No, there is zero chance of dangerous shrapnel from a small tap like this. Using a hammer like this as a drift to do something like: drive a large pin, yeah, dangerous and ill-advised. But, if you think tapping hammers like this is dangerous, I don't think you should be trusted to operate a hammer.

Tools: yes. Metal work: depends. Blacksmiths generally don't have the skills to work on car panels. Different type of metal working. I happen to have done both (although I'll be the first to admit my sheetmetal working skills are underdeveloped on account of the guys that taught me being more concerned with job protection than actual teaching), so I'm somewhat versed in both. My blacksmith friend who introduced me to knifemaking though, has absolutely zero skills when it comes to car body work. I'm sure he could learn; it's not rocket science, after all. But his blacksmithing skills are not really transferable to sheet metal work.

That's probably because they were teaching the "why" when all you need to know is the "what." (The "why" is quantifiable, which lends itself to relaying specifications for mass production at a remote location, while the "what" is a learned skill.)

@@CountPantsulon I disagree, I think we just needed the lab to take place concurrently instead of weeks later so we could observe and measure the changes in hardness, toughness, and brittle fracture characteristics to make it stick. The point of my comment was just to compliment how clearly and succinctly he explained the process of manipulating the grain structure of metal in a way that was easy to understand even with no context and without holding back technical concepts like the crystaline structre, austenite, martensite, etc.
