I watched your other videos, and I'm happy to be proven wrong. I have the uncle of this planer, an SCM MiniMax FS350, a 14" jointer / 8" X 14" planer combo tipping the scales at 320kg. I had to go the angle iron route. For a shop of limited space though, the Axminster as you have it on the carriage looks like a nice bit of gear. Nicely done informative video. Cheers!

Hi Olly, I am pretty sure that this design will work well with the new planer - I have stood on it (I DO NOT weight 150 kgs) and it seems fine - what a great skate board ! Getting the machine on will not be difficult and I may be able to capture the process on video. My (then) 8 year old daughter and I moved the shed that I re-roofed 100metres, in one piece, in an afternoon (it weighed over a ton) and so the planer should be a breeze. Peter

Hello, when lifting from corners like this you should assume the weight is distributed over only three of the castors. It's fairly easy to get a bit of warp, or the floor isn't flat etc and you have a castor taking very little load. Conversely there are no situations where you can have two wheels off the ground.

A very sturdy construction and good advice on the subject of castors. I wish I'd heard it a few years ago! ;-) I've had the same planer/thicknesser (its predecessor) for several years now and I've only really been impressed. I look forward to seeing how you get on and how you attempt to fit it to the mobile base you've created.

Hi Joel, With the drill press make the base as heavy as you can. If your drill press is full height then you would need a low profile castor carriage like mine but you could then put weights on the base of the press. If it is a half height press then build a set of drawers with castors underneath - similar to my band saw base (seen in many videos). If you cant make the base heavier then you have to make it bigger. When all four brakes are on the arrangement stays still. Peter

Hi Tim, The ground clearance is only 1 cm. I did that to avoid the planer being raised any more than necessary but it does have the advantage that you mention - most things I make are over engineered and so unless I have failed to spot a defect in the wood - all will be fine. I did think about self levelling. Only one castor with that capability is needed but I think that is overkill. Cheers. Peter

You are right to see this as the weak point in the design but I have made many such devices and good quality oak rarely fails. The carriage is now in operation, it easily survived the loading process and it works perfectly. I will keep an eye on it of course. Take a look at my recent 3 videos about the new planer - in fact check out the last minute or so of the second setup video - not many people can claim to have danced with their planning machine ! Hi Peter. Nice presentation. I can only see that loading your machine onto this platform would have to be done squarely and very carefully. I would suggest that the distributed load rating of your castors is more than adequate, but, the point load on your oak crossbeams would not be durable enough to resist cracking at the junction of the radius you have provided for your castor to have 360 degree rotation. If you were to laminate this member, your would mitigate the stresses. I suggest an angle steel running the length of your castor mounting beam - inlayed for appearance. You could also route two 6mm channels the length of your castor support beam either side of your through bolts to run some flat steel bar that would give the timber a steel spine. I have seen timber endure very large distributed loads, but the fibers give way when the point loads come into play.

Thanks Peter! This is great timing for me as I need a couple of these for my planer and drill press. The drill press might be tricky because the small base. One question on your design. Won't the base still have the chance to move with all 4 casters that can swivel or does the brake stop the rotation too?

You should have no trouble finding suitable castors - certainly from Coldene. You could create a design with 6 or 8 castors. If you have an open area in the middle, under the frame, of the planer then you could put a couple there. My first design would have used 2 x 1/4 " mild steel across the diagonals under the machine, bent up and then out at the ends to take the castors. There would have had to be a bend where they cross at the centre or a weld. Wood was easy for me with just 150kgs. Peter

Peter- many thanks for another excellent video! I have the same model and built a carriage using angle iron, but fell into the trap of mounting the casters at each corner, thus leading to instability. Thank you so much for making this point, which with hindsight (always 20/20) is now blindingly obvious! Many thanks also for mentioning the thicknessing gauge accessory, of which I was not aware. Nice build and also good planning ahead. I have only one bad thought on you cart. The area you take out for the casters, that leaves a very thin area of the wood to hold the weight of your planner. I would have went with longer bolts for the casters and left more wood in the tongue for the casters. Just my option.

