This video shows how I make a compact 2" bore air cannon with a coaxial piston valve. To understand how these valves work examine the third animation in the following link:
www.spudfiles.com/forums/piston-valves-explained-visually-t8157.html
I also go into more detail of how these cannons function in a video I made many years ago, showing how to build a smaller version using these same principles:
kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9Vxhaeq05q7p3k.html
Warning: It is specifically against manufacturer recommendations to use PVC to contain pressurized air. This video is solely for education and entertainment purposes.
The parts used in this cannon are as follows:
(1) 3' length of 3" diameter pressure rated PVC pipe
(1) 3'2" length of 2" diameter pressure rated PVC pipe
(1) 1/2" PVC ball valve (the cannon may benefit from a larger valve, so consider 3/4" or 1" valves and adjust the fittings on the back of the cannon to match)
(1) 1/2" x 2" long threaded PVC pipe nipple
(1) 1 1/2" to 1/2" threaded PVC reducer
(1) 3" to 1 1/2" PVC reducer
(1) 3" PVC coupling
(1) 3" female threaded adapter
(1) 3" male threaded adapter
(1) 3" to 2" PVC flush bushing
(4) 1" long self tapping screws
(1) brass air compressor tank valve
(2) 3" galvanized steel gas vent tee caps (I have not tried it myself, but a hockey puck may also work as a replacement piston according to others)
(1) 3" rubber washer or sheet rubber
(1) 3" tank to bowl rubber gasket
Other supplies and tools needed:
PVC Primer & Cement
Epoxy
Super Glue
TFE Pipe Thread Paste
Coarse and fine Sandpaper
Bench Grinder or Metal Files
Drill & Bits
Bicycle Pump or Air Compressor

This is an awesome cannon. The key items: #1 look inside the 3" pipe and make sure it is smooth. I got a rough piece. #2 The time consuming part will be the piston and its' seat (the end of the 2" barrel). These must be near perfect. The piston pieces need to be as parallel to each other as possible and the barrel must be cut near perfect. Once your piston is done, cut a piece of sandpaper to fit in it. Use a tiny drop of super glue to hold it to the piston, we will remove that later. Use the piston with the sandpaper and lap the end of the barrel. Mark the end of the barrel with a sharpy and start lapping carefully, lifting and looking at the sharpy mark. Once the mark is totally gone, you should be ok. Remove the paper with a little acetone. Now here is the tricky part. If your flat rubber packing is not very flexible, you will need to do the following. I took some 1/16" or near spongy tool drawer lining and cut that fit the piston. I then took some 1/32" flat rubber packing and glued that to the lining. I then glued that to the piston. Now, remember the drawer lining is porous so you must seal around the edge of the lining with super glue to keep the air from migrating under the seal and blowing out the rubber. One last thing. The less surface area on the seal at the end of the barrel, the better the seal will be. I used a regular old bastard metal file around the barrel to reduce the area in about half. Take your time.

The-T-in-buffet ive put 110 psi in a modified propane tank on the back of 3 inch rigid pipe with a brass ball valve to control the whole thing. Lets just say it can hit a camel in the blow hole from about 250 yards. Use steel if you want to go above and beyond. Otherwise, youll have to test air pressure and potato size. Barrel length has very little to do with it. Case and point: airsoft. Barrel length has little to no affect on range or accuracy with a blunt projectile. Its a cannon, not a rifle ;)

I'm having a problem with two parts: 1) grinding off just the lip of the T-Cap evenly 2) after pouring/mixing the epoxy into the 1st T-Cap, I can't get the 2nd T-Cap to sit evenly. Either there's too much epoxy or not enough. Either way, the 2nd T-cap doesn't seem to set even. Do you have any advice?

I used a bench grinder to take off the lip, that worked pretty well. Use more epoxy in the bottom cap and just float the top one on the surface.
@kenvadnais
@kenvadnais 10 жыл бұрын
NightHawkInLight I used a bench ginder. I picked it up for this project after snips/file and hand grinder left me hanging. After you replying to this, I gave it another try and it worked very well. When you put the epoxy in, do you mix it first, then pour it? "use more epoxy", I put enough in where it oozed out between the pistons. I think this is what caused it to be uneven. How full do you fill the 2nd piston? To the top or a little below? Thanks a lot for your help. This is brilliant.
@Nighthawkinlight
@Nighthawkinlight 10 жыл бұрын
kenvadnais If the epoxy oozes out you have enough. The epoxy needs to be well mixed, it doesn't matter if it's mixed before or after it's poured so long as it gets done. Try to support the cap level as the epoxy cures and it should turn out fine.
@kenvadnais
@kenvadnais 10 жыл бұрын
NightHawkInLight Roger that. It's curing now. I'll report tomorrow. Thanks again for your help! I'm using a 4" chamber and 2.5" barrel. It should have a punch. I'm also going to try to use water as a projectile, by loading the compression chamber half-full of water and half of air and filling the barrel with water..Then, apply pressurized water through the fill valve. This should compress the air pocket in the compression chamber and act as a spring when the piston opens. The goal is to get a solid, short stream of water that appears as a clean projectile as it arcs to it's target. :) (I hope) Thanks again for your help.
@Nighthawkinlight

I built this last summer for our mass LARP to shoot foam arrows, and had a lot of trouble creating the piston. Hockey pucks (as suggested in the comments) were too heavy, and as I'm living in Europe where the sizes of pipes etc... is different, I couldn't use the setup in the video. I eventually made it with a pipe-endcap and some rubber, but every 30-40 shots, I have to take apart the gun and fix the piston. For some reason the rubber keeps losening, even with epoxy applied. It's an awesome design, and especially if you're into LARP and want to have something that can be made to look like an old-school cannon, this is amazing! But that piston is a pain in the ass to create :D

Also note, when the piston is made as tight a fit as it should be, it may be difficult to push past the chamber opening because it will want to catch on the lip of the pipe. The sharp lip of the 3" pipe inside of the female adapter may need to be sanded down to allow the piston to slide in.

