I think your best bet is to use a Radne Raket 120cc aero. It's tried and tested and I've been using my first one for about 5 years with no major problems. You'll need a 3:1 reduction to reduce the rpms to about 3000 so you don't spin the prop too fast. There are other rc plane motors that will work, but the Radne Raket is the most reliable and used. It also only weighs 15lbs.

No, I know that, but electric engine companies use the cc rating to let the consumer know that the motor is equivalent to a gas engine in terms of power.

there's a 1000ft cliff nearby where I live and it has lots of wind! So, just a wing would be fine. I don't think I'll be needing an motor and all.

For a 56 inch prop you'll need about 3000 rpms. My engine spins at 9800 rpms and I use a 3:1 reduction to get to 3000 rpms.

Weight is about 55-60 pounds depending on fuel. Handling is about the same, just make sure weight shift is parallel to the keel. Don't drop your hips and feet to one side like traditional weight shift. I'm planning on making a tandem version that has a support running to the keel and mounted just in front of the engine so I can make a prone take off.

I flew mine a couple of years back. I built the powered harness, but I flew it with a Wills Wing Falcon 2.

@McCrunluath The prop is bolted in at one end of the prop shaft and the cog wheel is bolted at the other. The bearings are sandwitched between the two. The prop and cog wheel keep the bearings from moving along the prop shaft.
@McCrunluath
@McCrunluath 13 жыл бұрын
How did you secure the bearings in the drive shaft cover? Did you use any inner sleeving to prevent the bearings from possibly moving? Did you end up just using two bearings, one at the drive end and the other at the prop end? Thanks for taking the time to put this out there for all of us out there!
@WesAdams
@WesAdams 13 жыл бұрын
@McCrunluath No, I didn't use any loctite. The prop and cog wheel hold the bearings in place. Can't wait to see your design!

You have hell to get 7075 in England, if you go to the glider makers they rip you off about £120 for an upright. But 6065 that is just as god and some times better can be got dead easy. I had two lengths for just under £40 enought for 6 uprights. Just as well, as with the site I aI flying and the winds i fly in, I broke two last year. Still dune gooning has it price. Cheers, Pete

It turns back into a hang glider. I've ran out of fuel a couple of times, it's not a big deal as long as you have a place to land. I still have about a 10-1 glide ratio with my engine off.

Pete, I got mine from speedymetals an online metal business. They will cut and ship to the U.S. You can get 6065 and 7075 aluminum for cheap in the U.S. Wes

Anything less than 12 hp , you will have a very hard time to lift off, the first about 9 hp of that is just to bearly take u up the ground and any extra hp is what makes u go up... and if u use too powerful engine, that will not work either, since not only it will be heavy, also it will create much larger counter rotation force that will twist you to one side, Any engine between 12 and 18 hp will work, any other engine won't... The more aspect ratio wing u use to fly , it will have much better climb in higher altitudes ( not higher climb in the sea level ( the same ) but in higher altitude) The total take off weight/ aspect ratio = minimum thrust at sea level As you go higher , there is not enough air and density, so that number will drop so fast , so if you get higher aspect ratio wing , on the equation above you will have much smaller requirements for thrust and the engine will be able to create enough of that, 18 hp engine will be twice powerfull to minimum 9 hp requirements And 12 hp engine will be only 1.33 times more powerful Going from 12 hp to 18 hp is only extra 6 hp but the experience will be much different since 18 hp will be 2 times powerfull compare to 12 hp only 1.33 times ..

Hi thanks for the reply. Did you use any loctite to hold the bearings in place, or are they just pressed into the housing? Thanks again. I'll be sure to put up a video of my own design once I get it going.

200 for the aluminum, 200 for the reduction gears, 1000 for the engine, about 400 for the prop.

Cuánto es el precio que vale el motor?
@WesAdams
@WesAdams 11 жыл бұрын
Yep, probably too powerful and too heavy unless you're using or have a glider about the size of a tandem. For the 52 inch prop used on most powered hang gliders you want to get about 3000-3200 rpm at the prop depending on the type of prop. My harness weighs about 55-60 pounds depending on how much fuel. My max hook in weight for my Falcon 195 is 250 lbs. I weigh about 195 lbs so I'm right there at the limit. Some tandems can handle 400-500 lbs.

hey wes how did you make the mouth throttle and where did you get the prop extender?
@WesAdams
@WesAdams 2 жыл бұрын
For one mouth throttle I use a simple small clamp. I drilled a small hole in the end of the clamp to insert the throttle cable. I used a bolt and used my dremmel to create a channel for the throttle cable to run through. The prop extension was two pieces of angled aluminum with aluminum pipe. I bought the high speed bearings first so I could make the measurements needed for the inner diameter of the aluminum pipe. I used a metal Rod that fit the inner diameter of the bearings. I used brazing rods instead of welding for the prop extension.