William Castleberry Hi William, The version shown in the video developed a crack to the bottom lip when I transferred my Axminster planer off and my new Jet planer onto the platform - I put all of the weight on the front lip. I'm sure it will be more than adequate. I have one of those £30 mobile base frames with mine. I wish it hard slightly larger wheels but it doesn't flex or anything. If you can capture that footage, it would be great, I'm sure! All I can remember is that the weight is obviously in the centre but very low down, because of the motor's location. Some machines are worse than others (my big bandsaw's a nightmare because of its shape).

Hello Peter I have been watching your videos with GREAT interest and I have to say that you have inspired me to take on woodworking. I am still learning as I am quite new into this field, but have to say I love it. Just bought a Festool Domino DF 500 Q-Plus and wanted to ask you a couple of questions regarding the diferences between Festool Domino DF 500 Q-Plus and the one you use, also what is OSMO and what type do you use? You are a great man and guess your family is very proud of you. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge and experience on you tube. Vladimir Petrov

Hi Vladimir, Thank you for your supportive comments - you are very kind. My Domino is the same as yours but we have 240 v electricity here in the UK. This machine has completely changed my approach to woodwork and everything now is so much easier. Osmo is the name of a make of finishing oil which is sold all over the world. I use it a lot and have produced some videos about it. You can get indoor and outdoor grades of oil and they have some special ones with colour in it as well. I am sure that you can do an internet search and find it. It is not cheap but the results are superb. I hope that you have a happy and peaceful Christmas. Peter

Peter, thank you for the plans. In the video above you make the bottom frame from four pieces of 20mm oak, domino jointed. In the revised Jet plans you sent me am I correct in assuming that the base is now one sheet 520mm x 795mm? If so why did you change?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
The Jet machine is a bit heavier and in manoeuvring the old Axminster machine off the original platform I cracked part of the oak framing. Hence the stronger base. If you have received the plans for the new castor carriage you will see a photo attached of the new base. It is not a single piece of wood for the base but a frame construction shown clearly in the photo. Peter

Nice work. You also have a fail safe with this design, because of the low clearance ( less than an inch it seems) above the floor. I although unlikely, if the structure was to be accidentally overloaded to the point that the caster arm gave way, then the machine would only fall a small distance. Therefore there seems no increased risk of the machine rolling which is a smart move. One feature I am thinking might be a good idea are self levelling legs so any tiny wobble is automatically eliminated

Hello and thanks for your quick reply. I also live in the UK (Northern Ireland) which makes it easier to get all tools that I see in your videos. I am currently working on building a router table and have bought a few UJK items from Axminster that I saw in your reviews. Not sure if thit is the best decision, but I will try to make the top of the table from Fermica kitchen work top. The cast iron one you have is probably the best, but my budget has shrunk a bit over the christmas period:) , so I am going to try with fermica first and if it's not good enough will have to save up for the proper cast iron one. My next purchase will be a mitre saw and wanted to ask you for your advice as I have narrowed it down to Festool Kapex and Bosch GCM 12 GDL 12" gliding mitre saw, which has a negative side with it's weight of 32kg. There are so many questions I would like to ask you, but I just don't wan't to take up your time. Many thanks once again
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Vladimir Well I was not expecting you to be in the UK - super. I made a router table using kitchen work top with Formica and it lasted nearly 12 years. The most important thing is to make sure that the router is securely mounted. You will amazed at the amount of torque that a router produces when it starts up. Before I bought my current mitre saw I had two on my short list - the same two that you have. The Kapex won and was my very first Festool purchase (from Axminster of course). It took all of my savings and a bit more but it is worth every penny. Everything seems to go together absolutely square using Festool kit. Please do not worry about contacting me. I was lucky enough to have been employed throughout my working years and now it is time to give something back. I make my videos to help other people - and that includes you. Peter

