Common Man Cocktails

12 жыл бұрын

Let's learn how to make the margarita, common man cocktails style. This margarita is made without a blender and we love it best with a Reposado Tequila but you can make them with a blanco and enjoy it too.
This cocktail recipe was designed by us and is a great margarita to make at home from scratch. This is, by far, one of the best margarita on the rocks recipes because it brings good agave nectar sweet against a lime sour.
You don't need a margarita mix, making a good margarita just requires a few seconds of your time squeezing a lime and using your favorite 100% de agave tequila, no blender or difficult bar tools needed. This is basic bartending 101 in its finest.
You can make it in the comfort of your own home without a blender without a mix and without a lot of effort. Just get a lemon squeeze (or lime squeeze) and you're off to the races!
More Bartending 101 Basics are here on our channel!

I finally found agave syrup(at a tea place) while X-mas shopping. I'm trying your recipe now. Review(multiple comments): The dark agave syrup brings out the green in the lime juice(my recipe looks almost white). Served up over crushed ice, looks properly tropical. I am initially concerned about added dilution from crushed ice. Big bonus that this recipe actually makes 2 full drinks in my cocktail glasses.

i tried making margaritas many times in the past only to have them wayyyy to sour. nobody ever lists adding a sweetener... which if you drink margaritas in pubs and restaurants it obviously has. thanks for having the balls to list the agave nectar. you're saving people a lot of frustration.
@cmcocktails
@cmcocktails 5 жыл бұрын
gotta be honest, I've never really seen a margarita that doesn't have a sweetener, what recipe books are you using? Some may use an orange liqueur as its primary sweetening agent, but they tend to go lighter on the lime juice. Or, if it calls for "sour mix" that covers both sweet and sour in one ingredient. But yeah, if you're not adding a balanced sweet, then you're probably following some random guys shitty ass recipe that he made up in his basement bar while drunk :)

I first drank Margarita at a Mexican restaurant, they came frozen. When I moved to my current home (some 20 years ago). My friend, who helped me move, and I went to get some Margaritas at a restaurant around the corner (literally), Cantina Los Amigos. We ordered a pitcher of 'The Perfect Margaritas', they were not frozen. I love them, my friend, not so much. I got the bartender to give me the recipe (on my third visit), they used the same ingredients as you (she used Cointreau). But, she used a 2-1-1-1 ratio. At the time I had never heard of Agave Nectar, and could not find it anywhere, I had to order it online. I have had it with Limoncello instead of the orange liquor, I like it better.
@cmcocktails
@cmcocktails 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 2-1-1-1 isn't that abnormal of a ratio. There is also a 3-2-1 (3 tequila, 2 cointreau, 1 lime juice) but that's pretty intense.

I liek mine more on the sour side, but with a salt rim too. I like the texture of the salt and the extra dimension. but I most of the time first swallow the margarita and than put my lip in my mouth, so it's more like an aftertaste and it doesn't dominate the flavour

I don't have much margarita experience but i tried this recipe and loved it. one question, if I wanted to make a flavored one, such as peach, would it be as simple as substituting/adding an ingredient? if so, what do you suggest? if not, what do you suggest? if you're able to, would appreciate the help.
@cmcocktails
@cmcocktails 9 жыл бұрын
Chad Senger I'm sitting here in Cancun right now and they were adding peach to everything but...not, it's not that simple. Okay, it can be that simple but it may not be exactly what you expect. Almost every 'peach' product is sweet so that will toss off the balance. You could use Cruzan Peach Rum to make sure you get the peach without the added sweetness but the alcohol may toss off the balance a bit, if that's the case, add 1/4 oz. of lime and agave/sugar to it to balance it back out. If you only have peach schnapps, then remove some of the agave nectar to remove that sweetness since the peach schnapps will provide it instead.

For a blue one, add a couple of shots of Blue Curaco, for a nice Green nuclear colour, a couple of shots of Midori. For a nice pink one for the Mrs (or yourself for that matter) a couple of shots of Strawberry Liqueur. That how we do it over here in Oz anyway..Dont take out the Triple sec, it needs it ! (I use Cointreau myself) but wind back the lime juice to say half a lime if adding a sweetish flavour to your mix. We dont have or use the agave nectar here so no need for us to lessen off the sweet. (I will look out for it though Common Man Cocktails!) Enjoy and experiment..

