The 5 Watt resistor needs to be raised off the PCB to aid in heat dissipation. The PCB mounted 90 degrees counter clockwise from the current position would also aid in cooling. This would get the heat sinks and power resistor into a direct airflow generated by the fan. The transformer will act as a guide for the air over these parts.

That's a linear power supply design (You can easily determine that by the lack of inductors), which means the main power mosfet needs a massive heatsink. With the one it has currently, I wouldn't be surprised if it starts a fire. For example: With 24V input, and 5V output it needs to drop 19V, at 3A load that is 57W to dissipate in that tiny heatsink. Also, the fan header you've used for the case fan is intended to be used for the power mosfet heatsink.

That tiny heatsink cannot dissipate 50+watts of power in your case. I would suggest moving that transistor from the PCB to a heatsink and attach it to the fan at the back of the case.

Guys, i'm reading comments and can't believe what I see. Three categories of people here, the ones that know their stuff, the ones that ask for schematics and the ones that ask for parts list. For the latter two I'd suggest check the description, the man was kind enough to share links to the where to buy the parts and SHOWED you how to put it together. And it's a kit, no schematics. What more do you need????

Use a dual secondary transformer of 0-12v 0-12v, & add switch in secondary circuit so you can select between 0-15v & 15-30v.

Nice quick project. But I'd suggest you move that transistor off the board on a bigger heatsink, as well as ground the transformer chassis and get some 10 turn pots for precision adjustment. I built an adjustable PSU from scratch with LM317 and 2N3055, them transistors, I can heat up my lab...

Nice, but I didn't see a mains fuse - perhaps there's one in the switched IEC socket? Also, no output fuse - you're trusting the current limiting on the PCB? And no earth (ground)! Okay, so you don't strictly need one for safety since the case can be classed as reinforced insulation, but the transformer core should be earthed and the output should have the option of being earthed.
@killerdalek
@killerdalek 6 жыл бұрын
The mains fuse goes between the 'Live' pin of the IEC socket and the transformer. (Both Live and Neutral are fused in medical equipment.) The 'Earth' (or 'Ground') pin of the IEC socket should be wired to the transformer core, typically using a ring-crimp connector retained by one of the bolts, and don't forget to use a grab-washer.

Nice job. Ordered the kit (PCB and on-board components); just need to source a few of the external components (fused IEC socket, transformer, volt/amp meter, etc.). As far as the fan goes: Can you see any problem using two 12V fans wired in series for a 24V load? Assuming they have the same specs, the only trade-offs I can imagine are increased noise and the necessity of building a larger case, neither of which concerns me too greatly. My junk box has plenty of salvaged computer fans, so to my mind it makes sense to use them rather than buying a new one.

Well, I've just worked out that the parts list alone comes to over £50, not including the solder and wire, and since you can buy a ready-built 0-30v 2A power supply from China, probably of the same quality, then there's no point in building this . .unless you enjoy building things!

Quick question about the transformer. The specs are 80W AC 220V to 24V. Will this work with 110V power from the outlet or do I need to find a 80W AC 110V to 24V transformer? And yes, I am new to this. Trying to get into the electronics as a hobby and I need a power supply.

Not for this module, since it requires AC input. Also, I wouldn't recommend building it anyway since it is a linear design and needs a MUCH larger heatsink on the main power mosfet to not start a fire.