Peter Parfitt Hi Peter I have been living in N.Ireland for just over 5 years now as my wife is from here. We both travelled aroung for a while and lived in few different countries but decided to settle down here for good. 12 years is quite impresive, it will probably outlive many current VALUE router table brands on the market. Will give it a try anyway. Although I haven't purchased it yet, it's in my shopping cart on the Axminster website, a UJK Technology 10mm Aluminium Router Table Insert for securing my recently purchased 2400w Triton router which hope it would have plenty of power for most tasks mounted under the table. Hope it will fit onto the universal drilled base sturdy and safe. I think I am leaning towards the Kapex 120 as well, but will have to wait for a while and save up unless I get a good bargain online. Somebody mentioned that the 10" kapex is more precised than the super heavy bosch, which advantage is the extra capacity. There are so many tools and machines around your workshop, I don't even know what some of them are for? :)) Hope to have a shop like yours some day. It all takes time and MONEY :) Would love to work with oak as I have a couple of projects on my mind in the near future when I complete the router table. Oak looks so nice and it's probably very strong. I haven't managed to find a place that sells oak in my town yet as it's probably very expensive and I guess it will have to be ordered from elsewhere. Thanks for your time, it is so kind of you.

Hi Vladimir In order to secure the router to the (effectively chipboard) work top I made up a quite complicated clamping arrangement. I put the 10mm rails (used with the fence) midway through the router and clamped them in place. I made up a bracket to take the rails that was glued and screwed to the nearside of the work top. I then had several removeable clamping pieces that screwed on and held the router tight. When all of that is made up I put the router in place with a cutter in the router. I then very slowly made a cut through the work top and this was then dead centre with the router. The hole needs to be large enough to take the collet extension which you will need to fit in your router. I have recently bought a new one from Axminster (211367). If your woodworking skills are not yet up to making a really secure fixing for your router then you must find a local woodworker who is prepared to help you. I have the Kapex 120 and it is brilliant. The extra capacity of the Bosch would only be significant if you were building big things all of the time. I have never found any problems with the capacity of the Kapex. Once you find a good timber yard you should get to know them. They may be able to let you have some off cuts at a discount. When I first started woodworking I used to go around looking for old furniture that people were throwing away in order to rescue the wood. Good luck and take great care building your router table. Peter

given the weight in question I would have put a metal plate across the top and bottom of the 2 pieces you indicate at 4:00, to ensure the ends don't break off and to ensure the wood does not split a long the grain pattern.

Hello Peter Further to my caster problems that asked your advise about. I have taken a closer look at the problem and as usual you are right, in fact you mention this in your video. The casters cannot rotate the whole 360 degrees and are getting caught under the machine. I have ordered the casters that you recommend from Coldene and will make a proper base. The AT129PT is a fair bit heavier 272 kg than the machine that you made your base for so do you think that I should use Thicker wood for the project. Once again many thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with others, there not many people prepared to do so these days,
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg, Ah, I did not think about the clearance issue but at least you have spotted that now. Remember that the plans that I sent have both the old and the new version and it is the new version that you should use albeit with slightly thicker wood - say 6 mm extra all round but make sure that the planer will fit as well as the castors having clearance. Getting the machine onto the platform is not easy. I put some pieces of 18 mm MDF under the body of the platform thus lifting it off the castors. I then "walked" the planer onto the platform and fitted the final side piece along the side through which the machine was moved. In order to get the carriage off the MDF I used some simple levers to raise one side at a time allowing one piece of MDF to be removed each time. Good luck and watch your back and your toes. Peter

Nice mobile base, actually the nicest I've seen yet on KZfaq, and I appreciate your design commentary. I've been trolling around for mobile bases because I must create one for my 600 lb. (280kg) industrial radial arm saw, which isn't just heavy, it is top-heavy. My challenge is that due to its very large size and the roughness of the floor surfaces, I have chosen to use 4" casters (American-English sp.) and need about 25mm - 35mm clearance, which will raise the worksurface too much. That means I need to come up with a retractable set of wheels. I've tried the hinged, swing-down style and the tool just weighs too much for that method. Any good ideas? Today, I'm trying to rig up a scissor-jack mechanism -- oh yes, that is the sound of a treacherously complex system ... and I'm uneasy about it.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 9 жыл бұрын
SuperBardley I have had to overcome a problem like this a while ago. I made a base that kept the bottom of the machine just an inch off the floor and then had heavy duty castors out to the side. If you send me your email address by private message I will send a picture to you. No need for a scissor jack mechanism at all. Peter

