How To Make A Rocket Stove Bio-Char Reactor

I make a DIY rocket stove into a bio-char reactor. The wood fired rocket stove heat a metal-bucket and mineral wool oven to cook the volatile gases out of the bio-mass (wood chips in this case). The gases are ported into the riser (chimney) of the rocket stove and are re-torted (burned) as fuel. I'll use the bio-char as a soil-building amendment in my garden, which will promote the colonization of microbes in the soil, greatly enhancing its fertility.

Not sure if you are still reading these comments but do have a few for you and if they have been said I didn't see and apologize. 1. Overall nice retort. I like it. 2. Use sand on top of the bucket to help seal the leaks and additional insulation. 3. Put an extension on the chimney after pyrolysis starts to increase the draw and shorten burn time. 4. Put you nifty pot holders on top to cook some beans while you're at it 😜 5. Lastly let it burn and fully cool to limit oxygen contamination PS. Remember charcoal removes everything to make sure you "season" it before you add it to garden or it will suck nutrition rather than give it. Keep up the good work I enjoy the videos 👍

What I've noted when stove started pulling wood gas (mix of Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Hydrogen (H2)) that your rizer is too short to make all that extra fuel burn completely 23:40 (woodgas is rising from rizer without being); Two suggestions: 1) either that wood gas, filter it and use it to run generator, or store it and use it in your vehicles or stoves- you can use charcoal and feed it in rocket stove 2) extend rizer to provide space for burning extra fuel (might need to add extra pipe for air intake into rizer, too) Take care. Thank you for being an inspiration!

Great Video!!! As far as burning the wood gasses off. I know you put the holes in the riser. But how does the gas escape into the riser? Does it come out of the square you cut on the bottom of the can? Also. You didn't speak about the air riser you put on the riser. That might be the answer to my ?'s One more thing. I have a cheaper welder. I was taught to heat up the area with a torch before starting the weld in order to keep a hot pool. I have to turn mine all the way up and run the wire feed slow. I'm really curious though about how your burning off the gasses. How are they escaping? Great Vid. I've been making my charcoal out of gallon paint cans with holes in a 22" Weber bbq. I've only been making paper biochar that I blend up and make briquettes. Thank You!!

This seems to be a lesson in the long way around the hen house.if all you want is char for your garden all you need to do is go buy a bag of 100% hard wood lump charcoal $10-20 a bag. That's about 5x more than what's made in this contraption. That welder alone costs around $1500 +months to learn how to weld properly plus all those other metal working tools. All you need to make biochar cheaply is a bag of lump charcoal, that metal bucket, and an aluminum baseball bat. (Buy it, pulverize it, inoculate it, apply it). And with all that time and money saved ,get a nice seat for the garden and a cold libation for you and sit back and contemplate your next move for your garden

I can’t argue with your logic. I usually just make my biochar in my metal firepit: burn, douse, crush, wet, inoculate. But, I kinda like the long way around the hen house. My channel is about experimentation. I often make videos about doing things the hard way. I make mistakes and learn from them. And try to keep things entertaining along the way. It's a great welder you have but it's time for some practice. Wire speed is too fast, voltage is still too low (not penetrating) and your nozzle is WAY too far from the weld. You CAN grind the bead if needed. The objective of a welder is to bond metal by melting it together not glue it with a separate material pooled on it.

I saw in one of your previous videos you are playing around with aircrete. If, check out a video from Honey Do Carpenter. He made a chimney and insulated the pipe with aircrete instead of mineral wool and had great results. Also, How long did you let it burn? Is there a reason to put it out vs letting the wood chips sit in the bucket until the next day? They would cook all night then.
@GreenShortzDIY
@GreenShortzDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Nick, I think it burned for about 30-40 mins. My thinking for putting it out, was that the wood gas production had stopped. With the outward pressure gone, oxygen can get pulled into the wood chips and I'll end up with white ash instead of bio char. There are usually a few red coals when I dump out the char, that need to be quenched or they'll continue glowing, or reignite.
@TentFever
@TentFever Жыл бұрын
The chamber must be air tight so no oxygen can get to the chips at all. No, No no oxygen or they will begin to smolder when you just want them to gasify to a charcoal that will only burn with oxygen much like lump BBQ charcoal is. Fun fact the lump charcoal makers furnaces run off the gas of the batch of lump charcoal being made.

