fabric on top as you did. Then, your back is quilted and I thought it may help it stop shifting when they are washed. GREAT VIDEO - I like it when you demonstrate a project. I loved the material you used, but I don't seem to be able to purchase that particular Charm Pack in the UK grrrr. For the inside fabric you could also use a fabric with text to have a nice hidden message. I have some printable fabric. May make a few with personal message. Would be fun to see how long it takes a person to find it.

What weight batting would you use to protect furniture from hot beverages?

Hi Jennifer, was that wadding you put inside. I have heavy and medium weight interfacing, thermolam, vlieseline G700, H640, H630 or insul - brite that you put in oven gloves. Can I use any of them in coasters, placemats and pot holders. I see you didn't do the stitch in the ditch.

Hi Leanna, Yes, Jennifer did put a layer of batting in this coaster, but that is optional. This project still turns out great without the batting too! If you do decide to add batting, any of the ones you suggested would be fine. Happy sewing! -Bethany

Hey Jen did you know the stem of a wine glass fits inside the fold and then your guests know which glass is theirs when they set it down. You can make these in several colors.....
