I really like to play disc golf in our local park. I wanted to see if I could make a simple disc golf basket to practice in my backyard. So I made one using simple materials from our local home center. Come see how we made it!

This would be fun to revisit as a challenge. Make a basket that: (1) conforms to PDGA specs for size. (2) costs as little as possible. Specifically the materials have to cost less than $150 because at that point you should just buy a basket. Good heavy galvanized outdoor chain is actually the biggest problem, but see requirement (4) below. (3) uses only the most common tools. Drills, circular saw, simple things that beginner home-owners would have. (4) is quiet enough to use in a suburban neighborhood. This would actually help with requirement (2) since it means chain would pretty much be out due to the noise. I'm not saying I know what the substitute would be. Maybe rope? Overall, the point would be to make something that is more accessible, more affordable, and more practical for the masses. Cheers to you, and thanks for making a disc golf related video at all lol!

Instead of making the rings, ive seen people use old bicyle tires and connect the chain to the spokes. Works good that way too

6:32 "Ideally you'd use one long piece of stock but I didn't have any that were long enough." I think there's so much to be learned by working with what you have on hand. It forces you to solve problems and think differently about a project than if you had exactly the right thing for the thing every time. Of course there's something to be said for engineering the best, most polished final product possible but one of the biggest reasons every one of your videos is a "can't miss" for me is the way you dive into a project and find creative ways to get the job done. Thanks for all the quality work and all the learning opportunities you've created!

When bending the top loop, it isn't a good idea to drill the holes for the quick links BEFORE bending putting it through the ring roller. If you drill the holes first you will end up with a kink, at every hole, where the metal bends slightly further then the rest of the ring. This is because the steel has been weakened by the hole. Even once it's been bent, the hoop will still fit in a drill press, either around the drill part or hanging down from the table. Definitely something I need to make 🙂👍👍👍👍

Several of my friends made one a while ago. We used bicycle rims for the two circular bits, made the basket out of a heavy chicken wire, and anchored the fence post in an old car wheel. Worked out pretty well! The chains ended up being the most expensive part, by far. Love the project ILTMS!

I've never heard of this game, but now I want one of these for the kids in the back garden. Bob, I want to thank you for this channel - a couple of weeks ago, I embarkedmy first build-from-scratch project, and the inspiration and techniques from your videos was a massive help. I build two benches for the back of a van that extend out to form a bed-frame. For two-days' work, and less thatn £100 worth of materials, we all slept soundly on an extended-family trip this weekend. Prior to this, my woorkworking experience was largely limited to flat-pack furniture and laying (poorly) laminate flooring.

An idea to do away with the hose clamps: You could try to make small circles that hug the center post. The small circles would be at the center of the bigger circles, connected by the metal rods. The bottom assembly would slide down the post and sit on another circle (or something) that has been welded to the post. The top assembly could be integrated into the post cap, so the cap doubles as the stop for the top assembly.

There is something to learn from all of your videos of course! Today, the lesson was not only the importance in order of operations but also that it's sometimes okay if you leave a step until later by mistake, even if it's a little more challenging. Thank you for including that lesson on drilling the holes into the ring in the final video.

You should clean your metal (de-grease it) before welding it to reduce those violent sparks and just for safety so it doesn't catch on fire. This is a cool build using common materials in alternate ways for what they are intended for!

I've though about making a basket for years, but after pricing out all metal materials I found it would be nearly as expensive or even more than just buying one. Of course, I realize the point of this channel is to make stuff and if you have access to any or some of these materials for cheap or free then it would be fun and make alot of sense. But chain is EXPENSIVE!!! HAHA! would love to know if it really was actually cheaper than a comparable basket online to buy. Thanks for the video! Learned a lot and hadn't thought of using hose clamps! What a great cheap and easy idea! Going to make my top and bottom basket out of ply wood because I have a bunch of left over pieces. :)

Interesting project! I also had a suggestion regarding the basement. Instead of going for 4 legs you can use 3 legs to avoid issues on uneven surfaces. This way even if it’s not 100% perpendicular to the ground will still hold firmly.

Might be cool to throw a wing nut hose clamp around the feet at the base of the center post. Then if you needed to set feet at different heights you could easily clamp them into place. Great video guys!

Maybe instead of the hose clamps to hold the top and bottom you can weld some tubing to the post so the basket and top just slide right in.

Very cool indeed. My first thought was to weld some tubes on the center pipe that you could slide the cage pins into. Might give you a little cleaner look than the hose clamps yet still make it easy to break down for storage. Great project!

nicely done, excellent build. one thing I would think about adding is getting rid of the hose clamps and welding on the center post on the north, south, east, and west side, a 4" piece of tube stock, then you can just raise up on the basket and chain bar to disassemble. Best example I can give is something like a fake Christmas tree, how the branches attach.

An old patio umbrella stand works well for a base too. Also, you can make the top and bottom of the basket out of old bike wheels too. Bike shops often have a few dinged up used rims in the back waiting to get thrown out, and sometimes will give you a set if you ask nicely and tell them its for diy tomfoolery 😁