why did you put the off gas holes at the bottom and not at the top?. im no pro at this but every vid iv seen there always vented at the top and with hot gasses rising it makes sense
@GreenShortzDIY
@GreenShortzDIY 4 жыл бұрын
The idea is to pressurize the chamber. The gas pushes in the lower ports. They need to be lower so the gasses have time to fully burn in the riser. That’s my understanding. I’m not a pro either. Thanks for watching.
@fdgaming
@fdgaming 4 жыл бұрын
@@GreenShortzDIY fair enough . iv never seen that before, but it looked liked it worked so i wont complain, how about a second version of this rather than using a bucket you build it directly into the stove with steel sheets to create a box or a large diameter tube, and have a door on one side so rather than lifting it all off or turning it over you open the side and all the coal falls out, i also dont think the insulation is entirely necessary, i know you need to keep the heat in but i think it just makes it harder to build things like a side door, it would just need to burn for abit longer

I like your video; However I have a few Questions . 1 . Why are you using OIL on your drill Bit ? . Oil is a lubricant . Drill bits cut by friction. Friction causes Heat. Heat is what destroys drill bits . I use ice water. It works better. Bits cut many times more holes before wearing out. It is a whole lot cheaper. AND a LOT less trouble to clean up if you wish to paint the metal later. 2. You are not utilizing the wood gas. What if you drilled a few holes at the bottom of the riser , high enough to let the wood gas out of the retort and into the riser . If it does not work . You can always weld the holes shut . 3. Getting the biochar out of the retort . Us a water bath filter system and shop vacuum. JUST;; Do not use plane water. Use compost tea instead. You cool the biochar and activate it, at the same time. Not trying to be an “A” hole. Just want to help.
@GreenShortzDIY
@GreenShortzDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Raymond. No worries. I appreciate the feedback. I do actually have retort holes in the bottom the riser. You may have only seen part 2 (this video). I use the oil as a heat sink to keep the temperature down on the bit, so it doesn’t re-temper. I need to try ice water. I like your idea for vacuuming the bio char out and the compost tea is a nice riff on that. Thanks for watching.
@ziggy2033
@ziggy2033 Жыл бұрын
Whoa, Raymond drilling is done by cutting, of which friction is a by-product. Water only helps cool the tool, and cutting oils aid in the cutting process. Me beig an old retired tool maker, I like to use bacon grease it works great and smells so much better than hot oils.

Preheating the air would increase the temperature. Perhaps Counterflow Dual Tube would work well. Maybe even use cheap cpu heat sinks.

Make the charcoal producer an add-on tube that is welded/bolted to the side of the chimney perhaps? Insulate all other componets, perhaps add syngas return to the flame section to allow it to be used (that or have a valve to send it to a storage hydrometer)

Good ideas here, Eric. I understand the mechanisms you are talking about. Pretty cool stuff. I’m not sure I’m capable of building something more complicated like that...yet. :-) This project was a big eye opener for me. I hadn’t experimented with gasification yet, but will do more. Thanks for the ideas. Thanks for watching.

Your rocket stove is poorly designed! It does not have enough draft to combust the smoke and achieve optimum heat. You need to add a squirrel cage blower style to your burn pot area and then you will see better results. Or change it to incorporate a 'V' design when the bottom intake controls the air and the 'v' is the wood supply shoot.

I understand what you mean. It’s like calling something a fancy name instead of the simple one. But, think of it this way...the name, in this case, points to how I intend to use it, which is for its biological benefit (soil building) versus firing up the BBQ. I’ll make this promise, when I do use it to cook (I do plan to), I will use its grilling name. :-) Thanks for watching and for sharing your opinion in a respectful way.