That is a common issue. It can be resolved by making the piston a tighter fit within the chamber. This will cause the air behind the piston to be released faster than air can leak around from the front of the chamber, creating enough of a pressure differential to slide the piston back and break the seal against the barrel. Opening the ball valve in as quick a motion as possible will also help. The amount that your piston can travel is perfect.

@Nighthawkinlight 10 жыл бұрын
1/2" of piston movement is about right for this barrel size. If you have a lathe there are better options. You can turn a piston and give it an O ring for a perfect seal, and make a one way valve in it that will only allow air to pass when filling the chamber but be closed upon firing. A hole under a rubber flap. Keep the piston light weight by cutting some material out of the center if you're using rod stock so it can accelerate quickly and you're in business. That would be the ideal design.

Hello all! I would like to add to this KZfaq thread that I built one of these Cannon’s and it works flawlessly! I have a machine shop and built the cannon to tight tolerances. I made the piston out of two pieces of 3/8 acrylic, glued them together and fitted the piston by hand sanding the outside to fit the chamber closely to minimize air leaking past. I turned a radius on the end of the barrel where it seals against the rubber pad glued to the piston. With 80/90 psi I get about 275 to 300 feet per second (Checked with a Chronograph). I can interchange 2 barrels, one 1.5 and a 2 inch. The 1.5 is optimum because you can fire golf balls as well. My buddies and I are like little kids playing around with this cannon. To those that want to build one remember that this thing is deadly and can do some serious damage to what ever is in the projectiles path! #Fartapolooza

Don't worry if the threads don't screw in flush. Don't force it too hard or the female fitting may break. Is the rubber face on the piston smooth? I can't imagine enough smooth rubber surface on a bike tire to cover the whole piston. If it's not sealing properly you can apply some TFE thread paste to the rubber and that will make it seal much better.

The only issue you will have in doing so is that you will probably not be able to flip it around backwards into a coupling like i do, so the ridge on the inside that stops the pipe from being fed in through the back side of the reducer will have to be sanded down.

If you want to use it for a bunch of small projectiles like airsoft balls, most hardware or home improvement stores sell these cheap plastic caps that are designed to protect the ends of threaded pipes in transit, by cutting off the flange so it will fit in the barrel you have a perfect container to launch just about anything that will fit in it

Amazon is fine. Otherwise you may find them at hardware stores near the other air compressor fittings.

that piston super-fats opening mechanism is awesome. but i saw one dude made an air rifle, with walve, between the barrel and the tank, whitch was super fast opened with compresed spring, also the spring starts it open it only when it gained speed, so that might be less complicated, but still, very smart method.

WOW nice job. I'm a new subscriber and I am definitely making this gun! Thanks for the link (the first one dose not work). My dad had one when he was a kid and he shot lemons and tomatoes in the Disney Land parking lot.

The cannon does not leak air by design at all. It holds pressure just as long as a sprinkler valve or any other system.

Not from a distance because the pressure disperses shortly after it leaves the barrel, but if you hold your hand over the empty gun (don't try this! always assume the gun is loaded!) the air impact does feel like someone punching you quite hard in the hand.

hey nighthalkinlight, this is my first time building A spud gun and I looked around f I r a while before I thought that your design was the coolest but i have a few questions. While building the cannon i had accidentally attatched the 3" Coupling to the 3" pipe before installing the rubber toilet bumper in between them. I don't think it would have caused an issue with the piston but I'm not sure. Would it? I've just finished building the cannon but while filling the chamber with air, I can feel air leak down the 1" diameter Barrel. I thought the piston wasn't seated properly on the 1" pipe and I've tried to double up the rubber on the piston. After that didn't work I put a cork sheet on top of that but the air still leaks. I've sanded the end of the 1" pipe pipe flat and im wondering if it would be a good idea to cut the 3' 2" barrel down to 3' 1" or 3' or less? I'm also wondering if there is another material I can use to provide an airtight seal or if is there another piston design I could use. Thank you ahead of time and I'm open to any suggestions. I'm really exited to shoo this cannon.

In french its actually pronounced aluminium, and maybie in the uk too i'm not sure, what i'm pretty sure of is that there is no relation whatsoever between the ium at the end of elements and their radioactivity. Glad you make views by sharing your practical knowledge, this is the beauty of youtube to me, good continuation.

What do you mean your male and female adapters are different? Do you mean the bushing? A reducer will work to replace the bushing. You may just have to extend the barrel to make up for the extra distance it will be forward in the reducer.

Everything will melt. What temperature does it need to be good to? CPVC will resist slightly higher temps than PVC, otherwise your only options are metal. Copper, steel, aluminum.

About 50. I've never worn one out, but the piston sometimes needs greasing.

I'm working on a coaxial piston gun inspired by this video. It is lower power, smaller bore, and a simpler design. I need to refine the design, but I think it will work...
