This will show you in detail on how to make a Scabbard. Here is the definition of a scabbard "a sheath for the blade of a sword or dagger, typically made of leather or meta"
I am making a medieval damascus sword. This journey is going to be FunTastic for it is my very first sword build! If you like Forging, hammering, fire, knives, swords, laughter, entertainment, and if you breath, then this is the video for you!

I am a full-time Mastersmith knifemaker, and I love my job! I specialize in forged fixed blade knives and also make many other types of beautiful knives.
In March of 2007, I went to the W.F. Moran School of Bladesmithing in Old Washington, Arkansas where I took a two week class on Intro to Bladesmithing under ABS Mastersmiths Bert Gaston and Greg Neely. This is where I learned how to make a blade that would pass the ABS Journeyman Smith Performance Test, after that I took a class on Handles and Guards under ABS Mastersmith Jim Walker where I learned how to make handles out of stag, exotic woods and many other materials.
In June, 2011 I received my Mastersmith Stamp at the Atlanta BLADE Show. Now that I have been granted my MS certification I have a desire to expand my field and continue learning and teaching what I learn, God has given me all the opportunities and teachers that I’ve had and I thank Him for giving me the ability to do something I love.
Follow me on this journey!
Thanks for watching
Enjoy!

Kyle, your skills as a blacksmith are impressive. Great job on the video and thank you for making the sound understandable. Too many KZfaq videos seem to be recorded at the bottom of a trash can. My leather-work instructor defined a sheath as a soft flexible “tube” (leather or fabric) and a scabbard as a rigid reinforced (wood or metal) cover to protect the blade or tool. You put far more effort into the work than an historical professional could have afforded to. Definitely a labour of love. In Europe, historically the leather covering was usually sewn up, wrong side out, as an extended cone, with only one seam, along the back. The leather sheath was then wetted (or soaked), turned right side out, lubricated with hide glue or vegetable gum/glue and slid over the wooden structure to dry in place. A slightly over-sized wooden dummy blade is left in the scabbard until it is thoroughly dry, to insure the desired fit. Leather linings for the scabbard are well known historically but the majority of surviving scabbards are not lined. I have considered lanolin (or petroleum jelly) soaked wool fabric as a protective liner, but have no historical precedent for it. Birch or poplar are good choices for the wooden structure, while oak or other tannic acid woods will damage the blade. Personally, I DO wax and/or oil the interior wood surfaces to protect the blade, but I do not have historical precedent for that either. It just seems a good idea to keep things from swelling in wet weather. Tightbond III or Elmers Wood Glue are the most permanent, but hell if you need to make repairs. In any case your design is more than more difficult than most surviving examples, but the result is much finer and neater. Your workmanship is better than most surviving pieces. Congratulations Kyle on a well documented first class build.

Hi Kyle, This has turned out amazing so far… you must be really pleased. As a hobby luthier I work with wood all the time. Just a few ideas which might save you time and get you better results in the future... 1) Check out the "masking tape and superglue trick"... this is mentioned in elliott113's comment below. Also Crimson Guitars on youtube has a good video on this... it will make temporary attachments really easy with little to no risk of damaging your work. 2) When you were using the grinder on the wood... if you are going to do more of this you should look at getting some "Saburrtooth Flat Sanding and Shaping Discs with Vision Holes" these are designed for woodworking/carving with an angle grinder and they allow you to see the work through the grinding disc while you are working. Also as they are designed for wood they won't burn the wood as easily. 3) I would use wood glue (eg tightbond 3) to join the half's of wood... superglue is not good for two reasons (a) it has a very low shear strength, and (2) it has a very low shock resistance. This means that if the scabbard gets dropped the glue might come apart. At least in this case the leather should still hold it in place. A final thing to think about is controlling squeeze out (of whatever glue you use) when joining the two halves. This may be another reason why the fit changed after the halves were joined. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series!

On the planer, when you get something you need to make thinner than the planer goes, you just take a board like a 2x8 and put it down inside and clamp it on both the inlet and outlet tables of the planer. The board doesn’t have to move with your wood you are planning. I make thin bow limb laminates on mine.

What ive heard for carving out the channel. If you mark your blade with graphite, you can slide the blade along the grove you have going to find the high points. Then you lower the high points until you are satisfied and it fits perfect. The graphite transfers to the wood from friction

personally, I have one of the French hand-cut rasps. They are awesome for shaping. Especially when you can't burn the wood because there is not a cover going on it. So, no grinder. That, and a disc sander to get things flat some. I prefer rasps and files for the final shaping. You may like them, too. Mostly, I don't like using a belt sander when I don't have to. I just don't enjoy it. So, I avoid it.

Hey man, love your videos. I got a question, though. How would I go about making a scabbard for a sword cane? I recently bought one, right? The blade is perfect and beautiful, but the scabbard (the cane part) was made of some…plastic kind of wood, I dunno. Feels cheap. The blade rattles around in there. Ruins the whole thing. I’ve thought about using an old table leg and cutting it in half, and doing what you did in this video, but I’m not sure. If you could give me some advice, I’d dig it.

Milling machine - that is the best way to get a scabbard core roughed out. Then, make yourself a couple of saya chisels, and finish with them (curved body with a flat chisel blade so your fingers don't hit the scabbard).

Instead of leather why not use felt. Leather can hold moisture over time and can cause the blade to rust. Thoughts??

I saw you use blue masking tape to hold the scabbard together. I used to work as a designer at a shop where we did custom engravings on leather. My boss always told me that blue tape could damage the leather. Don't know if it was actually true. But I didn't want to test it out.

obviously you got to the end result, but did you possibly think about using a router to cut out the middle? I have just seen other people do that.

For interest's sake, what would be a ballpark retail cost for such a scabbard? Considering the amount of labour that went into it, it wouldn't come cheaply.

It could be forbidden but the milling machine could've given you a better carving inside the scabbard wood.

About the super glue. Watch Crimson guitar on KZfaq. He is using the “masking tape super glue trick“. Put masing tape on your wood and superglue the tape together. Masking tape is not as stickinas super glue and gets loose easier.

I would probably use a cross stitch for the edge of the leather rather than a butt stitch. Will hold the seam down better.

@@KyleRoyerKnives Its hard to say I literally bought my router for hidden tang and threw tang blades as a time saver and doing it freehand is kinda tricky but fun...using a router table, on the other hand, may remove some of the fun.

Historically, leather (especially dyed leather) was not used inside the scabbard. There have been examples of sheepskin (raw, with the oils still in the hair) and linen. I know there are some concerns about the tanning solutions or dyes being corrosive to the blade if it is stored in the scabbard for any length of time. Also, should you get caught out in the rain and that inside leather get wet, I would imagine a nightmare to get it dried. Also, traditionally, there would have been a single-piece covering stitched up the back. That would have saved you a ton of time stitching.

@@KyleRoyerKnives Leather is definitely a BAD idea for the interior of a scabbard. Leather holds moisture (even in just a humid environment) and will rust the hell outta your sword. Best is wool fabric. It will pick up oil from the surface of an oil sword and serve to protect later.
