This method of making a bin cage has been the most effective for me. So today i'm sharing with you what tools i use and what method while also watching me go to work on an old cage. Each tool is mentioned in the video and steps are explained as i get to work. You can find these tools online or at your local hardware store.

My hamster lives in a bin cage and we orded the bin online but the lid was not strong enough for us to cut to put the mesh in so my dad made me a wooden lid with mesh over half of it and it is the most amazing cage, so easy to clean and looks rly nice (thanks dad) : ) i would really recommend bin cages bcs i know that sometimes normal cages can be quite pricey or u just cant happen to find one a suitable size so bin cages are just so affordable and they just make rly great cages. : ) : ) : )

There is more than one way to do it. A bit more of a investment buying the wood and not using the plastic lid available, but I am sure your dad did a great job...

I always cut my bins with boxcutters (carpet knives) and normal sanding paper to smooth stuff out

I cut my bin with a box cutter too and knowing my dad he broke the box cuz he started with a kitchen knife but after it worked out with the box cutter!

If you make the holes for the zip ties first then cut the space for the chicken wire theres more plastic to support the vibrations/pressure of the drill. Also placing the tub against the wall with a small chunk of wood between you and the tub it will help keep the tub in place :)

Thanks !! I’m making one soon for my hamster since she’s been staying in a habit trail for a couple weeks since we had one from when I was little and my parents refused at first letting me make a bigger cage for her, but after a lot of asking they finally said yes !

If you don't have these power tools at home, usually you can rent them from the hardware store!

Or your local tool lending library. Usually major cities have free lending libraries. BuyNothing groups, Freecycle, or sites like Craigslist, or Kijiji

There are so many ways to make bin cages. As an adult, I definitely did not use "proper" tools. Kids should always have supervision. But I made sure to be safe the way I did it. I used a box cutter to cut out the top of the bin, no it wasnt super straight of a line but I didnt care. And I actually used an old 10 gallon tank lid that had the mesh top, I cut out the entire thing and then cut it in half (kinda sorta dangerously) going back and forth between using a box cutter and some basic scissors. I wore thick working gloves that I have for doing stuff on my car and I wear prescription glasses (which isnt good but is better than none) 😂😂 but I made 2 bin cages using one mesh tank lid and 2 $15 bins that I got from Walmart with a pack of $1 zip ties from the dollar store. I am not sure of the floor space size actually for these bin cages. I'm pretty sure they arent the minimum for living space but I use them when I clean my mice cages (those are 20 gallon longs with a ten gallon tank topper stacked on the top of the mesh lid) they have lots of space to run and climb and chew and be happy. They are 2 males in SEPERATE cages. I do not house them together. Bin cages, if they are big enough can be great for living space, but also it's a nice cage for when your cleaning your pets permanent home. If you are worried about your small animal chewing through the bin, you can always get a thicker plastic bin, but there is a likely chance you wont be able to see the pet as well, or just buy a tank, at least a 20 gallon LONG not a 20 gallon high. But *bigger is always better.* Tiny cages are horrible, and well, tiny. And that's not good for your pet. Please perform proper animal husbandry or do not own pets. *Thank you for coming to my Ted talk*

Great video. Can't wait to try! Just wanted to say for your audience that it's a deburring tool, not a deblurring tool. If you google deblurring tool, you will not get the tool shown in the video. You said it right in the beginning of the video, but when describing what to do you switched. Burrs are the bumps and sharp edges. Also for people watching make sure to go in the same direction with the deburring tool to maintain smoothness just like she did. You should also really have the bin clamped down or held in place by blocks or something for safety reasons. The drill can get stuck and cause the bin, although light weight, to start spinning.

Loved the video!!! I use $3 tin snips from Walmart to cut the mesh a bit quicker... it makes the snips pretty dull though so I have to replace them every few months but I find it worth it in the end because it saves so much time! Finally I just wanted to say how smart of an idea that other tool is that you used to smooth all of the sharp edges! I will definitely be getting one of those because that is the best thing I’ve seen in a while!!

If u get a pair of tin snips they cut through the wire mesh like butter compared to the little snips. They are @ $6 at Walmart and Harbor Freight both :)

I've found that metal snips are a heck of a lot easier to use than plain old wire cutters. The pair I got from home depot was only $10. But they're like super-powered scissors that can cut through meta (wires and sheet metal).

