In this new series titled Sustainable Home, we will take you through a series of videos on how to build a sustainable home. At Aanandaa, we are building an innovative and creative home, which is as sustainable as possible. We have explored several construction technologies and designs to ensure we have the most natural, resilient and energy efficient home.
In this video, Manisha takes you through an overview of how to make a Rohtak Dome, its benefits and aesthetics.
The Rohtak Domes team led by Naranyaji is a talented crew that can built vaults, domes and jack arches without any steel or shuttering. The domes are made only with brick and cement, and stay in place because of the angle they are placed at. The roof is quite magical and miraculous in its structure and design.
Sustainable architecture at Aanandaa is directed by Ar. Jitesh Malik from Studio Aureole. The integral design practice at their studio combines a commitment to environmental sensitivity with a contemporary design language and a pedagogical process. At Aananda, Jitesh creatively contextualised a diverse range of sustainable practices to collaboratively work towards an aesthetically enriching experience.

Hello, no the artisans who make these domes only work with cement. The bricks used are ordinary bricks.

Thats a very good mortar ...im personally cursed 😂 my mortar is too too strong i made a 4 cinder block wall to sit a stove edge on once and brushed on a mortor cover with green pigment over a cement floor. 4 years later me and two other guys had to remoe it. Now im a big guy ive removed driveways by myself with a sledgehammer and pickaxe.... But we whacked at these 4 blocks for more than 40 minutes a couple chunks fell out of the brakes but normally the hammer would just make an indentation. At the very end it fell down as a solid thing ripping chunks out of the cement floor and the wall but we were hitting a pass a foot away from each of them. Lol lol. Later I put a small thing around our outside spiral staircase of adobe cement it was so hard when we had to rip up the sidewalk I took out and 6 to 10 ft chunks but that little thing of adobe I let the other contractors dig out and watch the guy beat at a 2-inch thick slab of adobe cement for more than a half hour. About lost it it was only 4 ft by 4 ft... But what happened was that every time he hit it with any of his tools it would simply make a small indentation of the tool😂😂😂😂

These bricks are extremely absorbent along with right mixture of clay and cement.they stick together very quickly. This helps to hold the brick, along with the arc.

Great video. Was missing these. Although the concept itself is sustainable and should last long, since you have used cement instead of lime, it may form cracks over a period of time, just like any other cement structure.

Yeah, but a cement structure can long last atleast 70 years minimum. In Europe you could see WW2 cement bunkers, still those in good structure.

@king000775 Yes, the lifespan of a cement structure is between 15 years and up to 100 years. After 15 years, it may start to form hairline fractures that need to be filled in however the maximum life is 100 years after which it needs to be brought down. You can see these cracks in all the apartment buildings in the city that are more than 15-20 years. However the structures made out of lime last hundreds of year. The examples can be seen in Great Wall of China, all the forts and palaces in India, which all were built using Lime. Plus the bunkers you are talking about is at least 3 to 4 feet thick concrete, and we don't use such heavy concrete when building homes.

In the Great Wall of China, they used in some years rice flour mixed into the lime mix - as we know it took hundreds of years to build. It still stands.

Great concept, but would like to know more how it'll hold up against tensional load and wall compression force without any supporting member! What would be rated Max load capacity above the roof and can it act as load bearing for multi-storey construction?

Feel free to call Narayanji for more information. We know it can take a water tank and a solar water heater on top of it. So load bearing capacity is quite good

Thanks for this informational videos that you are sharing. I am curious how is the electrical connection laid out. Also another question could the top of the dome be made flat for the upper floor's floor?

The electrical pipes run over the brickwork and under the finishing tile layer. Rohtak dome is quite flat and after leveling the roof, another floor can be built

This is simply amazing. I have few questions, Can this roof be useful in hill areas like Kdoaikanal where the average temp is 20 degree c in the day and around 5 degree in the night. There are no fans here. Thanks

This is laid with cement mortar, not lime.

Mam, How can a roof without reinforcement that actually bonds and strengthens the material for load bearing? Also, not sure of it’s strength to withstand earthquake.

Its a shallow dome. Domes dont collapse in an earthquake. The physics is such that it stands till the walls stand

salute for this dome family.gr8 inheritance from their ancestors worth a million. just one question though,how much weight ,load such rohtak dome can withstand? can robbers,thieves will find it difficult breaking inside house tru this dome,just my curiosity?

You can build another room on top of this and even place a water tank। So it can bear a lot of load, and no robbers cannot simply break it to enter!

thanks madam 4 replying.yeah nice to know that these are not just beautiful domes but strong as well. one day ill have these magical domes on my new house god willing.india i believe had many brilliant ancient architecture marvel designs which we lost with time. these domes are just one of them.just these domes make you feel like u are a part of some royal palace.@@farmaanandaa

Hi mam, a question what kind of whether product do you using on this top of the structure? definitely we cannot leave as it is on the Rohtak roof, since red bricks do allow the rain water.

Hi, watwr proofing is done the standard way. After a layer of coement mortar, we applied a water proofing coat, then used brickbats to make the slopes for water drainage and finally put tiles over it grouted with cement

How do one get the electric connection, hook for the fan has been put, wiring?

The pipe for the fan is on top of the roof, and gets embedded in the water proofing and sloping layer.

Would be best to discuss the technicalities with Narayan ji whose details are given in the video. On top of the brick work there is a layer of brickbats for slopes, plaster, waterproofing chemical and reflective tiles.
