just temporary lines until i redo my car again in the future............
the fuel and vapor return were both ripped out of the car when i got it........... the new lines are $200 and this should get me by for now....cost for both lines was around $70

Thanks!! I used vasoline after straightening the copper tube and shoved it all the way through the plastic with out cutting. Then, I put a 5/16 brass nipple off the fill pipe, connecting the copper line to it with 6" rubber fuel hose. Your idea of the plastic protection! ☺👍👏

Hi Chris, thanks for always making great videos with tips! I have a 69 Chevelle with two vent lines on the tank. One is 5/16 & the other is 3/8 which will fit the 1/4" copper line. However, they don't make a vented gas cap for my year of Chevelle. Is it safe to just use the smaller line for the copper vapor return and leave the other line vented or should I plug the end as you did on yours? Thanks.

hey brother great how-to! I am running a 600 cfm edlebrock with a spectra electric fuel pump through a holly return style regulator on a 1985 chevy caprice with a 5.7 vortec. I have the return port capped off. I was wondering if I could use rubber fuel line for return instead of copper?

Hey Chris, thanks for posting videos... I have a 72 Chevelle SS. Currently it has a carburetor on it but I just purchased a EFI system. Can I use this procedure from your video to create a fuel return line using that vapor nipple on the gas tank?
@chriscraft77022
@chriscraft77022 7 жыл бұрын
NO, absolutley not.. you gotta get a special tank... or modify the sending unit.. that efi runs on high pressure.. this has NO pressure at all... its gonna cost you like $500 to get that fuel system done... you have to run a high pressure hose to the tank and then another high pressure line back to the tank.. its a bit complicated
@jesseparadis6141
@jesseparadis6141 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree with Chris! You can use it for efi return as efi return is not high flow or high pressure on return . Only main line has high pressure

Hey Chris i hope your not too smoked out by ITC. I have a 69 chevelle with a 454 transplant in it and have been having vapor lock issues. After some reading, a common remedy is to convert to electric fuel pump near the tank, which would aid in pre priming for easier starting as well decreasing the tendencies of vapor lock after the engine is warm. Currently i have my main line from tank running deadhead up to a (non return/bypass) holley fuel pressure regulator that is mounted to the passenger fenderwell (one inlet @ bottom, left outlet goes to fuel press. gauge, right outlet goes to carb). Im thinking of running a return line and came across many options in my research. if you reply, for simple answering, would you mind copying my 4 questions into your reply with your answers after them? 1) With your method, are you running any type of restriction orifice in the return line (ive read .060 orifice is ideal to keep consistent fuel pressure) or is it 1/4" restriction free all the way back to tank? 2) Is there anything on the other side of your tank nipple that directs the flow toward the bottom of the tank? i have read that not directing fuel to the bottom could cause agitation/splashing and build excess vapor pressure in the tank. Is this why you have a vapor releasing cap? do you have the cap part no.? delco OEM 3931449 or similar? 3) I wish i could post a hand sketch pic on here. Im thinking of putting a tee from left reg. outlet and reattaching the gauge to one side of tee and on the other side of the tee a 3/8" npt x 1/4" barb that i plan on tapping 1/4"-32 to accept a holley 112-61 jet (.060 orifice) ( www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/fuel-return-line.1124950/ post #8) and placing the hose to the tank return on that barb essentially turning a deadhead system into a bypass return assembly. 4) ive also considered placing the WIX 33041 filter with return port inline between the reg and carb. and running the return line back to a tee by tank outlet as said in post #21 (www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/fuel-return-line.1124950/) seems kinda iffy, but if it works, it works. i wouldn't mind going this filter route and connecting it to the tank vent nipple as you have, im just worried about the agitation part of it. As you can see, im kinda scattered on which way to go, return port filter? orifice restriction? running to inline tee by tank? running to tank vent?...sorry for taking up your time with this detailed write up, but you usually have a good straight up answer and asking these things could help out many others with the same questions. i would like to know if you agree all would work and what your take is.

@@chriscraft77022 well, car starts up no problem, fuel press @ 5.5 -6psig, and fuel filter (located similar to your holley carb video) between the regulator and carb is full of fuel and air bubbles. After bring to oper. temp approx 160-180deg. ill go for couple mile drive with some hard acceleration pulls in between with no problem leaving 2 black marks. There has been times that i pull up to a stop light and the car begins to sputter and run rough at idle, and doesnt clear up until i give it a bit of throttle (1500-2000 RPM) and then again seems to have noticeable performance issues and a change in exhaust sound at cruise and deceleration. Ive pulled over to pop the hood and find that the fuel filter is less than half full (fuel-in flowing to fuel out hole) , but im still showing 5.5-6psi at the regulator. im assuming its carb percolating or vapor lock. Im installing a thermal spacer this weekend in hopes that it will solve the problem, but im still thinking the return line will be worth the trouble to never have an issue again. thanks chris.

@@chriscraft77022 thanks for the quick reply, just to double check, when you say , try that vapor return "pump", did you mean filter? also, is your return line just open all the way back to the tank or does it have a restriction orifice? and does your nipple have a line down into the or is it just trickling in the nipple and down into the tank? Im thinking placing the TEE at the back between the pre-pump filter and tank is a simple way to keep from messing with the tank, and the guy seemed confident with it. In theory it works, but obviously going into the tank is the most efficient circulation route. Thanks for you answers im trying to make one oreilly trip today an knock it out this weekend. I live next to you in Beaumont/Fannett area.

in 70 big block cars with AC had a vapor return mechanical fuel pump and a 5/16th addition fuel return line next to the 3/8 steel line... this is what I first put on my car... when the gas evaporated in the lines it relieves the pressure through the return and eliminates heat soak.. the problem occurs in the fuel lines.. don’t be fooled by these videos of gas boiling when it hits the carb. They probably had the line next to the manifold... carb cars don’t vapor lock.. the ethanol evaporates faster in the steel lines

To save hassle I'd like to run my new lines over the inner fender to the mechanical fuel pump in my 73 Torino. This rout will bring them over the height of the fuel pump. and back down to it. Does that even matter? Please help.

Seeing this video for the first time on 01-11-2018. If you already have an evap. line coming up from the gas tank to a carbon canister, it seems that you could have tied into it as your return line back to the tank instead of going to the work of routing a new line.

The concept is right but you need atlease a 1" tube. it is too restrictive and you're not getting enough vapor gas going into the manifold. Have a 2004 Ford explore. I had to run two tubes in series and one ventilation tube to even get the engine to burn it.

Why a fuel vapor return line?
@chriscraft77022
@chriscraft77022 6 жыл бұрын
all the big block 70 chevelles i have seen had a factory vapor return line.. it is to prevent vapor lock or hot fuel from getting in the carb.. so if it does get hot and boil the vapors go back to the tank and not the carburetor.. they said it started happening on big block cars with air conditioning and the under hood temp would get like 400 degrees... the problem usually happens when you do burnouts for 10 minutes and then your car starts bogging or dying at a red light idling.. these lines are just temporary cause the new ones cost like $300 and you have to pull the body off the frame to install them.. which i will do in a future video
