FULL MATERIALS LIST:
Translucent Polymer Clay (I used Premo Accents)
1.5” Oval Pendant Tray
Your Favorite Sculpting Tools
Purple, Brown, Black and Metallic Green Acrylic Paints
Cup of Water
Clear Casting Resin and Necessary Mixing Materials
Fine Tip Round Paint Brush
1/2” Flat Paint Brush
Clay Softener or Baby Oil
Toothbrush
Palette Knife or X-Acto Knife
Other Tips and Notes:
After curing the octopus I had a good amount of air pockets (moonies) in the head. As you could see, none of them were visible after painting so I wasn’t concerned about them.
Adding a good amount of resin to the back of the octopus before placing it on the pendant tray will act as your adhesive. Just be sure that no resin leaks out from behind and goes over the edge of the tray.

Instead of watering down the paint you can mix the colors with glazing medium. It keeps the thick viscosity that makes painting easier but makes the paint translucent. Glazing medium can be a little pricey but one bottle will last a long time and I find it absolutely worth the cost for projects like this.

thanks for all the videos they are amazing!!! the tutorials are well paced and your monsters look fantastic! not for beginner levels tho but really make me get to know what kind of process and techniques im getting into so that i wouldn't be needing or getting lost from tons of beginner sets of tools! have some questions about the clear cast and the glaze part. for example what are the scientific name of these clear cast(since im not located in us)and are there other recommendations for glazing instead of using epoxy resin? and last one what are some of the top colors to purchase to just test things out? (i'm thinking go for some simple horror accessories first like thangs tentacles or alien head😂 thanks a lot:))

7:36 Thinning with water is bad because you are not only lowering the amount of pigment, but lowering the amount of BINDER, also. This means that your subsequent coats MAY wash off the previous coats if you thin it too much. An alternative, would be to thin your paint with an acrylic binder ( paint w/o pigment) so that you get the thinned look without adhesion problems. You don't want to wipe off any of your first coat by applying your 2nd coat. Just an idea but I notice you didn't do a 2nd layer of paint, you flicked tiny droplets and painted eyes so in this case it wouldn't matter. Nice result!!

JUST A SIDE NOTE: Be sure to set the piece on Wax Paper to dry. Or when you go to pick it up it will glue itself to anything it is laying on. With wax paper, it comes up with no problems. Me love this! Will be trying this. I did a glow in the dark octopus in a glass jewelry coin container and added clear resin like it was half in water and half not. I mostly make jewelry with clay via mokume gane/abstract but I so want to dry this for a necklace! I love the wet look. Do you have a FB or some kind of group where people can try your stuff and share with others? Also, can you use liquid clay and a shiney topcoat instead of resin? I so despise having to use resin lol

Jesse Hughes thanks! And yes with polymer clay, you have to bake before painting. Chalk pastels are fine to be added to uncured clay, but don’t glaze the piece until after it has been baked. Hope this helps!