Hi, I am looking at building something similar to take a stack of storage boxes. There is obviously a issue with centre of balance and tipping point. I was considering designing in a set of ‘outriggers’ that can pulled out of the frame for timers when the stack is being moved. I am just trying to figure out how to do it. Have you come across anything similar?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
This design keeps the CofG within the footprint of the castors quite safely. With your stack it only becomes an issue if you tilt the stack sufficiently to get the CofG beyond that footprint. This is unlikely unless the stack is very high. Peter
@H2Dwoat
@H2Dwoat 5 жыл бұрын
New Brit Workshop: I am a belt and braces person so the possibility bothers me. The stack is likely to be as much as 6ft tall so I am going to calculate for CofG but my gut says it could be a problem. The stack is likely to approach 200kg in weight so it would likely be disastrous at best and downright dangerous at worst if it were to topple. My garage floor is pretty good but not perfect so any thing that hinders a caster might cause the stack to shift, hence my caution. Just trying to mitigate risk with the outriggers. Still brainstorming at the moment, so I will see what I can come up with.

Peter, I am a new subscriber and enjoyed your video very much. I have 2 questions, firstly I don't see how to email you for plans in the about section and secondly, as I don't have a domino machine do you think 10mm dowels combined with strategically placed pocket screws (and a 5mm thicker oak base board) would be sufficiently strong? Thanks and keep up the good work... Regards Steve

Steve Harris Hi Steve, To get the plans to you I need your email address. You can send this privately by clicking on "New Brit Workshop" then hit the "About" tab followed by "Send Message". In your message tell me what plans you would like and also give me your email address. I will then send whatever plans you would like free of charge to your email address. On the second point I would expect your idea to be strong enough. The design is quite strong with screws and glue alone so having some dowels too will help. Welcome to The New Brit Workshop. Peter

John Fithian-Franks Hi John, I am not sure if you have the plans for the castor carriage - if not just send your email address by Private Message and I will send them free of charge. I have built a stronger carriage since making the film as I now have the bigger planer. For that I have used the 75 mm twin wheel castors from the Coldene "Institutional" range - product code CDTWBH75BL. The 50 mm castors shown in the film are from the same range and are product code CDTWBH50BL. The Coldene web site is called Firstcastor dot co dot uk. My plans show both the original design and the stronger design. Peter

A simple question, if I may. Shortly, I will be making a couple of these trolley bases for my workshop. I was doing some research as to the gross capacity of castors. I used to think that 4 castors with the capability load of 25kg each would amount to a total capacity load of 100kg. However, I read somewhere that to properly calculate the total combined capability of 4 castors is to divide the total capability of the 4 castors by 3 and this would give the actual safe maximum load. In my example of 25kg castors = 100kg combined. 100 ÷ 3 = 33.33 kg total capability of the 4 castors to prevent castor damage. Is this right? The total capability load does then determine what castor should be used and could therefore change the design of the trolley they are to be fixed to. I hope that makes sense. If this is right, would your castors be best at a 115kg load capability each in order to maintain your 150kg payload over a longer period, without castor damage or premature ware. What are your thoughts on this?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop Жыл бұрын
I have not read anything saying that one should divide the gross capacity by 3. However, my platform is as good today as it was when made and all of my other castor platforms are similarly fine. I am not sure if Coldene still do the castors that I used. To be on the safe side I would recommend that you seek advice from the supplier of your castors. Good luck. Cheers. Peter

