I just built this out of pine in a weekend and I would recommend one change. The overall size is a little snug for a full grown adult male. id recommend making it 6 in longer, giving each seat 3 inches of width. I'd also go 3 more inches taller on the back rest and 3 more inches in over all depth, (i like to slouch). And since I used pine I prestained all the wood with Olympic deck stain before i made any cuts which went pretty quick.

Going to be giving this a shot in the next couple of weeks. This will be my most ambitious project to date. I was wanting to build it earlier in the year but lumber prices made it a prohibitive

I just had to watch, not because I wanted tonlearn how to build outdoor wooden furniture, but to bring back some memories. I am 51 now, and back when I was between 19, 23 I worked in a wood shop building outdoorcwooden furniture. We built the same project as you were working on We called it a Set-tea. of course we had our own design , and other types of furniture. I made a very good living doing it. I am also considering doing it again. Thank you , you were an inspuration to me.

I think a center support would be a good idea too. (My wife and I are little on the larger size). Also, maybe adjust the dimensions for a deeper seat both bottom and back to accommodate a cushion of choice. Otherwise, I love it! It's a great design and I hope to build one soon! Cheers from Chattanooga, TN!

Great project, and easy to build. A couple of hints for the "less practiced" (like me): Be sure to think about the finished side of your lumber when making your cuts. I used cedar which had a rough side and a smooth side. To remain consistent, one set of chair support pieces need to be reversed in that situation. It's also helpful to do an initial sanding of the lumber before putting it together. Finally, instead of rounding off the back supports at the top, I cut a cap piece for both chairs out of 1x6 and then ripped it to fit. It gave it a nice finished look. Thanks for putting this out there for all of us to enjoy!

+DIY PETE had a go this afternoon, it's not perfect but that's part of its charm. Ended up having to use Australian treated pine, which doesn't come in the exact widths as your plans (or at least the store I went to didn't). It still looks great though. Huge thanks from a true beginner!

Great project. I plan to build this. However, if you build this with cedar and it will be outside you want to either glue or use stainless steel hardware because cedar expands and contracts with temperature changes and deck screws will work loss. Thanks for posting.

I just want to thank you for the plans on this bench. I'm almost finish with the bench and I just need to add the last few wood planks. After sitting in the bench, I would suggest two areas I would change. One change would be putting the top brace that holds the legs together on the outside. The other change would be to make the seats 20 inches apart to give yourself more room. The 16 inch spacing seem to be a little too cramped

Hey Jeremy! If the furniture is going under a porch it does fine --- but the sun and rain will take a toll on it if outside all the time. You can sand and re-seal when needed. But you can tell the spots where it has been worn away and sometimes it will gray a bit in those spots. I've been using deck stain on my furniture now and it has been what I've moved towards recommending. I don't have the clear finish that I love -- but re-staining it makes it look brand new and it seems to do a better job outside withstanding the elements. Hi! Thanks so much for watching. To be honest, I'd use a deck stain on the deck ( something either semi-transparent or transparent ) - and probably the same on the chair. I've moved away a bit from the Helmsman spar varnish because if you don't stay on top of it the wood can gray and it's hard to make it look nice again with another coat. While with a deck stain it is much easier in my experience to simply add a coat or two every few years. Cheers!

Hi Pete, i have viewed your video & read a few hundred comments but I can't seem to find one thing. I am sure I missed it but how long is the 2 by 6? and how long is the bench when completed? This is my first of many projects I will be doing since retirement. Very impressed with your knowledge of wood working.

Hi Kimberly! The 2x6 is 61 inches long --- and the overall width with the armrests is about 66 inches. The link to the plans can be found on my site: www.diypete.com/how-to-build-a-double-chair-bench-with-table-free-plans/ -- enter a " 0 " to get them for free :) Cheers!

Built this last weekend and love it. By need to make one a little taller. Can I just make the legs longer and keep the same angles? Any help would be great! Thanks!!

Thank you for this! I’m a neewbie from Sweden ! I’m starting to learn by doing these diy projects and i’m slowly getting there. It’s a bit confusing for me since i have to learn the metric or use a inch to mm converter. I’m almost done with the cutting now, the only thing i don’t understand is the 15 angle cut. Should the piece be 24 5/16 where i make the cut? Or at the edge? I hope you see this soon! Thanks again! / Charlie

Great to hear from you Charlie and I hope you are doing well over in Sweden! The cut should measure 24 5/16 from the short point to the long point. Best of luck!

I have some wood I would mill: are your specs for store bought nominal dimensions or actual size dimensions? Great video. Thanks.
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony! The store bought wood I refer to as 2x4 / 2x6 etc --- they are actually 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 or 1 1/1 x 5 1/2". So you'd want to mill them down to the smaller dimensions if that makes sense. Cheers!

Great tutorial but one important thing was missing - making sure your frame is square & level. I built one using the precise measurements but my structure was noticably out of square after attaching the rear support and the chair back supports.

Hey Pete if I want to make a children's sized bench would it work if I just used the same plans but just took like 4 in off each cut??

+John Kalends Hi John, you can certainly scale it down to work for kids. You could shorten the legs, cut the slats shorter to make the width smaller, and use 1 or so less horizontal slats for the seat and back rest. You'll need to experiment a bit to get what your are looking for. But it's not too hard to do. Cheers
