Hi Robert, great to hear from you. Thank you for the update feedback, very much appreciated by us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. It's great to be able to share the work we do with the Welsh lovespoon tradition and different wood carving and scroll saw projects. That is the aim of our KZfaq channel, to encourage others to have a go at making things in wood themselves. Thank you again for the positive feedback and supporting our KZfaq channel. All the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

Thank you! Do you have any suggestions for where we can get the tools in this video - for example the chisel tool?

Hi Harriet, great to hear from you. Hope the video was useful. If you are looking to buy wood carving gouges, I recommend a few places. My own personal preference are vintage wood carving gouges, for example, Herring Bros and Addis. Fantastic steel and beautifully made. The only places you can find these are on ebay by doing a search for 'vintage wood carving chisels'. Alternatively, I believe there is a shop in Bristol that sells vintage gouges too. The other option is to buy new gouges. Not the same quality but there are some still being made here in the UK that are good quality. The three companies I am familiar with are Robert Sorby, Ashley Iles and Henry Taylor. All, I believe made here in the UK and of a good standard. Out of the three Robert Sorby would be my own choice. Feel free to contact us if you need any further assistance. Hope you enjoy making your own Welsh lovespoons, it is a fantastic tradition. All the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

I do a lot of Celtic knots on spoons. I'm having trouble getting them smooth enough on the over and unders and when it comes to the finish the end grains are very thirsty. What's the best finish for exotic Woods that won't run

Hi Chris, great to hear from you. The method we use for finishing our lovespoons is shellac sand and sealer. We are planning to do a video soon dedicated to finishing. It is the same method we use on all the woods we carve. In terms of rubbing down between coats of shellac we use different grades of glass paper ranging from p240 to p320. You can use finer glass paper depending on the time you wish to spend finishing your spoons. Hope that gives you a little insight into our finishing process but as I said we are planning to do a dedicated video on this subject. Give us a shout if you have any other questions. Great to hear from you, all the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop.

hi new to carving what's the idea thickness of wood fo the spoons the first one i did seamed to thick , thank you
@DailovespoonsThomas
@DailovespoonsThomas 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, great to hear from you. We generally cut most of our spoon blanks to around 1.5cm thick but it depends on the type of project you are working on. If you are carving links and seeds for example you need a much thicker piece of wood. For getting started a thickness of about 1.5cm should be fine. Hope that helps, and you are enjoying wood carving, it's a great material to work with. Thanks again for getting in touch and supporting our KZfaq channel. All the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

You're more than welcome. The truth is that there is no right or wro when it comes to thickness but around 15mm is what we prefer. Delighted to hear that the videos are proving useful. Hope you continue to enjoy making lovespoons, it's a fantastic tradition. Thanks again for getting in touch, all the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

Love your work as always, but how long does it take you to carve a spoon from start to finish? And how much do you charge for a spoon?
@DailovespoonsThomas
@DailovespoonsThomas 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you again for getting in contact. It can take us any where between an hour and several hundred hours to make a lovespoon from start to finish. It just depends on design and intricacy. In regards to price it is equally varied. A simple love spoon can cost as little as £5 but I have handcarved bespoke lovespoons that have cost £500+ to design and handcarve. It just depends upon the amount of time it takes us to design and handcarve. You also have to take into account the cost of the wood etc when pricing. In this case, we are fortunate to be able to recycle much of the wood we use allowing us to keep costs down. Thank you again, let me know if you have any other questions, it's always a pleasure to be able to share ideas with anyone who is interested. All the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop 👍👍

@@DailovespoonsThomasit's good seeing old wood get repurposed. I hate seeing good timbers going to the dump for landfill. My workshop has too much space that I have filled with sever months wort of CNC carving material. Some pieces I hate cutting up !! Nothing goes to waste I give sawdust away as pet bedding or garden mulch. Larger scraps for log kindling. Just 2 days into whittling, I've decided to separate wood chips from sawdust as even easier kindling for friend's log burner. The chips are too big for cyclone dust separator & keep blocking the vacuum pipes.
