I really like the close up on how to make the mitered corners. I would be inclined to press the corners before the stitch in the ditch to help keep them in place. I appreciated all the details in this video. Never too old to learn something new. And such lovely project. I think I'm going to get a head start on gifts. There are so many occasions where these would be perfect.

When I made my first round pot holder watching your channel, we stitched down each row. I discovered it was easier to fo it the way you showed here. I glued each row and then just stitched across all the way across all the way across. There was so much less bulk from the thread! Just like you did on this I one! I love these pot holders and today I'm going to make the square one in your video. I love the pocket technique for the binding & use it in my quilts, also! Thank you for such easy to folliw videos. So.... I just made my first square hot pad. This is what I learned. You must be extremely precise both in cutting and especially in folding and ironing. The starch is essential. Use only enough glue, not too much. It’s messy and it soaks through to the appliqué sheet and makes your pad damp. Take your time lining things up-mine ended up a little wonky-but hey first attempt. For quilting I used the erasable pen so I had lines to follow-I’m not as seasoned a quilter as Jen. Remember to use one thread for bobbin thread and another for top stitching if your fabrics are different. I goofed on that big time. All together it was a really fun project and I’m off to make my second third fourth.....❤️

the best video i've found for showing how to make these. I do have one question: Does the poly thread melt when using the hot pads on a hot handle of a pot?
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 2 жыл бұрын
We have subjected our hot pads to various heat tests without experiencing negative consequences. More likely, the fabric will burn before the thread does. Please note that we have not used these for a "fresh off the stove hot iron skillet". Hope this makes sense!! -Michelle

Thanks for the video. I recently bought the pattern but was a little confused on how to make it. Your video made everything so much clearer. Everything came out good except for my binding. My stitching didn't always catch the back binding. Any tips on how to be sure you catch the back when sewing in the ditch from the front?

Use 100% cotton thread for hot pads as polyester melts at higher temperatures. 100% cotton may scorch, but it won’t melt on your cabinets, pots, pans or bakeware. Ask me how I know this. Yeah, a cast iron skillet and 2 loaf pans ruined by using poly thread. Along with a section of cabinet. I used the pot holders on the cabinet & set the hot bread pans on the hot pads to cool for a minute. The skillet, I was taking it off the burner and the handle was hot enough to melt the thread while I was holding the skillet. You can bet I set it down fast. Only minor burns that I treated at home. Please learn from my experience and don’t use anything made of polyester in the kitchen.

I very been working on one from yesterday, and finally finished it today it was a tough one. It was brutal on my machine. I dont know what I did to make it so thick. I used a jeans needle too. I ended up having to hand sew the binding on the back. I also used a walking foot to help, widened the stitch and went very slow. The first one I made went great.

Thanks for such a great video! I'm anxious to make my first ones. How does the mono poly thread hold up with the high heat in the pot holder version of the folded star?
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 6 ай бұрын
This is a great tutorial! Happy that you liked it! For the monopoly, we have tested these and the monopoly seems to hold up just fine. Heat-wise, your fabric would most likely burn before the monopoly melts, so we would not recommend putting a “fresh from the oven” cast iron skillet on these, but they do work well as pot holders and hot pads. Hope this helps! - Abby

Hi I really enjoyed this tutorial/video. I have an order ready to go to get the kit and instructions. It looks like so much fun to do. I have another question. I was watching your video/tutorial on making the no sew styrafoam ball ornaments. Amazing as well. I can't find the 3" balls in my area. You are using the 2.5 strips does this affect my placement on the ornament if I am using either the 4" or the 2" ball. Thank you in advance.
@ShabbyFabrics

I believe that it would throw off the sizing a little bit on the styrofoam balls. However, you may find 3" styrofoam balls on Amazon for about $8.00.