Wow that's a good recipe. I've been trying to update my liquor collection because I've let it lapse a bit and one of the drinks I want to be able to make as a standard is a margarita. I'm going to have to try this recipe, but I would probably go with the triple sec since I'm poor right now. :( Otherwise I should be able to get what you have at a fair price. Qotd: I tend to like them half way between balanced and sour. The sweet is part of the drink, but I like to emphasize the sour more.

On to the taste: The lime bite is softer than I'm used to. There's some added orange flavour, and some early sweetness. I don't get tequila until toward the finish, and the alcohol heat is subtle. I'd actually like a little more warmth to remind me I'm drinking a 2oz spirit drink, but then again, it's -30C and December, not sunny July. Well-balanced overall, leaning a little to the sweet side(whereas mine is more sour than sweet).

Overall, a little sweet for my palette, but certainly not undrinkable. Probably a little more approachable overall to the average drinker, as my recipe is more sour, and more spirit-forward. Agave syrup is a great concept, but I think it adds too much sweetness for me, personally. It certainly pairs better with the tequila than sugar or simple syrup does. I'd call this a solid margarita, and suggest that everyone who reads this give it a try. Reposado is definitely the way to go in margaritas.

there are more than four brands and shades/colors. I use darker amber ones that aren't "light", but you can use whatever you want or can get, it's really not going to be the biggest determining factor of a good CMC margarita. The tequila will be the most important.

The additional sweetness makes these go down faster, which renders my dilution concern irrelevant. I like the added orange-peel bitterness enough that I'll probably increase the triple sec in my own recipe. My wife tried it, she likes it better than my own recipe. Sipping through the sidecar, the drink is a little more diluted, and seems to open up a little more. It's a good effect.

I tend to prefer things slightly sweeter (this would include the Margarita). Having said that, you have to be very careful not to go too sweet causing your stomach to be upset from it being too rich. It's a delicate line, but in the end I think everyone would think their own preference is the "perfect mix" of course haha

Maybe 2oz was a little overshooting it, but even at 1oz it definitely wasn't sweet enough for my taste. Having said that, it pretty much tasted no different from 3/4oz to 1oz, so I really think it was the nectar. Maybe the better answer is to avoid light agave nectar all together with this recipe (I used it because it's all I had)

@cmcocktails 9 жыл бұрын
Reid Wicks replace agave nectar with a simple syrup should be fine, you may need to add a bit more simple syrup if it's not balancing out right (considering agave nectar has a higher sweet factor)

Reid Wicks usually I ask people who likes sweeter margarita's (or sweeter drinks) and who likes sour ones. Then I just make two batches (one with more sugar/nectar, one with less or standard amount) that way both types of people have what they want.

This recipe is definitely a bit more common man "sweet agave forward", today we usually drink them more tequila forward. Solerno also assist in giving it that punch because it's not a weak orange liqueur, it's at standard core spirit ABV. Plus it tastes awesome.

I tried this with light agave nectar and it didn't work out too well. After thinking it was way too tart, I added about half an ounce more of the nectar and it didn't seem to make much difference. For that reason, I suspect it was the agave nectar I had. If you have a light agave nectar, consider adding nearly 2 ounces of it. Judging by the color, the nectar you used is definitely not a light nectar. Mine is a very light yellow, lighter than the yellow of your finished margarita in this video.

i am so dissapointed. I just made my first margarita ever now and i did not like it. I really thought i would love it. Maybe i am not a tequila guy then. Well back to my rums and vodka cocktails then. Gona make myself a daiquiri then

You can buy tub mix at Wal-Mart. Just add ice and blend in a blender

Holy shyte. This was damn good, cuz. Not perfect. I used cheapo triple sec and agave in the raw. Way better than that garbage margarita mix crap for sure. Also scored another cheap tequila at the ghetto liquor store. Dos Lunas Reposado. $14.95/750ml. insanely good for that price.

Yeah, Dos Lunas isn't bad, and that's a pretty low price. I had a couple of bottles but gave them away (I think I still have the repo) because I had too much tequila.

El Jimador and Lunazul are good alts imo. Always get the repo! :D

You are using expensive quality tequila and triple sec just to dump it all into a soup of crushed ice. After 5 mins max you'll be drinking citrucy water as your ice starts melting really fast. Such a waste of money! I suppose it's ok to have margarita on the rocks but it only makes sense with 1-2 large ice cubes (ice sphere even better).

everyone has their own way of drinking a margarita, don't let me stop you from doing it your way. But, also don't bitch when people have their own style ;-) If it takes you five minutes to drink this then you're not doing it right.
