Step 1: Create a Square Image then Save As .PNG or .JPEG
Click the Background color box then choose grey color. Choose File- New Ctrl+N to create a new document. Enter the following information: Width 400 pixels, Height 400 pixels, Resolution 300 Pixels/Inch, Color Mode RGB color, and choose Background color for the Background contents. Click OK. Choose File-Save As or Shift+Ctrl+S.
Step 2: Duplicate the square image
Duplicate the square image using Ctrl+C copy then Ctrl+V Paste. I'll duplicate it 35 times to create a 6x6 contact sheet.
Step 3: Create a Contact Sheet
I’ll create a 6x6 Contact Sheet. Choose File - Automate - Contact Sheet II. Choose your source folder your square images. Choose Width, Height, and Resolution values for the contact sheet. Choose across first and the desired number of Columns and Rows. Click OK. Please wait, while Photoshop opens each image and creates the contact sheet.
Step 4: Delete All Layer Mask
Right-click on every layer mask thumbnail then choose Delete Layer Mask. We'll be using clipping mask to insert images.
Step 5: Group Layer
While holding down the Shift key, click the first and last square layer then choose Layer-Group Layers.
Step 6: Type a Letter
Type a Letter then resize it using Free Transform Ctrl+T.
Step 7: Load Selection
Ctrl+Click on the letter layer thumbnail to Load selection.
Step 8: Create Layer Mask
Select the Group layer then create layer mask by choosing Layer-Layer Mask-Reveal Selection.
Step 9: Duplicate Group
Press Ctrl+J to duplicate the Group layer if you want to create another letter. Load Selection and create layer mask.
Step 10: Insert Image
Activate/Select the letter layer you want to insert an image. Choose File-Place to insert an image into the document then press Enter or click Commit checkmark.
Step 11: Create Clipping Mask
Create clipping mask by choosing Layer-Create Clipping Mask.
Step 12: Resize The Image
Use Free Transform Ctrl+T to align and resize the image. Press Enter when you're done.
Step 13: Insert All Images Into the Square layers
Repeat the previous steps to insert all of your images into the letter layers.
Step 14: Add Color for the Background
Select the background layer and choose Edit-Fill to fill it with a color you like.
Step 15: Save Your Document
Choose File-Save or else just press Ctrl+S to save your project file. The Save As dialog box appears. Navigate to the folder where you want to store your project file. Type a name in the File Name text box and leave the default Photoshop *.PSD;*.PDD format. PSD is Photoshop's native format and is useful because it stores everything about your image and will allow you to later edit your image in Photoshop, in case you notice a problem. Click Save to store the project file. Once you have finished, you will probably also want to export the image in a more widely used format, such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, etc.
