Wow, love this, I particularly love the layering aspect. I have a colorless blender from absolutely years ago, it's a felt pen though, absent of colour.

Hi Penny, Yes, the colorless blender works pretty well to smooth over textured pencil marks, and blend and thin the wax base in the pigments, which then allows additional color layers on that treated passage. Have fun!

Hi Belinda, thanks so much for your great monotype videos! Question: do you wait for the ink to dry before you add colored pencils, watercolor, etc.? Also, If I am layering monotypes (printing more than one image on the same piece of paper with multiple passes), do I need to let the ink dry between the passes? Thanks much!

Hi Ann, if you’re adding watercolors, colored pencils or pastels, wait till the ink is completely dry. Layering inks wet vs dry will have different results based on the inks you choose, your paper, and the humidity of your studio. Run some small test prints with random overlaps, and mark the dates on the back so you can examine and note the drying time, blending properties of overlapped colors, or complete coverage of one color over another. Be sure to mark your brand and type on inks and paper in your tests - record results for future reference. 👍🏼

Dear Belinda, Do you start with images from a copier or will an ink jet photo work? Can an etching press be used in the trace monotype process? Many thanks, Jo Ann

Hi Jo Ann, You can copy photos on an inkjet printer, or take them to Kinkos and have copies/enlargements/reductions made, or trace photos and use the tracings to layout your design... the sky is the limit. And yes, you can use an etching press, though it's not necessary. The pressure of pen/pencil to paper will pick up the ink just fine. Happy printing!

Thank you for sharing. I saw this on Daily Paintworks and was curious about how this was a monoprint. Is the ink waterproof for watercolor applications?

Hi +Shelly Parchman - thanks for visiting! Yes, the Akua inks do not re-wet after they dry, and they clean up with soap and water. I've sloshed lots of watercolor on monotypes and link ute using this ink, and never had any bleed or edge-blossom on a print. Happy printmaking to you!

Can you use rice paper with this technique?

Hi Emily, yes, you can, but it will depend on the integrity of the rice paper. They are not all made the same way... Test a swatch of paper you have with your colored pencils to ensure the fibers don't mar, roll or pill from the friction of the colored pencils first. If they take the color without tearing, you're Good to Go! Happy printing!
