Doggie wheelchairs cost around $200. You can make your own for $25 or less. I don't have a need for one, but I have had several requests for this project, and had most of the parts laying around the shop.

@@matsem4200 hi Mat, we never did. Things got so crazy after my dog's surgery we just used towels and a padded strap to support him until he regained his strength to walk on his own...took about 3 weeks before he could move by himself but he's such a fighter! 😢Coincidentally we were just talking about this video because he's older now and starting to have a hard time walking again. As recommended by the OP, we will use 1 inch pipe when we build it. I hope that you can get this done for your dog and that it helps. Please don't hesitate to reply back as I'm curious as to how it turns out. 🙏🏼🤞🏼

This seems awesome! I have an 11 yr old 85 lb make boxer. I see you say to use thicker pvc, but what about the length of the pieces (you used 5.5") what should I use for a boxer? Are there any videos of a dog using one of your chairs?
@HowToLou3 жыл бұрын
My dog is about 20 pounds. I would maybe move up to 1.5 inch PVC for an 85 pound dog. You will have to measure your dog to figure out exact sizes, but you might be looking at around 12 inch pipes for a 24 inch tall dog.

That looks pretty straightforward. Only question,what sort of collar or harness should i use? We have an old 11lb long hair Chihuahua.
@HowToLou7 жыл бұрын
+Jack Clarke - you don't need much. I would just connect a small length of rope or chain from each of the arms that stick forward, to a regular dog collar. The majority of the weight is on the back wheels. These front arms are mainly for steering.
@johnclarke28147 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, I was concerned that I might hang the dog with just a collar. Thanks

I can’t find any videos of dogs using a wheelchair with a seat. Usually the legs are dangling in a harness. Is there a reason for this? Has anyone made this and had their dog use it successfully? I wonder if they would slip off the seat. Thank you for any feedback on this.

Since your dog doesn't need a wheelchair, have you seen a dog use this design? Do they have any trouble staying in it? Do they need a belt or harness of some kind to stay on the seat part? I've seen in most of the "real" wheelchairs they have stirrups for their legs that would seem to hold them in but your design looks a lot easier.
@HowToLou8 жыл бұрын
+B Bowen - I made this video because someone requested it. I did not get to test it. If you attach the front parts to the dog's collar, it should stay under his back legs as he walks with his front legs.
@2pughugs8 жыл бұрын

+fuhqtoo - Yes, just use 1-inch or 1.5 inch PVC. The construction would be exactly the same, just bigger. You could use lawn chair strapping for the seat. You cay buy it by the roll.

Does your dog use this to go to the bathroom? That's what I need it for, but wasn't sure a dog would pee sitting down..? We're actually in the middle of making the chair now & that question just hit me..
@HowToLou Жыл бұрын
I designed and built this wheelchair at the request of one of my subscribers. My dog doesn’t actually need it. Instead of a duct tape seat, maybe you could use fiberglass window screen. Use thin wire or strong nylon thread to stitch it onto the frame. The dog could pee through it with minimal mess. Rinse occasionally to clean.

Hi there! Is there a way I can make a wheel chair for my dog for one side only? Her front right leg and back right is limp due to paralysis?
@HowToLou4 жыл бұрын
That is going to be tougher. I would suggest getting a used baby walker. Remove the tray, seat back, and seat hammock. Sew and install a new hammock with four leg holes. Hopefully your dog can learn to push around with two legs. You might want to look into using a doggie coat as a base for the hammock. Good luck.

How would you make this according to your dog measurements…. I have a very big dog?
@HowToLou2 жыл бұрын
Measure your dog from collar to base of tail (not tip) and make your long pipes about half this length. A larger dog will need larger pipes. Maybe 1.5 inch pvc pipe for a large dog. The best is 3M 3939 Duct Tape. No stairs with this. You would need a ramp.

Could this be adapted to work for a cat?
@HowToLou9 жыл бұрын
tristen pascual - It could "physically" work for a cat with no adapting. The problem is that cats are mentally much different than dogs. They tend to freak out when they feel constrained. This is why you rarely see a cat on a leash. If your cat is really REALLY mellow, you MIGHT be able to make this work for them. It is really cheap to buy the parts and build it, so it might be worth a try, but just realize it is a "try" and it might not work. I hope it does. Good luck. -Lou

Joa_Milena212 - Sure, just use 1.5 inch PVC piping, instead of the 0.5 inch that I used. You would also have to replace the duct tape with a stronger base. You could buy a small peice of canvas, wrap it around the tubes, and screw it to the pipes, from the underside.