Peter this video is three years old now, and I'd be interested to know if the platform has stood the test of time? It's beautifully made, and put together, but it worries me. I have limited woodworking experience, but I am enjoying working with wood with all the machinery at the Blenheim Menz Shed in New Zealand (I am the secretary and have been the there two and a half years). However I worked as a toolmaker at Ford's Product Development site in Dunton Essex for nearly 40 years, so I think in terms of metal. The long arms for the casters worries me as there is so much leverage, and the wood not 'that' thick. I imagine that oak is something special from a wood point of view though. Also the platform and mounting screws are in tension, and will suffer shock loads and bending moments if running over something on the workshop floor. I'd love to hear that it is working fine and as solid as when you built it. I found your video because I have bought a bigger tool chest, and will need a trolley to move it in and out of the back of my SUV. It is heavy enough empty, so likely to weigh 200lbs or more when full. I might just weld something together with metal tube, but your platform is beautiful, I would so much prefer to go that way if I can.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor, I did revise the design and the plans that I provide reflect this. Mine is still going strong and has had the 170 kg load on it for all that time. As you are comfortable with metal fabrication you could go that route but good quality oak and my revised design could also be used. Peter

hello again peter I noticed that you fitted 4 swivelling casters to this base. Did you have any problems with this design. I have purchased a second hand Axminster AT129 PT the chap has fitted 4 x 75mm Swivelling and Braked casters. The problem I have is that the machine is really hard to move as 1 or 2 of the casters always seems to be facing in the wrong direction. Once all four have aligned themselves it moves OK. However all the pushing and shoving required to get it on the move is bending and twisting the casters. I have also noticed that all of the machinery bases you see for sale are fitted with 2 Swivelling and 2 Fixed casters. I would value your opinion and experience on this

Hi Greg, It sounds as though the castors are not the same as mine. I have no problem at all using the Coldene castors and I did recommend them for this application. My big castors on my mobile bench and tracksaw cutting station (CNC cabinet) do exhibit the "not always easy to start" behaviour but it is easy to push the cabinet in a slightly random direction in order to get the castors lined up. But the special castors on the planer platform behave perfectly all the time. Peter

It was for me but I did it on my own despite my arthritis and age. I placed a rectangle of MDF under the flat bottom so that it was off the castors. I then "walked" my planer onto the carriage. I then used a simple lever to place a slightly thicker piece of wood along one end. I used the lever again at the other end and was able to remove the MDF rectangle. I then lowered that same end to the ground, went to the other end and used the lever to lft it so that I could remove that slightly thicker piece of wood. I did not break into a sweat at any point ! This is not suitable for a bandsaw as they tend to be top heavy. You need to know the weight of your table saw before building a platform like this. If you believe you can make something strong enough then just work it out from the dimensions of your saw. Peter

A beautiful piece of work, thanks for sharing it. I have a couple of questions - If you didn't have a Domino how would you have joined the four base pieces - with a half lap joint? Presumably dowels would be rather dubious in this application. Secondly where do you buy oak like that from? I've only worked with softwoods to date, I see there are online suppliers such as britishhardwoods.co.uk, do you have a local supplier and how do you find a decent one? Thanks
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 10 жыл бұрын
Many thanks pcb. The joint between the four (flat) base pieces could be dowelled. You could also put mortices in both sides and make up some tenons of your own. The cross members, which are glued and screwed, give it quite a bit of strength. In order to find a local supplier do a Google search for outlets in your area. Failing that go into your local builders' supplier and ask where you can buy oak. Finding a decent supplier is a matter of trial and error I am afraid. Peter

The castor carriage is very low and I managed this easily on my own but I strongly recommend that two people do this together. Place a piece of sheet material (I used 19 mm MDF) under the open end of the carriage. "Walk" the machine onto the carriage by tilting and turning making about 80 mm of progress each time. When the machine is on the carriage use some levers to raise the open end of the carriage in order to retrieve the piece of MDF from below. Then screw the retaining piece onto the carriage. Peter

I always thought that you need Domino 700XL with cutting depth up to 60-70 mm and 12mm Tenons minimum, for such a huge load. I guess i was terribly wrong :( From this point, i would tell that you are using 8 mm domino cutter and depth of 25 mm, with 50 mm domino tenon? At 6.09 minutes in the video it is stated that the wheels cost £6.70 inc vat. That is incorrect. Vat is added at check out and standard delivery is £12.94 for four castors. Total for four 50 mm castors is £47.70. Just thought you should know

