everybody who's all up in arms about showing people how to build a slingshot has obviously never heard of a zip gun, which you can make out of literal trash and nail gun blanks

It's no different than making a bow out of PVC pipe (and yes, they work!) Or making knives, etc from scrap metal. Or making ghost guns. This is aimed at people who like apocalyptic/survival games.
