This is a new version of a previous video that hopefully shows a bit more detail of how to bind/whip the feathers on to a shaft when making Medieval style arrows, also showing the `tying off` at the end that several people have asked us to show again, I hope it helps.

I just love watching this kind of craftmanship. I was surprised that the string was bright through the entire length of feather. Just to think, this level of work for one shot with a bow. I suppose fletching was handed down in the family, and they learned to work very fast while staying very precise.

Hi, its because the glue used in the period this type of arrow represents would not be suitable in the rain, so binding the feathers on makes them more secure in battle.

Thanks. The UK tends to use left wing, traditionaly that was what was exported to the UK from the US, some right wing has started to be used over here, but not as much as left. I wouldent change the way I bind on feathers, quite frankly it would mess my mind up trying to do it the other way as I have been doing it this way round for 30 years or more.

Maybe it's the binding thread you are using, maybe it's too thick, it's ok to have some gaps, I never use steam after binding. Are you pulling too tightly and actually catching bits of the feather underneath the binding onto the quill rather then going in between the feath?

Watching vids like this makes me more likely to believe that bows weren't used in battle as they're often shown in movies (very ironic how movie depictions seem to dictate what our popular beliefs of history become). What I mean is that this is clearly a tedious process and I doubt that just anyone could do this so the idea that Medieval commanders would use archers at maximum range, essentially throwing away arrows just hoping to score a minimally low percentage of casualties doesn't make sense to me. In this fashion you'd very quickly exhaust your supply of arrows, the enemy would close the distance and the archers without more arrows would either have to run or essentially become foot soldiers. I doubt that just any Englishman or other combat archers of different regions could just pick up 80lb or much heavier bows so I would have to assume that combat capable archers weren't in infinite supply.
@-----REDACTED-----
@-----REDACTED----- 5 жыл бұрын
Englishmen were required by law to practice archery every sunday after church. At 250 yards arrows will wound, at 100 kill and penetrate armour at 60 yards. It is estimated that at the battle of agincourt alone english archers shot about 1000 arrows a minute. Henry V restocked the royal armoury when he ascended the throne and there is record of a contract for 12000 arrows ordered. Archers carried about 60-75 arrows into battle and could shoot more than 10 arrows per minute, anything less and he would be unfit for service. Henry V also ordered large-scale gathering of feathers in 1417 and 1418, about 1.2 million feathers. A conservative calculation of arrow supply I once saw was that Henry had about 1 million arrows with him at agincourt. So, yeah...
@mikegrossberg8624
@mikegrossberg8624 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry, archers DIDN'T make their OWN arrows to go to war. Arrows were made in mass production, by people contracted to do so. That was ALL they did. They would take the "raw" materials(shafts, feathers, points,etc), and one person would ready the shaft, one person would apply the fletching, one person would put on the point, then the finished arrows would be handed off to someone else to be bundled(usually 24 in a bundle) up for shipping. It was like assembly-line work, and it would be done in multiple locations. The bundled arrows would then be sent to a central location, where they would be packaged in cloth bags, which would be loaded onto carts(or wagons) for transport. Archers on the line would usually have at least a couple of bundles on the ground by them, and one bundle hanging from their belts