Hi John, Well, the video was made in September 2013. Things change and surely you must appreciate that after nearly 8 years the price might go up.

this is excellent idea and it is more difficult to make that you have make it to look. I am a hobby worker and have even a smaller shed so I need all the tools to move. do you have the planes for this as I would like to put a mortise machine on one of these. dimensions are 410x410mm but the wheels that I have from coldene are much larger than the one you have used 80x100x105mm W X L X H

5:40, So only the 12 screws are used to prevent the heavy machine from detaching the bottom plate from the caster beams, that doesn't sound very safe.

ABB Hi ABB, The majority of the weight of the planer keeps the castors in place. The only possible stress on the fixings is caused by a very small torsional strain which I consider to be insignificant. Even with just two screws per castor I would not lose any sleep at night. Peter

Peter Parfitt HI Peter, at 9:22, you put screws into the castor beam with the bottom plate (which been put together at 8:54). You didn't show exactly how they were put together, I assume screws are the only means to hold them together?

ABB Hi ABB, The frame is jointed with the Festool Domino. It is glued and the base and frame and then glued and screwed together. It is very very strong. Peter

Hi Matt, KZfaq have stopped private messaging but if you send a comment to a video with an email address it should get captured by the KZfaq spam filter. I will be able to see it but nobody else will. I will send the plans and remove the comment in order to protect your email address. Many thanks for the kind words. Peter

I don't mean to be a naysayer, but the whole machine's weight (150kg or 330 lbs) plus weight of lumber being planed is carried on four oak prongs 150mm long, 40mm, 22.5mm thick. Therefore there is about 40 to 50 kg attempting to split the side rail of each prong. By letting the planer drop at loading from as little as an inch high may well crack the frame. I love wood, but IMHO this is a job for steel. I hope I'm wrong.

Hi Peter, Just want to check how the castors are doing? I'm going to build a similar carriage for my planner thicknesser, which only weighs around 60 Kg. Is this the same castor that you fitted www.firstcastors.co.uk/Bolt_Hole_Braked_Castor_with_Black_Polypropylene_Wheel.asp ? Also, from another video, I recalled that you recommended getting castors which lock both the wheel and the swivel mechanism, but I to my knowledge these castors only lock the wheels. Has this caused any problems. I would appreciated your thoughts, as I need to order 12 castors. Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom, Yes, you have the right castors for the planer platform. For my original platform (shown in the video) I used the smaller 50mm ones. They worked well with my Axminster 106 planer which was well over 100 kgs. When I got the Jet planer I built a new platform, with slightly thicker wood, and used the 75mm castors. The larger castors run better than the smaller ones. You are right, there are brakes for the wheels but the pivot shaft does not lock with this type of castor. This presents no problems at all for a planer carriage. It is only significant if the carriage is going to be subject to a lot of lateral force - as is the case with my mobile bench (when planning by hand etc). But you said that you were getting 12 castors - so what are the other two platforms going to be? If you need the plans just send me your email address by private message and I will send them to you free of charge. Peter

Peter Parfitt Thanks for the advice Peter. The other castors will be used on my table saw and bandsaw. Each are under 80 Kg so I should imagine it will be ok. Having some plans to work off would be great. Will send. I would just like to mention that your videos are very brilliant. Keep up the good work. Cheers Tom.

Nicely done - I’m building one for a Grizzly bandsaw (roughly 180 KG). What was the dimensions of the primary boards that house the Castries? 2x lumber (oak)? How much did you cut away to recess the base? Looks like only about 1” left where wheels mount. Seems like it should be more to handle weight. Would pine be sufficient?

Hi Frank, The detail is in the plans and far easier than me putting every in words. To get plans I need your email address. For my email address go to my channel home page, click on "About" and you will find the email address (this is best done from a PC for some reason). Let me know what plans you need and I will email them to you. Peter
