Hi everyone! In this easy to follow Bonsai Video I show you How To Make a Clump Style Bonsai also known as a "Kabudachi".
A Kabudachi, Clump Style, or Multi-Trunk Bonsai is created when multiple trees are planted close together in a pot until they fuse together at the base, becoming one tree. The term "Kabudachi" specifically denotes a planting with five or more trunks. There are distinctions such as "Sokan" for those with two trunks and "Sankan" for those with three trunks in a planting.
Traditionally, odd numbers of trees are favoured for their natural asymmetry and visual interest; however, do not let this tradition limit your creativity! Even numbers of trees can also look great.
In this video, I am using Japanese Maple seedlings to create this clump style. I cover the various Bonsai tools and wire used to create a clump style, as well as the techniques that can be implemented for a more pleasing overall aesthetic and to get the seedlings to fuse efficiently and safely, without the risk of any wire scars at the bottom. The method I am showing you is what has always worked for me and I believe is the easiest and best way for beginners!

@@notionbonsai yes sir I did I will be doing an update video when I get my new shipment of starter Kishu material from Bonsaify. It’s started to leaf of the other day and hope it takes. I have an area behind a shed that has probably 50+ seedlings that just keep popping up. Thanks for the response Adam. You and Nigel are the reason I decided to document my bonsai journey on KZfaq.

I wonder if it could be as good to use a "regular" plant pot the very first stage? I am also thinking from the perspective of beginners that could benefit of not having to buy a bonsai pot straight away or don't have the drill to make DIY. I imagine it would not be detrimental in the most early development? Thanks for an informative video as usual.

Hey! I hope you have success in yours! Because I use soil with so much drainage, I water all my trees every day. You never want the soil to fully dry out, or be sitting in water / flooded where the water will stagnate and rot the roots. It is a balance 🙂 I hope this helps!

It sure does! As long as the pot is dry when sticking it, it stays on no problem! Though you might need to go hunting for it in the soil when you repot a year later!