Just wanted to add this for anybody who’s unskilled like me 🤗 what I did was I bought a cheap, thin iron barbecue grate (for $2 at Daiso, but you can definitely find it in a dollar store). I used a pocketknife to cut a hole in the bin’s lid that was smaller than the grate. I then used some super adhesive glue + tape to stick the grate onto the lid. (Stick the grate from the outside of the lid, not the inside where the hamster is) It’s not as nice as Munchie’s but it’s still functional and stays together! Btw the bbq grate I used was 30x50 cm which allows for a very fair amount of ventilation.

If u want to cut the hardwire mesh like butter try a cheap pair of bolt cutters. It glides thru it like scissors on paper :)

1/2 inch gaps of 19 gauge chicken wire mesh... 1.2 cm of 19 gauge chicken wire mesh... Measure the hole and cut the mesh a Inch or cm larger all the way around... All good carpenters measure twice, cut once....

If most of the lid is mesh, you will have sufficient circulation. But more mesh on the two side ends of the bin will provide better circulation, just be aware of any drafts in that room...

What should the smallest bin be? I have a roborovski in a CritterTrail, and I am hopefully going to be upgrading her today. My mom is getting a 28.5 gallon bin and I don't know if that is big enough or not.

28.5 is too small, the smallest size bin you should get is 105 quarts (or 40 gallon). but you have to measure the floor space and make sure it is at least 450 square inches

There are 4 quarts to a gallon, so around 40 gallons. 28.5 gallons times 4 would be 114 quarts. Sterilite sells 105 and 116 quart bins... Either should be sufficient for a Roborovski dwarf... For a Syrian I would prefer the Sterilite 200 quart bin, but they are more difficult to find in stores. Not impossible though... Without any doubt whatsoever, the nearly 30 gallon tank will be considerably better than the Critter Trail your Roborovski is living in today...

Personally I wouldn't suggest it. It doesn't hold as well and could be dangerous for your own safety.

Btw for the drill, if you want you can use a heated hot glue gun to burn holes into plastic

@@xoxoxo3044 personally I just used a heated box cutter and cut a giant hole in my bin then used like chicken wire. like this video. But I don’t think it would. Maybe the plastic fumes or something? I’d just say make the holes then wash the bin out and leave it for a day. Then put your hamster in

I prefer a 200 quart bin for a Syrian, over 600 square inches, 106 to 116 quart bins for dwarfs, over 450 square inches... A 70 to 90 quart bins are not large enough for a permanent habitat, but a 70 quart bin would make a very good travel cage to see the vet...

Gerbils are crazy! You need a glass tank. Like a 40 gallon..you can get them used for cheap like Facebook marketplace.

You might want to invest in a 40 gallon breeder tank or larger, hamsters can't chew through glass so it'll be safer in the long run for your hamster ^^

The lid is necessary if there are other animals in the house. Even a unwelcomed rat that has decided to move into your house...

The animals are in the pet room and cats aren't allowed inside. So no issues with us. However you may need to use more zip ties if you fear your cats would sit on top of the metal.

Robby Dawson if you have other animals in the house (like dogs or cats) that will brother the bin animal I would definitely get a lid. But if not, I wouldn’t bother with a lid.

No. The mesh used in today's video is what I use for all diy enclosures. Currently my foster fail mice are living inside of an 110qt bin with this mesh. They can only stick part of their snouts through, but cannot break out. The metal is thick enough not to be chewed.

Appears to be a 110 quart bin. I prefer the 200 quart bin better for Syrians, over 600 square inches, but 106, 110, and 116 quart bins will be suffiicient for a dwarf hamster, over 450 square inches. The main difference with the smaller bins is their height, the 116 quart bin is nearly 3 inches taller more suitable for a larger wheel. But their width and length at the bottom of the bin are very similar. I believe they use the same mold, they just change the height when making the bins with the same slope. The taller the bin, the top of the bin gets longer and wider...

If you can't find a smaller rolls of chicken wire cheaper, use a cheap soldering iron to punch in a lot more holes than what she had on this lid before she starting cutting with the oscillator. 3 or 4 times more. Even a row or two at the top on all 4 sides of the bin. Avoid humidity building up inside the bin with good air flow and ventilation. If you see moisture building up inside, punch or drill more holes. Using a soldering iron needs to be done outside, as the plastic lid creates some smelly flumes when heating the plastic. There is more than one way to provide good air flow through the bin....
