We made a magic pillowcase video years ago that showed how to make these simple, fun, and practical gifts. Over the years, you've had questions about using directional fabrics, and making the pillowcase different sizes.

Jen, please make your viewers aware that if you are making a matching pair of pillowcases you must place one cuff on the left side of fabric and the second pillowcase place the cuff on the right side of fabric. If not one of the pillowcases will be upside down when you place it on the bed. I got that tip from another vloger Jean Truelove.

Why not just fold the fabric in half when cutting the 27” width? Then you’d be cutting 22” and you’d see what you’re doing. Not all fabrics line up. Some patterns run on the diagonal, so you might not be able to line up the “top of the hammock.” Also, won’t the pattern be upside down on the back side of the pillowcase? I’ve done directional ones by cutting the 27” x 45” fabric into 2 pieces that are 27” x 22.5”, then rotate one and sew them back together before continuing. Then both sides of the pillowcase are correct and it can be used with the opening going toward the left or right.

Thanks Jen for the updated “Magic Pillow Instructions”. Few suggestions: use magic sizing on the fabric before cutting and you will find that not only are your cuts more accurate, but the rest of the assembly will be easier; also after stitching the first 1/4” seam and before you turn give a press to those stitches to set the seam, for this will also aid in getting the balance of the french seam construction completed; and finally take the Clover tool and run it down the side and bottom seam for this too will help in getting that final step in the french seam construction.

You're never too old to learn something new. I'm 77, been sewing for years, and now know how to to French seams. Love your tutorials.

I like to line up all the selvages of the fabric pieces on the right and sew them together, then trim off the selvages on both sides before stiching the pillow seams. Then you can be sure that you haven't cut one piece too long or too short.

You mentioned the link to the free pattern download. When I clicked on the link and went to your site the pattern still said it was free and pointed to another link. That takes you to a professionally printed pattern that you need to buy instead of one to download. Absolutely love the video though. You do need to change alternate where you place the cuff if your making matching pillowcases, one on the left and the other on the right side.

Does the fabric need to be washed first? Or does the measurements account for some shrinkage from future washings? I hope someone will answer as I need 2 pillow cases to match quilts I made for my grandsons for Christmas

Love this video. I'm going to make my husband a John Wayne quilt for our 40th wedding anniversary and I'm going to use this technique to make pillowcases to make pillows to go with it! Thanks so much for sharing your creativity and inspiration! Always love watching your watching you create!
