This giant lesson is essentially a mini documentary on how to create a classic rock 80s metal hit track. Of course it's several decades late, but I certainly don't mind- there's so much to learn through out this process, from wielding music theory to collaborating with other musicians, and I believe this lesson does a good job of demonstrating that entire process and what it can lead to.
It also features the one and only Kerry Devine as a guest vocalist to guide us through the twists and turns of melodies in the fifth mode. His work can be found here:
Rockstar Roadshow (National Act): rockstarroadshow.com/
LAVA Rock (Chicagoland Area): lavarockband.com/home
All of this was done to highlight how to use the Mixolydian scale/mode but I got a bit carried away. Once I realized I was having a vocalist help, I felt obligated to turn it into a full single instead of a little musical tidbit as I've made in my other Riffing With The Modes videos. It takes me a TON of time to finish a single like this, well over 100hrs was spent just on the song for recording, tracking, editing, mixing, mastering, tweaking. The lesson video was nearly as taxing, but I did elicit some help in editing the basic parts of my music video so thanks to Joe Watychowicz for filming some of those fun 80s shots for the video and doing some basic editing work.
What's really weird, is Ben Eller happened to post a video describing 80's hair metal pedal tone riffing on the exact same day as I posted this video. Check out his video here to understand the concept in MUCH more detail! • The Secret Sound of th...
The song will post separately as a music video here in a few days once the track is up on spotify. To be quite honest, I could talk for another 40 minutes about obscure and tiny decisions that HAD to have been made when producing this song but I had to reign it in somewhere, so if you're interested in a part two let me know!

@@Raisphere Rick is divisive. On one hand he is a solid teacher, especially for advanced theory concepts. However, he's full of himself like the overpriced ear training app. Once I called out that James Jammerson did not play bass on "I Want You Back" - Jackson 5 and told me in the comments "who gives a shit?" A few weeks later he did his best ROCK bass tones ever and he credits Wilton Felder for "I Want You Back" and despite making a disclaimer at the beginning saying it's strictly ROCK tones he makes exceptions for two motown bassists in Jammerson and Felder. Dude refuses to acknowledge when he's wrong and will double down.

This was the most work I've ever put into a single YT project, topping my 7 modes/7 musicians. I'm gonna make the next few videos a bit shorter so it's not so long in between uploads but I hope you think the wait was worth it! Also, the single will be on spotify soon, when it's up I'll be reuploading the music video to the channel here as a standalone video. Until then the mp3 is posted for all patrons or you can skip to the song at 0:31:52. ALL HAIL BEARDSTANK AND KERRY DEVINE! Oh and make sure too look for me in the reflection of kerry's glasses, more than one instance where i'm caught red-handed grinning like an idiot while filming lmao. I'm 51 now so the 80s is in my blood :-) I searched for Mixolydian and your video popped on the list, watched the whole 40 min and I must comment! First of all wow, how you built it and explained everything... I'm speechless... you understand music writing in levels that I will probably never will, it was really enlightening how much thought you gave this, and for that you have my total respect!!! Now, the song, oh god, don't get me wrong, I know to where you aimed and you made it there 110%... but I must confess I HATED those bands that did Metal Pop back in the 80s :-) I did love Van Halen to death, and still does, but they where something else. Ratt? Toto? hated 95% of their material (tho I did love Warren Di Martini and Steve Lukather as guitar players). This song here, no matter what my taste is, if it was written in the 80s, it would have been getting radio time for sure and (sadly) some success for the band :-) Amazing how you did it... pfff

Can you do something like this with 60’s - 70’s psychedelic rock? Like, Jimi Hendrix or Pink Floyd or Santana or The Beatles. How they employ the Dorian mode, how the develop a song to start off slow and slowly climb to a climax with a great solo, and what not? I would love this. I’m super interested in writing music like this, but I’m just not sure how everything really goes together. Thanks!

There are a lot of music youtubers out there going deep on theory or gear, and they're great, but as far as I can tell you're one of the few and definitely the best at showing what it's all for; actually making music. Learning theory just for learning's sake is great, but putting all the pieces together and actually USING it might be the hardest part and it's awesome that you've kept your focus on that. Anyway, great job on the video, the song, and the hilarious music video.

Mixolydian is my favorite of the seven major modes, so when you first announced this series I was instantly hyped for the eventual mixolydian one. I've been waiting for it this whole time, and imagine my pleasure at seeing a 40-minute video show up! This is awesome! Your videos just get better and better. Because of this pandemic, my finances currently look like a tuna salad got into a fight with a jello mold, but I am gonna sign up for your Patreon as soon as I'm able.

I am so impressed by this whole video! I love how in-depth you went with everything, music theory, feel, lyrics, arrangement etc. I am also glad that you didn't go too much into detail with music production, because then this video would have been way too long and stuffed with information. The way it is, though? Brilliant. And the song is top notch, it's exactly how you described it after playing the whole thing through at the end. Nice work!
