How to Make a Deer Skull Mask perfect for a Skullie, Fursuit, Druid, Wendigo or Ritual Masquerade. In this video I go over all of the steps it takes to fabricate your own foam deer skull mask using eva foam and foam clay. There are also free pdf patterns available over on my website that you can download and build right along with me. This is the kind of project you can make right before Halloween for a party or masquerade. But you can also take your time and really distress the foam and foam clay to look like bone or flesh! I also show how to hand paint the mask using acrylics.

This looks amazingly creepy! I imagine it would look even scarier if it was made at 1.5x or 2x scale from a regular deer skull. Something like fleshy bits made of liquid latex added could really be terrifiying for halloween!

It looks great! My only critique is I would make the antlers bigger. The size of their antlers (and the number of points) is directly related to their age and size, and a deer skull that large is a big boy that’s been around a couple seasons, so it would have a pretty big rack. Especially since it has eight points on it. My suggestion is look at photos of real skulls with their antlers to get an idea of a good scale. But it still looks good, so if you don’t care much about scale then don’t worry about it, because most people wont know the difference.😄 And of course having a larger set of antlers will make it harder to get around without catching on things and other people 😅 so that’s a consideration. But I love that you made the antlers easily removable. It makes it easier to transport like you said, but you could also make different sets of antlers if you want.

i went for a more freshly-dug-out-of-the-ground look by getting strands of liquid latex between antlers and eye sockets and putting faux mud and glue in crevices, tuned out awesome!

One thing I thought of for the teeth, was adding either a single wire through the teeth which prevents them ALL from falling out or maybe a single wire through each tooth that you poke through the base of the skull (with glue) for extra support.

No reason to do that on these small teeth. Bob smith superglue hold hd-foam extremely well and once it’s Plasti dipped all of the teeth are sealed in place. The only reason I did that on chainsaw man was so I could reposition them before they were glued in place.

Awesome video! I'm not looking to make a skull but I am looking at various methods for making antlers, and this has definitely given me some new ideas to think about. I'm curious about wrapping the wire though; is that just for strength? Why not just use a thicker gauge? And did the dowels hold the antlers tight on their own, or would movement need to be a bit limited or slowed to avoid them falling out? I've used a dowel in PVC for a connector before, but I had to reinforce/tighten it with layers of tape to really make it snug. Thanks for all the info!

Thanks! No wraping the wire with foil is to bulk it out and give it a more organic base structure for the foam clay to attach to. You'd still have to do that even with a thicker guage wire. I don't have any issue with the dowels coming loose they create a snug fit.

Definitely need to try this one, looks awesome!! I've heard one person say that you can hit the foam clay with a heat gun to "lock in" the sculpt before you leave it to dry so you don't lose as much detail, have you ever tried this? Just curious if it works or causes issues.

Thank you!! A heat gun wont do much to foam clay and you run the risk of drying out the surface to quick. This can cause issues with the moisture not wicking out properly. If that happens you cant sand as deep or carve into the surface because the clay underneath is still wet.

Same, my daughter wants to be a wendigo for Halloween. We store bought the fur and outfit, but we are stuck on the mask. The masks are 70 bucks on ebay and don't look as good as this one. We may experiment with the cardboard and paper machete thing. But doubt it would do what this foam method can do

First off thanks! My foam can ship worldwide but I’m afraid the costs would be to high since my distributor is US based. Costs for shipping over here have gone up a ridiculous amount over the past several years. For overseas you might check out polyprops not quite as good as mine but better than floor mats

This video is awesome! Thank you so much for the tutorial and it’s amazing that the template is free! I just have one problem, I don’t think it’s with any of the other templates but the deer skull mask just won’t open for me. I would love to use your template for my Halloween costume but I can’t because whenever I try to open it, it says it’s crashed and there’s a problem. I don’t know if this is just for me but it would be amazing if you were able to fix this, thanks :)

How do I tell how much foam I will need for your templates? I can't tell how much I need to buy. Don't want to buy too much since I'm on a tight budget, but also don't want to run out partway through. Maybe i'm just blind/missing something 😅 Thanks, love your videos!

In almost every build video you need a shet of each size 2,4,6,10mm that is more than enough for the project with material left over. I will only state if something requires more than one sheet

Hey Steve, I'm working on this mask for MisCon and for the life of me I can't figure out how to prevent the clay foam from cracking and crumbling when it dries. Haaaaalp! I'm using the Crayola brand air dry clay.

It’s because it’s the crayola brand air dry clay. That stuff is notorious for cracking and crumbling. My Foam Clay is a completely different medium

How many foam sheets did you use of each thickness did you use and how many buckets of clay did you use? I just wanted to know before I buy them so I’m not stuck with too little or too much of anything

Unless I state otherwise the project will always require 1 sheet of each size same with the clay. You’ll still have lots left over for other projects

Just get a sheet of each size (2,6,10mm) and a tub of foam clay then you have plenty for future projects

Use whatever you’d like it’s your build. Foam is just a lot easier to work with for compound curves and smoothing out with the foam clay

@@alyssaprince5325 hobby lobby foam is some of the worst it’s a shore 60 hardness instead of 38 which makes it much more difficult to manipulate. And it’s density is more porous and dulls knives quicker. Use whatever paint and primer you can get links to what I use are in the description

This tutorial doesnt work at all, can't get the pieces to fit together properly and cant get the skull to be the right shape because it keeps widening all by itsekf

I don’t know what to tell you hundreds of others have put it together without issue and tagged me on Instagram to show me their completed projects. The type of foam you use makes a difference and you have to heat form it properly Otherwise try again

@@SKSProps I followed every step. I'm at the part where you attach the styrine and everything is off. Glue is peeling everywhere, foam isn't connecting properly and won't bend enough to connect like it does in video even with the heat gun.

@@symptomofsouls what glue are you using. Contactless cement and superglue will rip the foam before it will ever peel off if applied correctly. And if the foam isn’t bending enough you aren’t adding enough heat to form it

@@SKSProps I use super glue the foam just refuses to bend. If I apply any more heat it will melt
