To celebrate the launch of my second authored and illustrated picturebook BANDITS (out on 29th Sept and now available for pre-order) I am going to share my long awaited video on EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT MAKING A PICTUREBOOK! In this video I discuss coming up with ideas, pitching your ideas, getting published (and what it's like to work with a publisher), book contracts, getting paid and the entire picturebook process (manuscripts, storyboards, roughs, final art, digital detailing, getting art scanned, editing, colour proofs and getting your advance copies). I hope this answers any questions you have, and makes your own journey to publishing a story easier even if it's just by knowing what to anticipate! People think of starving artists when they have that idea. The sort of artists that only make work for themselves with no commercial application in mind - few creatives are actually like that. Even fine artists try to appeal to curators and collectors. Tell them to look around them - everything they see was touched by a creative! Graphic designers, illustrators, architects, landscapers, letterers, industrial designers, interior designers. People underestimate how much of their lives are touched by the commercial, visual and performing arts.

wow i’m a librarian and i’ve been reading so many children’s picture books while we’re closed (10+ a day lol) (i do not have a child) and i’ve been thinking of writing my own. i haven’t looked up anything about it so i’m so happy this popped on my homepage!!

I love this video! The only thing I would add is that people should never pay for a literary agent! A good literary agent will believe in you enough and in their skill enough that they’ll represent you for free and then they’ll get a cut of the book profits just like you 🥰

Yes! I didn't communicate what I meant well, I meant costs money in the way that they take a percentage! I suppose the idea is that they would get you a better deal than you can get yourself and so they are worth the percentage they take! Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I hope people that were worried about needing to pay for a literary agent upfront see this!!!

@@jhowardsupporter it was a report, just a couple of lines of who inspires us and why so he could get to know us better. And I do think that writing can make you a better artist. If you’re able to describe the world around you through words, you you can then interpret those words through your art. It at least definitely doesn’t make you a worse artist.

I have no experience in making a book but a company did contact me to do a sample book spread illustration for a book idea they're doing. I also work traditionally and painting an entire spread in one sheet would be a recipe for disaster especially because there was a lot of elements in the brief they gave. So I relate so much to painting elements in different sheets of paper. It helped the process go smoothly and definitely relieved the anxiety you get when everything has to go right or else... Basically, painting elements of the book in different sheets is a smart way of doing things when you're working traditionally. :) Thank you for your insight on your book. The art looks amazing!

HEY! I am a children's book author from Germany. I make up stories with my children. We have now published three children's books by selfpublishig. We sell everything through our own online shop. For example our coloring books, mugs or postcards. Of course, our own books too, but you can also order them in a normal bookstore. Your work always motivates and inspires me. We already have Zoom at home and are looking forward to your new book. For everyone who is thinking of writing a book or a children's book. Be brave. Everything is possible and there is always a way. I myself was unemployed and started my own business and now run a small, fine family business called "Mäuse Verlag". Keep up!

Hello hello from Germany! I loved this video so much, thank you for all the insights. I work as a full time children's book illustrator in Germany and in my opinion the hardest part is to get into the industry/building relationships to the people in the industry. To achieve that you have to go to as many bookfairs as you can and be brave and talk to people and get to know each other. In Germany it is not very common for illustrators to have an agent, because the payment isn't the best. I could not afford to keep my agent because of the low payment for children's books. I love making books and it is the only thing I want to do really so I had to go on without my agent but it is going well because I now know many people from the industry. But I think in other countries it is super hard to go without an agent at the beginning, so your advice to get an agent is great!! :) And: I feel like I am burnt out all the time haha... Making books is exhausting, but I love it sooooo much!! Your books look so great!! Thanks for making them!!!

I'm so grateful for this video!! You're one of my biggest inspirations and this video was such a motivation for me ^_^ I just completed my first project of my final year as an illustration student, we were given a week to respond to a brief about our relationship with nature and I ended up underestimating how tiring the process of making a picturebook would be, so I had 5 days to push one out...I barely slept and had numerous breakdowns but the process was extremely eye opening and I'm so happy to be able to say that I did it!! It wasn't to the best of my ability due to the time limit but I wanna say this to anyone reading who would like to work in this field, JUST DO IT! It feels overwhelming at first, especially if you're like me and have to figure everything out by yourself, but whatever the end result is you still learn from it and whatever you take away will just help you with your next attempt :)) good luck!! 💞

Thanks for this! I lost my ability to write stories from disuse, and storybook illustration was something I wished I could do back in the day. I'd love to do it, but I'm not a story writer. Your description of digging a story out of a single complete image is very inspiring, though! I do have pieces that could tell a story and I can't wait to practice with it!

very helpful. i have done 2 bks, & it was so hard. can animate easily stories w graphics & illos or make a full feature-length easy w video. these 2 books were the most difficult & unsuccessful projects ever! i learned a lot from your video here, ty. i can see from what you did & what i did could have been fixed if i tried different processes. & even so in some ugly ass illos i've done. LOVE your art tons. very inspiring in a sea of visual info out there. i think its supurb.

My pleasure!!! I wanted to make a video that Would have helped me wrap my head around the process when I was starting out. I remember scouring the internet trying to find clues but found so little that was presented in a digestible way!!!! Hope this helps!

I'm so happy this video exists.♥️ Thank you for talking about contracts!! I've illustrated a children's book but it definitely wasn't a conventional route. I was fortunately commissioned to illustrate it for someone who isn't an author by trade and then we self published. I feel like some opportunities just come out of no where, although I think it comes down to your connections!

Amazing!!! I've also heard of authors/illustrators self publishing and then catching the eye of a publisher and going on to sign a deal from there! Something I should have said in the video is work on sharing your work in interesting ways - my work and what I do is so visible because of the way I share it online and I'm sure that's how people that can offer me work find me! How did the author you worked with find you?

@@furrylittlepeach Makes total sense! Yeah, I agree, making your work more accessible will lead to more opportunities. I worked with the Author from my previous photo editing job and she knew I illustrated so she asked me! Definitely a one in a million chance given my online presence is low!
