Really it stands for Fan-Magazine. They were published on cheap paper, xeroxed, and distributed to dedicated fans of a certain band or subject. Blogs replaced fanzines, but the spirit was that anyone could do it, you just xeroxed and stapled them together and there were hundreds of them depending on the band. The fun part was seeing the creativity and resourcefulness of each zine.

The first zine I ever received was in 1989 when I was in kindergarten, and we were partnered with a “grown up” 3rd grader. My partner created a zine for me, with a short story about a hero earthworm named “Wormy” and I still have it to this day.

I love your creativity. And, oh as a former cut and paste artist creating ads and specking type for the yellow pages, I can tell you that running the copy thru the waxer twice at 2 angles say, 10 degrees and 350 degrees, works the best for pasting up!

Did you adjust the images to allow for creep when folded? 6 pages, 110lb card stock. if the end user trims flush, the inner pages will be shorter than the outer, could put your images near or inside trim safety. 26 years of printing :) I appreciate the detail in this video.

I went through a very heavy “grunge” phase in my late late teens/early 20s (not by clothing style- I just emerged myself in late 80s/early 90s Seattle & greater PNW grunge music and culture) and was really into all the “zines” I could find from those days. That’s where I learned what a zine even was. I’m 31 now so it’s been a long time since I’ve even heard the word lol. But this video was awesome and it also brought back lots of memories.

I've been a computer nerd all my life. I'm a developer, I spend my days on computers, and I love it. Yet, the analog world is fascinating to me. Something I see from afar, I don't know much of, making it even more appealing. On top I love control over my stuff, and I hate buying new things (my computer is now 10+ years old). This fascination over the analog gained another level thanks to your videos. Thanks for the inspiration, looking forward to read the zine :)

I just finished creating two books for some research seminars in graduate school for architecture. Doing it yourself is so rewarding, for one, I did it booklet style like this and stapled, the other was printed double sided, stacked together, and bound with screw posts. Very happy with the results, this video is very timely.

I love how your Chanel has evolved to include your creative process and influences. I aspire to be as spirited man such as you. Peace and wellness to you and your family. Keep going Van. I wish my only way to reward you for my benefits was more than subscription and viewership. But alas, we operate our family of five on a budget. But you inspire me everyday to not treat our consumer goods as disposable. I also have learned from you to appreciate my wife of 22 year’s creative talent and encourage it. As well as help create a space to let her bloom. Thank you Van.

You're not ripping off Tom Sachs. 'Zines were around long before. At worst we make homages to them. In the same way I painstakingly printed out and bound scans of Ten Bullets (harvested from a collaboration site some years ago). I then used this to make my own Working to Code for my shop / studio. Is it influenced by Sachs? Yes but also by many other things. The content is original even if inspired. Regardless - looking forwarding to printing / binding yours (zines are still a thing with my [modern] kids and even my very [not] adult collaborators)...

Not sure if this next idea/thought/tip is for you Van, because you seem to make work with purpose, and all the choices are there for that purpose. But if you, or anyone else would want to do this themselves; I found it to be nice to use a heavy duty paper cutting table to cut the page ends flush. This wil work only with a max ammount of pages and the type of the paper is also a factor. I found it nice to do that.

The music is a great throwback to industrial videos from years back, school films/film strips, Eames etc. As soon as any of this music drops in Van's videos it takes me right back to be a kid and watching weird science film strips at school, random stuff they would broadcast on PBS etc. It's such a throwback to very specific things and times.
