This is a very simple and cheap but reliable way to make your own livewell. The main component of this build was the aerator. The aerator used in this video is the Marine Metal Bubble Box Portable Air Pump, which was purchased on Amazon for $7.96. The cooler is a 48 quart cooler that was purchased at Walmart for around $15. Also two D size batteries are user to power the aerator, which cost around $4. This is a project that anyone can do in a few hours with very minimal tool. I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching.

Picked up a large cooler at my local Goodwill for $3. Found an Aquarium Air Stone (12 inch) for $0.50 cents there as well. They also had the Aquarium sealant from Loctite there for $0.50 cents. Spent $10 on the Bubble Box.... end result = kept my Rainbow Trout catches alive for 4 days on the cheap! Going Salmon and Trout Fishing next weekend. Ended up giving my neighbors TONS of trout. They just had a new kiddo too so more food for my new awesome neighbors the better :)

Note: It's easier to apply picture frame holders to your coolers if you want to swap your Bubblebox between coolers depending on the hiking / fishing trip. Keep the Bubblebox clip on there if you want to switch it out between coolers. ;)

I used a similar cooler ran the wiring and air hose out of the drain plug sealed it with silicone glue. Inside is a small bilge pump to easily drain and refill for fresh water, a small led light, and the air bubbler. Everything is on a separate switch that runs to my boats battery I used a tow strap to keep it in place and a rubber latch to keep the lid closed tight everything works great

I Grabbed the cooler with one big handle instead of two little ones. But everything else was same. I didn’t think about screwing it in where the batteries sit. Imma steal that idea

Just did something very similar, except I hooked the pump onto the cooler’s handle & gave the tube enough slack so that turning the handle doesn’t pull it out of the silicone. Nice vid

Could you have made the video a little longer? I mean, it was so enjoyable listening to that music and watching every single freaking move you made' opening drawers, pulling bits out, putting the bit in the drill, opening the battery package... all those wonderful things. Thanks.

Thank you so much for the video. It's very interesting. But i will make mine with the system behind and the hose through the lid, because you can put inside more water without filter risk. Thank you!!!

Great Video Seth Vostad out of all the videos on KZfaq on how make a live well out of a cooler your Information Video I think is the best. Im going to a deep sea charter trip in about a few weeks and the we are not allowed to bring a cooler bigger then 48 quarts so your example works great. My only question is that the cooler is 48 quarts which is about 12 gallons and the biggest aerator I can find for affordable price aerators up to 8 gallons so since the cooler is 12 gallons and the aerator only aerators up to 8 gallon do I need to buy two aerator or is the one enough? Plus the stone that came with aerator looks very small and I feels would not make enough buubledo you thing it would be better to get a bigger aerator stone also??
@1997michigan1997M

I'm glad you liked the video! I think I would buy 2 aerators just to be safe and just use the stones that come with them. Good luck on your trip

I’m New to fishing so please don’t butcher me for asking this but what kind of water do you add to the cooler. Fresh water or the water they come from. P.S: I’ve wanted to fish and hunt all my life but no one in my family would ever teach me because I’m a girl. So now that I’m grown I’m trying to learn this on my own.

Best to use water from the lake or river you're fishing from. Same temperature and consistency that the fish was already living in before they were caught. Seems to work best that way for me.

Any idea if I use two in a 48 quart cooler if it would keep bass alive for a tournament?
@TheFishinDad
@TheFishinDad 7 жыл бұрын
Each aerator should say on it how many gallons it's rated for. That particular one is only rated for 8 gallons so 32quarts. You can get a small pond aeration stone at a garden center and attach that instead of the stock stone and that might give you enough for a 48? Two would be more than sufficient though

How long do the fish live in it? Does that bubbler supply enough oxygen for them all day? I'm going to be making one of these soon
@gregcampbelle3696
@gregcampbelle3696 4 жыл бұрын
Hey a year late on the comment but better than never. The answer is yes and no. Yes O2 should be ok, but not for waste products. The problem believe it or not is not lack of O2. There is more than enough O2 provided by the aerator to keep several fish for more hours than you probably want to fish. The real problem is ammonia content in the water (AKA fish pee) which they do more of in hot weather when stressed. You can have problems even in large fancy recirculating livewells on timers in hot weather. So if you are not replacing the water regularly, the problem becomes an even bigger one. Some G-Juice or other similar additives and a little ice will extend your viability a little bit, but this is really a short term kind of livewell, not an all day one.

Greg Campbelle I did make one and had it in my boat for a while, just took up too much room. The Bass and panfish seem to do the best (made it all day and the whole way home) the trout seemed to die within a few hours for some reason

I have same setup. If you plan to use it for tournaments I wouldn't recommend just using this and the bubbler. I had 2 3lb smallies in mine and after about 2 hours of fishing the fish started looking pale. Even after water changes every 15-20 mins and ice bottles. Fish swam away fine when I released them, but Im looking into putting some type of pump or aerator and hopefully it'll keep them in better shape.
