I've been finding feathers for more than a year now. Went walking on a trail and found a Huge Black Feather, probably from a hawk. I see them almost every day. Good timing - I just bought a book on handwriting/calligraphy last week. I liked to do calligraphy when I was a child, but as I got older it morphed into fancier handwriting with a regular pen. I was amazed at how much writing you could do without re-dipping.

Wow this is very nice, I has some poultry laying hens so I’ll try one of there’s out before getting better feathers from nicer birds , ie turkey or pheasant . Great job with that quill.👍

I made one at home, but when I try to use it there is just a drop of ink forming at the tip and it instantly slides off as soon as the quill touches the paper. Is there some way to correct that ?

No, just no. The first thing you want to do is snip off the end of the shaft, and then soak the bottom three inches of so in water overnight. This makes precise cuts much easier. Then you remove the membran from the inside and outside of the shaft. You do NOT push it in. The entire point of removing it is to stop tiny pieces from falling into the ink, which can ruin a bottle on ink quickly. Then you make the cuts. Trying to harden the shaft with a small flame is silly. The proper way is to use hot sand inside and out. Any child can make a pointy object that will write after a fashion, but if you want to make a real, precise writing instrument, you have to do certain things, and do them right. This is NOT how you make a quill, it's how you make a pointy stick.

I’m like the other commenter. I was looking for a tutorial on how to make a quill pen. When I saw you I thought, yep, that’s the guy who knows how! Then you started writing. Knows just how to make it, using it, not so much. You need to work on your calligraphy. You REALLY need to work on your spacing! This penis cool! 🤣🤣🤣
