This is a quick video i made of my process of making a aluminum motorcycle fender by hand. Hope this helps a little for anyone who may want to try to make one !
Sorry for the 50 million times I say "um uh" in the video
I'm not use to explaining how I make things as I'm making them.

Great video. That was so helpfull . I immediately went out back with the chainsaw and cut a block dry 8 in tree trunk. Wittled botto to fit in vice outside and then cut out bowl on top. I used 4 1/2 inch sheet metal and hammered fender out after rounding out my rubber hammer. My english wheel took out the bumps. Paint covered up the rest. Very happy i found your video. I give you a handshake and a thumbs up. Made my day.

Thanks, I was talking about the curve of the fender ( trying to make it conform to the curve of the tire ) . I did hammer it some more and I see that seems to be working. Thanks for your video and thanks for getting back to me. 👍

I 3-d printed a fender with a flange on each side. I then made a thick fiberglass mold of it that I use to pound it out. It’s very simple and the form makes an identical perfect fender everytime.

Thanks alot of trial and error along the way but I think I can do these small ones fairly quick considering it's all hand done without power machines. Pullmax machine would probably cut the time in half though 😅

How do I increase the arc so it goes with the tire diameter? I rolled it then hammered it , wheeled it and it’s a bit too flat. Do I hammer it more to curve it? Then wheel it again?
@aaronrichard75
@aaronrichard75 5 жыл бұрын
You can use a shrinker on the edges to tighten the radius back up. If you are talking about the depth from side to side then yes hammer some more to make it deeper then wheel out again.

What's the regular english wheel sizes (lower and the upper) you use the most for building the fenders ??
@aaronrichard75
@aaronrichard75 4 жыл бұрын
Upper wheel is an 8" diameter wheel 2" wide. The lowers I have are your basic 4pc set you get usually when you buy the wheel. I use the 2nd to the most crown one in the set for the long vertical wheeling then I use the flattest wheel for the short horizontal wheeling if that makes sense.

Great video. You add 3/4 inch to the width do you do the same for the length?
@aaronrichard75
@aaronrichard75 3 жыл бұрын
With the length is actuallly grows so if you cut the piece to length, when your done it generally adds an inch. So as an example, if you cut a 15" piece it will be around 16"-16.5" in length when your done.

can you make a tutorial about the rear fender honda cb 125
@rogercrier
@rogercrier 4 жыл бұрын
So can this process be used to make a smaller tighter and longer mudguard for the Honda Monkey 125 that fits close to the tyre and is much longer, with a good amount of coverage sideways? It would need to fit a toroidal “Hammerform”, or inflated innertube shape, 18.5” od and 5” wide. And to get a decent coverage the flat sheet would need to be 7” wide and 23” long
@aaronrichard75
@aaronrichard75 4 жыл бұрын
Hi roger Sorry for the delayed response. I dont always catch u tube notifications. Anyway yes I think I could make a fender for that type of tire and be able to at least cover all the tread. If the fenders needs to have deep straight sides, I usually weld and blend side panels on them.
@rogercrier

I have managed to hammer a sheet of aluminium into the shape I want!! I need to plannish out the blemishes caused by “wrinkle” shrinking the edges, so some kind of wooden hammerform and millions of tiny hits with the hammer, then sanding, then polishing!

Congratulations on the video ... the best I saw with your explanations ... what is the thickness of the aluminum plate? and if it is to do with carbon steel thickness plate should you use?
@aaronrichard75
@aaronrichard75 5 жыл бұрын
Hi I use .063 For these aluminum fenders. I've used as thick as .090 depending how big and the style of fender. Steel is tougher to shape by hand. If I make fenders from steel most I could use is 18g. Anything thicker you really need power hammers to move the metal.

do you soften the alum before shaping?
@aaronrichard75
@aaronrichard75 3 жыл бұрын
Bennie, i do aneal the aluminum. If you are hand hammering it makes things easier. The aluminum work hardens back up from hammering and wheeling. I use 3003 h14 which is hardened unlike say 1100/0 pure aluminum which is not hardened. It also depends on the thickness of sheet your using and if your trying to put alot of shape into it. Do a search on anealing aluminum. Plenty of how to videos .

What thickness do you use for genders?
@aaronrichard75
@aaronrichard75 3 жыл бұрын
@@benniecantrell6901 it depends how they will be mounted and the size of the fender, Short cafe fenders usually .063 but longer wider fenders i use .080 . It also depends what customer prefers as well if their trying to keep weight down. Also say if you plan on beadrolling or putting in a wire edge , you can use the .063.
