The most important thing. If you don't have anything to show in a devlog you can always show your coffee machine or food preparation.

I'm humbled to be included in your B-Roll, Zayne, thank you! Being placed alongside so many luminaries has made me uncharacteristically blush. I think your points are excellent - I too hunt for new devlogs; especially those gems with 20 subs - who are people often talking into the void. My added tips are: 1. Work on your audio - you don't need an expensive mic (but it does help), just just need to follow some audacity tutorials. I follow a BBC Radio 4 style, which dear Terry Wogan once described as pretending that you're talking to your loved one on a pillow next to you. 2. Don't focus on ugly bits of your game - I'm a fine one to talk because so much of what I'm doing right now is grey on grey with a dash of grey. YT is a visual medium and if you want to engage people, they want to see pretty for at least part of the video. Do a ThinMatrix and shoot some footage of plants or a cup of tea if that helps. 3. Build your channel by commenting on other devlogs, offering feedback. They'll often click on your face and see what you've got going on. Don't be afraid to change title and thumbnail if you think of a better way of describing it. 4. Make sure you add tags. I use TubeBuddy (free plugin) to suggest some for me. I hope those help your viewers, Zayne!

Still can’t believe you’re including me amongst those heavy hitting talented gems 🤯 ❤️ Some incredibly useful points on content!!! I think the “value” one is probably one of the hardest to nail down without going the tutorial route, yet it really is absolutely crucial! May it be informative or entertaining or heartwarming… always thinking about “why people should watch your devlog” is a good trick 👍 Side note: please please please don’t be lazy on audio quality! It’s easy to forget a lesser edit/visual quality than it is to ignore a crackling, hard to hear, distorted voice. 😫

This is great stuff. It's funny that I've probably watched everyone on your list and I wouldn't have explicitly said I watch devlogs until it was laid out before me. I think the point about showcasing the process and approach versus the actual stuff you're typing into the editor being important, really stood out for me. It's probably my entire draw to these style of videos. I really just enjoy seeing people making things, whatever or however. I've actually been trying to puzzle out a way to apply that approach to some of my own projects that I enjoy and spend time on but eventually just end up in a folder on a drive and not much else. Maybe these ideas will get me a step closer, Thanks!

All devlogs, by law, have to start with stock footage of somewhere scenic. Then we move to a closeup shot of watering a succulent bought from Ikea. We proceed to watch a kettle boil, before viewing that same hot water being poured into a cup. Now final shot of the new Ikea desk, that houses two comically big monitors. Anything that moves away from this style of video, should be reported to the devlog police.

if i made a devlog it would have to be a parody of one of those. it would show me waking up at 2pm broke and slightly hung-over, doing my healthy morning jog from my bed to the bathroom before making a nice homecooked meal consisting of instant noodles and Egg. i would pan the camera over the construction site outside my window as i water my (clearly plastic) plants, before finally sitting down to start working on my game

This is almost unbelievable! I'm starting a development channel this week based mostly on the technical side of things, like how to structure a project, create generic reusable systems, and other things about development as I'm much more of a programmer than a designer. I'll be doing devlogs about the game I'm making (A competitive team tower defense game) and doing tutorials on how to implement the features I make. I was looking for information on how to make these types of videos since I do not know about creating content, and your video appears as if by some miracle, explaining how to make devlogs. Thank you so much for your video! It will help me a lot to create mine!

Also yeah I have a very unique style of Devlog where I up front talk about the why. Then show me doing some work for most of the video or if I'm just talking about an milestone go back and show how to do it... And do it live or in 1 take with out editing as I am primarly a live comntary gaming youtuber. And if I could read scipts I would write them like my books... naturally... that means Um and ands included. Not like I can change my voice that some people can't stand. Another thing my KZfaq personallity is my personallity and that is what most veiwers want their KZfaqr to be unless they are a Vtuber ofcourse. Great tips though for those new to KZfaq!

I've been working on a game for a little over a year now (brick breaker, first project), and I really want to start doing a devlog series on it. I was just wondering what would be the best way of going about this? I just don't know where to start because I'm already a year in. Do I just make a recap video and then start treating it like a normal devlog series, or something else?
@Samwow

First episode could just be an overview of the projects development, future videos could cover things your currently working on. Recap could be brief or long, your choice at the end of the day. Best of luck with your project!

@@LTGD I think it could help me get more people on my Discord server, which I also made for the game (its got 1 person posting once in a while right now). I wanted to use the server as a place to coordinate playtesting but that got sidetracked. Currently I am thinking about creating a video where I showcase and talk about the games I made previously, kind of like a "gamedev" journey type of video. But idk about devlogs, maybe I don't really want to commit to making devlogs constantly. I am also studying for a master degree at university so I don't have as much time to spend on my game. So yeah, I'm still a bit on the fence about the whole devlog thing.

I don't like when people have video of themselves(human form) talking in their videos and they just stare straight in the camera, it's creepy. It doesn't add anything of value, I usually assume most videos are made by humans, no need to include one in them.
