As you know I've loved your projects...sadly the idea of reverse image/gold leaf/chip glass is becoming a lost art. 40 years ago I was involved with a 4 story mural project in the USA and the project manager had this 1927 reverse image sign from the original company that had some minor damage and wanted to know if I could fix it. The process had been done using an artist oil painting on "Gum" paper, several clear coats of varnish, wet sanded smooth and then floated on the back of the glass with a gelatin size. It was a great piece and though I know and have done that process...it was too far gone to do anything. Back in the 60's and 70's I would do pin stripes, signage and airbrush murals for Detroit auto dealerships... Here in Sydney the TAFE had some excellent sign writing teachers with "Ray Carol" (head teacher) doing amazing reverse image gold leaf signage...like you said it's becoming a lost art. Now (at my age) I do gold leaf signs for family and friends, and I have to admit seeing you put out all this free and good information warms my soul. Great work and keep it up...Ken

Thanks Ken that really means a lot, especially coming from someone who’s worked in the trade for so long. I’m still learning as I go and I’ve learned a lot since starting the channel so it’s still really good fun for me. I’m really surprised at the amount of views and subscribers I’ve gained so far. Absolutely stunning work Paul. Brilliant. Literally and figuratively. You’ve the patience of a saint. All the weeding vinyl, edging, scoring! I had to watch with a notebook at my side to catch all the great tips you offered. I really appreciate that you don’t edit out “mistakes” and such because it shows those of us without your experience that there are times that we’ll need to make a correction or two (and how to fix it). Oh man, thanks a BUNCH for this great video! I remember the first time I saw gilded glass and I had some spare gold leaf laying around. I just HAD to try it since gelatin is so cheap I just thought YES, I'm gonna try it. So I warmed some water and dissolved some gelatin in it. Found my best brush and just went with it, working on a masons jar. So I put on the gilding water and applied the gold leaf. And I just sat there. (It was summer so it went on pret-ty fast. But 5-6 minutes passed and all of the sudden it started making that mirror shine finish. I've bin hooked ever since. It such a (hard) ultra special medium to work with. And the satisfaction of actually just sitting there, staring at a masons jar was all it took for me. Especially afterward, I think maybe two hours passed so it could heal better and doing the last polishing finish with an ultra, Ultra fine haired brush I actually made it. It's.. 'scuse me pun here but, it was pure gold! And so again thank you so much for this video! It really helps the mind to skip over so many mistakes, having to jump on the subject without ANY knowledge of it, this video is just, well, gilded beyond compare! Thank you happy gilder! ONE favor though, for us all I believe. When you make videos (and thanks for that). But please adjust the volume of the clips. Because when you first scroll on to the computer program and then come back YOU VOICE IS LIKE THIS! You almost gave me a heart attack. Just an advice. Other than that, thanks a million for this video! It teaches a Lot!

For heating your glue in cases like this you could use a Sous Vide cooker. You can keep something at 45c (113f) for an hour at +/- 1c with no problem at all. It's also great for tempering chocolate since it does control low temps with great precision,
@happygilder2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip Kevin! I've never used a Sous Vide but I'd worry that the steam would prevent the glue from setting. Does the steam come out or is it contained within the cooker?
@scaletownmodels2 жыл бұрын
@@happygilder Generally there really isn't steam as much as just water vapor as you're not using it near the boiling point. More to your point, you seal your material (food or whatever you're heating) in a plastic bag so there is no transfer of water vapor between the water bath and the contents. Whether you use a ziplock or heat seal (often food is vacuum packed and heat sealed). Mainly it's down to a very even, steady and precisely controlled heat because the water volume has a lot of thermo buffer. Just make sure to dry the outside of the bag before opening. It's also great for steak or fish as you just can't overcook unless you set the temp wrong. Set it for 155f put the steak in for four hours and it will never have gone over 155.

hello Paul, at minute 58 when you burnish the gold leaf, why does the gold leaf only come off where you want
@happygilder4 ай бұрын
It doesn’t. Burnishing only removes loose bits of leaf so that all you’re left with is the leaf that’s fully adhered to the glass. It’s essential that you do this after the first coat so that the second layer of gold adheres properly

at 15:32 what is the green vinyl under the black vinyl?
@happygilder11 ай бұрын
That’s just the back of the mirror. The backing paint is green :)

May i know how much heat range have for complete glue chip for example 110 °F or 125 °F .What amount of heat is best for finish this system?
@happygilder3 жыл бұрын
@@tinkokowin7143 sorry I don’t know what temperature it is, but I’ve seen people do it with a light box and the heat from the bulbs is enough to make it chip

@@happygilder i really enjoyed the video, it would be great if you could create a video that goes a little more in depth about materials.... Your vinyl thickness n type, type of paint, what grit you use for sand blasting n settings.... I'm a nerd like that. I just found your video but that sounds like an affliate link opportunity 😆

@@deannak1841 thanks, I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I think I’ve covered all of that stuff, but unfortunately it’s in different videos. I tried to make this one have everything you’d need, but I must have forgotten a few. Hi I'm Bob Gamache a fellow gilder. What is the green material you applied to the glass?
@happygilder Жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, it’s good to hear from you! The green is mirror backing paint. This started as a mirror rather than a clear piece of glass

@@happygilder Thank you Brother! Hope you are well!

So in essence I should be able to take a clear piece of glass, paint it black, apply the vinyl mask over the paint & then sandblast. Do you think it will work?
@happygilder Жыл бұрын
@@bobgamache82 it would work but you don’t need to paint it. Just vinyl on glass will do it. I didn’t apply the green backing paint, it was a mirror already and I just blasted the backing pint away

...and divide it by 144. That's what it says on the Internet. I can't stop laughing. I know exactly what you mean. I get the answer or the formula front the Internet iand it works but I don't know why. This one I remember from school 1 square foot is 12 inch by 12 inch so you have to multiply the together to give you 144 square inches. Would a double boiler work well for heating the glue or my girlfriend fondue heater?
@happygilder2 жыл бұрын
Math is like a foreign language to me, so thank god the internet is there to help me when I need to do sums 😂 I’m not sure about a double boiler or a fondue heater. As long as it can heat the glass from below it should speed up the chip. Make sure the glue is hard before heating it though :)

Victorians used better microphones.
@happygilder Жыл бұрын
Having looked into this I think you're probably a few years off. Although the microphone was invented in the 1870's, the condenser microphone wasn't developed until 1916, which is 15 years after the Victorian era. Thanks for your comment though, I learned something new today :)
